Tom Sawyer was pretty heavy. I mean Metallica and Megadeth would be proud of Alex riffs on that.

By Tor

Beneath Between Behind was real metal riffing

In the End was a big metal power ballad

Bastille Day

Anthem

Passage To Bankok was pretty dark Sabbath type riffs

If you are talking about dark metal then Cygnus was pretty dark. I mean a lot of chord progressions to inspire thrash chords.

I mean "Atomised through the core until the astral door". Man!!! these were great unusual dissonant chord sequences by Alex!!!! So many nods to Sabbath there

so I don't necessarily think that "Heavy" should have to mean utterly distorted

Steve

In The End was a great power ballad

Something for Nothing live.

If Different Stages disc 3, then like a million likes.

That version rocks, but I was listening to ATWAS.

ATWAS is wrong sorry. Alex uses a Les Paul and Marshalls to get incredible power. It just loses all of the subtlety of the first 4 albums

Alex used his 335 and Fender Amps in the Studio for FBN, COS, and 2112. But for ATWAS he needed a lot more power so went for a rack of Marshalls with a LesPaul

Lost the subtlety and the tone of the studio albums IMHO

After a few years of neglect i seem to be listening to nothing but HYF these days. What a beautifully put together album. Powerful yet relaxing, uplifting yet quite dark. Classy piece of work

If had to name a short-list for fav Rush album, HYF would defo be on it

I don't think any Rush songs are "Heavy Metal" they are all better than that.

"Heavy Metal" is just a label that was invented by the music press in the mid 70's to try to catagorise leather and chains and Harley Davisons etc. and macho posturing

The best examples I could give of the misogyny associated with "Heavy Metal" would be Rob Halford and David Lee Roth who epitomised the macho approach but then but came out as gay. That is great, happy that they did but it blows the silly genre apart. :finbar: :finbar:
