I watched it last night. Kinda' meh, imo.

How big of a Star Wars fan are you?

Not much of one. I adored the original release, but never caught the fever that so many of my generation did.

Wait, you're one of the weird people who likes the original more than Empire Strikes Back?

I can see why a non-Star Wars fan would look at this and say "meh". It's only an ok war movie...the biggest value to me, anyway, is that it provides a different take on Star Wars and greatly expands our glimpse into this galaxy far, far away.

Just got back from seeing it.

OUTSTANDING. Wanna see it again!

Heavy drama, intensity, and the dreaded feeling that you knew what was going to happen at the end. Felicity Jones was most excellent as Jyn. Excellent performances by everyone else, but Forest Whitaker really shined as Saw Gerrera. Donnie Yen also stood out as Chirrut.

I could see the last scene coming for several minutes, but it didn't detract from the film. After all, it's a Star Wars film. There's always something that you want to see done differently.

I would have laid on the ground and pretended to be dead.

But he would sense your life force, right?

I don't know. It would be worth a try.

Light sabers are pretty cool. Do they ever run out of power?

Just saw it for a third time and man am I impressed!! Anyway, got a question that could be a spoiler so,,,, spoiler alert!!!

Spoiler question:

When the stormtroopers are ambushed in the desert city and their was a great (IMO) battle in the city, did it remind any of you of Black Hawk Down?? For some reason I kept thinking that it was a Star Wars version of Black Hawk Down. I very much enjoyed both the fight in this movie and that movie - just wondered if any of you had the same reaction.

What a movie!!

It very well could have been. I read/saw where Episode VII paid homage to scenes from other great movies.

I've always thought that Episode IV was inspired heavily by WW2 genre movies. The Empire is very much like Nazis, with their uniforms, shape of their helmets, even to the point of using the term "stormtrooper". And the escape of the Millenium Falcon from the Deathstar was like an air attack on a B-17 from ME 109s.

So apparently Vader's scene at the end was a late decision reshooting schedule scene not originally planned. Oh my, that scene alone earns the film a whole extra star.

I thought that too.

Yeah. While a fun scene, it comes across as a post script to everything else. A second-thought, fun way to segue into Episode IV.

It was a smart move. If Vader had made a mere "cameo appearance" in the film, where he didn't do anything notable, fans would have been really disappointed.

Black Hawk Down is one of my favorite movies. I didn't have that thought watching Rogue One but I can definitely see why you did. I loved all of the battles in R1. It was the most gritty of any of the Star Wars movies.

Definitely agree with you about the grittyness. I think that was a big part of why I liked the movie so much. A lot of folks in my office made the same exact comment.

Great point about WW2. Totally agree. The escape from the Death Star was always my favorite part of the movie and yes, I had the exact reaction / feeling you speak of concerning a B-17 & ME 109's. Loved Han & Luke up in those turrets.

Hyperbolically speaking the first half was Phantom Menace bad, the second half New Hope good. And the loudness of the score was annoying as hell. The makers have never heard of 'silence speaking volumes?' I also find it insufferable how some Star Wars fanboys and girls gloat on about how many times they see these movies. There's lots of comparably good movies that get released that get little support yet these people go on and on about how many times they've (presumably) paid to see the SAME movie over and over. I just don't get this type of unnecessary loyalty.
