I'm now looking at their careers from the late 60's to 1998. The problem with Jack is he's ALWAYS "Jack" no matter what part he's playing, he's good at being Jack though and he's got a lot of great performances. For 20 years though 1976-1996 De Niro had sewn up a legendary career with no real missteps and had an untouchable aura around him, so I give to De Niro.

I went with Bobbie. Is funny because jack has gotten better over the years where bob has become inconsistent.

It all comes down to the writing. You can't make a good movie with bad writing or a bad script.

De Niro for one thing doesn't work with Scorsese anymore and it seems like he's lost the ability to turn anything down. It's almost like he's determined to accept whatever scripts land on his desk.

OK, let's see. Best performances for each (plus a highlighted top five personal favs)

I'll start with the best of Nicholson (performance-wise)...

Easy Rider

Five Easy Pieces

The Last Detail

Chinatown

Cuckoo's Nest

Goin' South

Shining

Terms of Endearment

Prizzi's Honor

Broadcast News

Batman

Two Jakes

A Few Good Men

Hoffa

Wolf

Mars Attacks!

As Good As It Gets

And now DeNiro...

Bang the Drum Slowly

Godfather II

Taxi Driver

Deer Hunter

Raging Bull

King of Comedy

Brazil

Untouchables

Midnight Run

Goodfellas

Awakenings

Cape Fear

Casino

Cop Land

Wag the Dog

Ronin

Meet the Parents

Plenty of memorable roles in both groups, but the nod goes to Nicholson, for a career of fewer phoned-in performances.

He's not even acting anymore, just being DeNiro.

But you can turn down a role in one. At least Jack can.

This.

I've never seen Jack venture out. He's great at what he does, but he's always Jack.

You want to see someone venturing out? Watch De Niro in Star Dust.

I can't see Jack pulling this off.

It's clear to me that Raging Bull and The Deer Hunter as two more of De Niro's memorable performances. Plus you could also say his cameo in The Untouchables and his turn as Max Cady in the Cape Fear remake are as well.

Looking over each actor's filmography I reached the personal conclusion that Nicholson portrayed more sympathetic characters.

So your criteria for whether someone is a good actor or not is whether they play bad guys or good guys? :16ton:

No. DeNiro played more caricature. I simply felt more empathy for Nicholson characters.

There's plenty of caricature in Jack's work, for example: his Jack Torrance, his Billy Buddusky, his Randle McMurphy, his Henry Lloyd Moon, his Frank Chambers, his Jimmy Hoffa, his Garrett Breedlove, his Will Randle, his Warren R. Schmidt and especially his Darryl Van Horn, his Joker and his Colonel Jessup.

I guess caricature is the wrong word. I think Nicholson played characters I find more sympathetic.

You find Jack, in his work, is a warmer personality?

Does sympathetic imply a warmer personality?

No to me sympathetic, when talking about film characters, implies being benign.
