Keyboard / Synth Thread

So, now that I'm back visiting the forum somewhat regularly....

What's the typical Rush head using for synths today? Are you an analog kid or a digital man?

What do you use to get that intro Tom Sawyer dive sound? Are you a dedicated keyboard player playing Rush, or are you a guitarist or bass player that plays keys on the side?

Just checking to see if there are enough here to get some good keyboard conversation going.

Hello All:

Thought I'd chime-in and keep this thread going...

Been visiting the Rush Forum for about a year now, and became a member this past Sunday...

For those who are interested, I'm a Columbus-based rock musician/singer who also plays electric/acoustic guitar as well as keys, synth, and pedal board.

I guess you could call me a (Rush fanatic) 'digital man' as I do not own any analog gear, mostly solid-state amps along with a digital synth.

My keyboard rig consists of a Roland Fantom-X6, PK-5A, and KC-110. I also run an SM-58 into the keyboard amp for live vocals (with a touch of reverb). Currently, I have about 25 patches dedicated to Rush sounds alone, mostly from the Moving Pictures and Signals albums; I also have an assortment of samples from Permanent Waves, Power Windows and Hold Your Fire, which I trigger using the pedal board while I sing and play guitar. In addition, I have a few songs programmed into the sequencer, including Subdivisions, Countdown, and Manhattan Project. All told, there are about 15 songs in my Rush repertoire, the most recent being "Caravan". Being a mostly 80's Rush fan, I would like to add a song from Grace Under Pressure sometime down the road...

Anyway, I really enjoy reading these threads and appreciate the treasure trove of insights that other musicians have to offer. My enthusiasm for (Rush) music continues to be propelled forward by all of this stuff and hopefully I can bring something to the metaphoric table...

By the way, concerning Tom Sawyer, if anyone has a good sample (WAVE file) of the sweeping Oberheim effect that occurs at the very beginning, as well as mid-way thru the song, I would be interested in hearing it and, should that person be interested in hearing any of my Rush samples, feel free to shoot an email my way at laser991@hotmail.com.

are you looking for samples or patches?

I have a good TS res for OP-X and also one for an oberheim OB-8.

I could record them if you are looking for samples.

Hello there,

Yes-I am looking for a good sample (in wave file format) of the sweeping Oberheim (OB-X) effect that occurs at the very beginning of Tom Sawyer. It also can be heard throughout the rest of the song. I'm pretty sure the effect is the same throughout the entire song, so I would just need a single sample of that particular sound event to import into my Fantom-X6. Also, if there are any Rush samples that you are looking for, I have sampled a lot of stuff from the Moving Pictures album, including Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta,The Camera Eye, and Witch Hunt.

did they change sound cloud to not allow downloads?

https://soundcloud.c...s-growl-samples here are some from OP-X I can do the patch in my oberheim tomorrow.

Send me your email address and I can send you all the files zipped up.

Sweet...those TS-growl samples are the real deal.

You can send a zip file to: laser991@hotmail.com.

Thanks!

two emails sent

exported at 48.0 16 bit

Ill try to do the one form my OB-8 tomorrow

Got 'em.

The OB-8 sounds awesome-very authentic-sounding Rush circa 1981.

If there are any Rush samples of mine that you would like to hear,

let me know and I'll send some waves your way...

Thanks again,

I think I am pretty set up for everything from farewell to kings to signals between the minimoog,op-x and ob-8.

If anyone has any patches for grace under pressure for any PPG VSTs that would be great....

I've got pretty much everything from Red Sector A sampled, from the thumping bass synth to the polyphonic synth using a JP-8 patch.

Perhaps you could import my samples into your soft synth and go from there...

:rush: I would be happy to share the patch itself, but according to Roland Corporation, there is no universal standard for transferring patch data from the Fantom-X to another manufacture's device (such as a PPG virtual studio) in wave file format. So samples are the only option that I'm aware of...

Hey everyone. So, random question. Can someone give me some sort of authentic list of synths Geddy used on different albums? I know there are plenty out there, but I'm not to keen on trusting Wikis. Plus, you guys know what you're talking about

ATTN: Synth Players/Programmers

Does anyone have any good synthesizer samples from Power Windows?

In particular, the elaborate section of The Big Money leading into verse one?

Also, anything from Grand Designs, Manhattan Project, and Middletown Dreams.

Thanks in advance.

Hi

I'm new to this Forum but it was brought to my attention whilst I was searching for places where I might be able to source some sound samples for our Rush tribute band.

We do not have a keyboard player so we are pre-recording synth sounds which we trigger play back onstage through a bluetooth pedal board. We can record most things but we are looking for some special effects that we cannot otherwsie replicate and specifically we were looking for a sample of the opening synth effect right at the beginning of Presto. when I googled the search words it pointed me to this Forum. I then saw a thread going back to 2010 in which some Members were posting to each other about sample WAV files and the beginning of Presto was one of those files that was in the topic of the conversation.

Can anyone help me to locate a sample for that please?

Thanks

Pratt

I was able to create a six-second sample using wave pad. It starts just after the drum beat and ends just before the acoustic guitar so it would be possible to incorporate into a live performance setting if you timed everything just right. I'm not sure what you are using to playback samples, but if you would like, I can send you a wave file to import into your own sampler. Midi-map it to your pedal board and then trigger it live.

Many thanks RR, that could do it. We are new to playing back samples. We recently bought a pedal board called a Blueboard by IK multimedia. We record backing tracks in garageband, which are mp3 files and then play them back through the blueboard. It is working a treat. Im not sure if WAV is a midi file though or similar to a mp3 type file but yes please could you send it to us? Do you do this by sending me a PM or something?

Thank you so much!

I can email you an Mp3 of the sample if you would like. Simply import it into garageband and then trigger with the Blueboard just as you would with your backing tracks.

Hey, so I'm completely new to all of this stuff...

Just recently purchased a PK-5A and I have it connected via midi to my ultranova Synthesizer and am able to play a full octave of notes which is awesome, however I want to do more!

What software and hardware do I need to be able to have my PK-5A trigger samples and other sounds?

Thanks for the help in advance!

Hello there:

So if your PK-5A is set to "MONO" or "POLY" mode, and both it and your synth are set to MIDI channel 1 (for instance) in order to play a live sound patch as you mentioned, then you would first need to switch the pedal-board to "DRUMS" mode and then set the PK-5A and your synth to MIDI channel 10 (for instance) in order to trigger samples from the board. If your synth is set-up anything like mine, you are able to assign samples to a rhythm kit or pad bank, which operates on a separate MIDI channel from your live sound patch. No special software or hardware is required if you have an on-board sampler and drum/rhythm kits to assign samples to. Please see pages 9-10 of your PK-5A owner's manual for more information on how to do this.

Looks like this thread has been silent a while, eh?

In an attempt to wake it up for a minute, for those who don't follow the synth world very closely, there's been a fair bit of action regarding remakes of classic synths in recent times. One of the cooler ones, IMO, is the Behringer Poly D that is supposed to be available in early 2020. They basically took their Model D module that's been out for a couple of years now and blew it up into a full-sized keyboard with several extra features not found on the original Minimoog or the Moog reissue. I'd be tempted to snag one if I didn't already have the module. For most practical purposes, it's more or less a Minimoog+ at less than 1/5th what it now costs to get hold of the original or a reissue.

(Sorry for not embedding, but I can't get that to work right now - wondering if perhaps some posting privileges are limited until one reaches a minimum post count, which I know is standard on many forums.)

Anyone else using any of the new Behringer synths? I've been getting good results from the D, Neutron and Odyssey. Looking forward to the eventual release of the UB-Xa (their Oberheim OB-Xa remake), though there's no timetable on when that will be completed right now.

Hi folks. I'm looking to get into playing keyboards, both with hands and also hopefully using a foot controller while playing bass guitar. Can anyone advise me on a good keyboard to get started with please. Ideally one with some decent sounds that doesn't cost a fortune. I was considering a McMillen 12 Step for a controller - are these good for live?

Also, is it better to get a keyboard with weighted keys or not?

Sorry, total keyboard/synth n00b here. Any advice would be gratefully received!

Thanks :)

What kind of music are you going to play with it? If it's entirely for Rush, then the Behringer model D mentioned above is a great inexpensive synth to learn on (and it supposedly sounds pretty much identical to a real Minimoog, which is what Geddy used for leads and sounds up until P/G or so). It doesn't have a keyboard though, so you'd have to pick up a MIDI keyboard as well. For synths you typically want unweighted keys - weighted keys are mostly for simulated piano action.

I haven't seen any inexpensive MIDI foot pedals, but I would expect them to exist out there somewhere. You could run those into the Model D too, or use something like a Moog MiniTaur (which recreates the sound of the Taurus pedals that Geddy and Alex used).

If you're after a more generally useful setup, then there are a million options depending on what you want (piano, electric piano, synth, organ, samples, etc).
