  1. 1. Which is better? Or which do you like more?

Really tough call. These are two of my all time top 3 albums. Hemispheres gets a slight edge, just because to me, the boys' musical chops were probably at their peak on this record - title track and La Villa the obvious examples.

I prefer the tone of PWaves. That's the difference maker for me.

Side 1 of Waves > Side 1 Hemi

Side 2 of Hemi > Side 2 of Waves

Permanent Waves is eveything I'm looking for in a Rush album. It has my top 2 favorite songs and one of the weaker songs (Jacob's Ladder) just elevated a ton from the live treatment on the R40 tour.

So PeW is my easy #1, Hemispheres is in my top 4.

The repetitiveness of Jacobs Ladder makes it my favorite day dream song of all time, but Hemispheres is my favorite Rush album

I like more on Permanent Waves than I do on Hemispheres. I think the only song I really love on Hemispheres is "La Villa Strangiato". And even though "La Villa Strangiato" is one of my all-time favorite Rush songs, I'm still going with Permanent Waves. I like Permanent Waves as a whole more than Hemispheres.

I absolutely love Permanent Waves but I just think Hemispheres is better because of the awesome musicianship and the incredible wonderful sound that Alex creates. As a guitar player I just think that Alex finally achieved what he had set out to do in the beginning on that album. He wanted to create a bigger sound than all of those great prog rock bands like Genesis without Rush needing keyboards and he achieved that. Yes I know that Steve Howe and Steve Hackett are brilliant players but take away Rick Wakeman and Tony Banks from the equation and those bands would have sounded very very sparse. Alex laid down the gauntlet to say " I am the daddy and have the greatest all encompassing guitar sound ever" End of !! That massive chord at the start, the F sharp 7 sus 4 through that wound up Hiwatt and the Roland Space Echo with Chorus still sends shivers down my spine as a guitar player. It is awesome !!!

I am sorry I just think this a pointless comparison. It is a bit like saying "who was better, Lennon or McCartney?, Jimmy Page or Eric Clapton?, Eddie Van Halen or Steve Vai? John Bonham or Keith Moon?"

Hemispheres was perhaps when Rush got to their peak as musicians, Alex guitar work and sound reached its peak. But apart from "The Trees" on Hemispheres the songs on Permanent Waves were better. Just my opinion and I would never claim to be right.

I think "The Trees" and "Red Barchetta" are Rush greatest songs (as songs). As a guitar player of 40 years I have never ever heard any finer guitar work in respect of sound, feel, dynamics, and complex melodic interpretation. Those 2 tracks are Alex masterpieces in my humble opinion.

What you have to remember is that Rush went into the Progressive Rock genre as a power trio without a keyboard player (I know Geddy is very accomplished on synths now), so Alex had to fill out the sound so much. Steve Howe and Steve Hackett were brilliant players but they could not have done what Alex achieved, end of

Oh and I forgot to mention Francis Dunnery from IT Bites. A wonderful guitar player and frontman.

IB are one of my favourite ever bands but Frank relied heavily on the backing from Jon Beck's brilliant keyboard playing.

In fairness to Frank he had to handle the lead vocals as well but his guitar sound would not have held up without the keyboards.

A question to the musicians here: which of the two albums do you think it took more talent to write?

Also very difficult: they're like two wrestlers of equal height, weight, musculature, and skill, one with just a slightly grimmer exp<b></b>ression.

And that, I promise, is the last stupid analogy and excuse for not answering a question.

How about this stupid analogy?

Lorraine said to you Johnny which took more talent to write? If I am honest I would say probably PW because they were so accomplished technically by then that Hemispheres would come quite easy as brilliant musicians at the top of their game. However I still say "The Trees" is one of the greatest songs they have EVER written and performed. As a guitar player I say the guitar work is just incredible. When I was a kid I learned every Rush song up to Moving Pictures, I have forgotten most now but I can still play the intro on my classical at will, it will never leave me. Finger pick style D major, F sharp major, C minor, A major played on the 5th fret, E major, G major, A major on the 2nd fret, B minor taking the minor 3rd from the second string and hammering back on to get the "trill"

Laughable. Permanent Waves is much better.

This post is actually quite laughable.

Considering you should do your homework before you post. LOL

The boys blew their wad with "Hemispheres" which was their apex as a band. The greatest album ever made by humans.

Then they were lost and had to take a break and figure shit out. Hence the more corporate commercial "Permanent Waves."

Come on man. Really?

"Laughable?"

You must love One Direction and Katy Perry too.

I'm not sure this can actually be answered given that it's the same band writing two albums within 15 months of each other. Just because PeW came after Hemispheres doesn't mean it took MORE talent to write just because the band was more experienced then.

And since it's probably impossible to answer, I'm going back to the superhero analogy because...what the hell ;)

They're both not of this earth.

One's magical, fierce, and of the gods.

One's optimistic and the ideal.

Which took more talent to write?

- Who knows? You need only trust your feelings.

Very difficult choice. They're both incredibly good, in that way that only Rush of that era could possibly be.

I chose Hemispheres in the poll because although I suspect that Permanent Waves might actually be better, Hemispheres means more to me.

I prefer both to Moving Pictures.

Hey, Earl, look up the word "opinion" in the dictionary. Keep in mind that differing viewpoints are what make the world interesting. I laughed at this poll because it was such an easy choice for me. I love Permanent Waves. I like Hemispheres, too, but it's ruined by that god-awful title track (again, opinion). You can try to tell me why I'm wrong till the cows come home, but I will not be swayed.

And by the way, I do think that 1D and Katy Perry are trash. Haven't I mentioned that somewhere?
