Robin Hobb- The Assassin's Apprentice

I have tried reading this before, but always got distracted. But this time I am going to stick it out. She writes as well as Tad Williams. That is the highest praise I can muster for any author.

The Girl Who Escaped ISIS: This is my Story by Farida Khalaf & Andrea Hoffmann.

Ms. Khalaf was a 19 year old Yazidi girl when ISIS swept down on her home town, killed her father and most of the men in the town and sold her and the other women into slavery. The book sets this up, goes over her time as a slave, her eventual escape and her subsequent immigration to Germany where she has been resettled.

Ms. Hoffman, who met her in a refuge camp in Iraq, helped her put her story into words and get the book published. Even the story that was finally published was obviously greatly sanitized (for lack of a better phrase) as Ms. Hoffman notes that while she slowly listened to Ms. Khalaf tell her story she began to have nightmares due to the story's impact on her.

Its a reasonably short book but written very directly & clearly. A very gripping read which also gave me a better understanding of who the Yazidi are and why ISIS might have hated them so much.

Highly recomend it.

Robin Hobb- The Royal Assassin (The Farseer Trilogy book two)

I was absolutely enthralled with the first book of this trilogy. So far, I feel the same way about book two!

Forgot what I last posted. I'm somewhat close to finishing part 2 of the Eisenhower biography by Stephen Ambrose. Very well done biography, I like Ike. I plan on re-reading Robert Dallek's JFK biography because I missed a lot of info from it the first time. I could use a review of Kennedy and his term as well.

Marvel's Avengers Encyclopedia, with the Lad. Johnny Blaze would be proud.

Does it cover the comics and telly shows and whatnot? I could imagine that being quite a beautiful book!

Just the comic books...and yes, the art is incredible.

I want to pick this up next year, along with the Dark Avengers Omnibus and The Secret Invasion. I'm way behind (that's an understatement, lol), but this stuff seriously intrigues me.

Fraroc Level Confession...

I have never read The Fountainhead or Atlas Shrugged they both arrived today from Amazon. I will rectify this...

I liked The Fountainhead but couldn't get into Atlas Shrugged. I soldiered through about 65% and had to bail. Hope you like them.

Just finished Walden - Thoreau. I am currently reading some E.A. Poe and then onto something lighter. Not sure what yet. My son gave me the Game of Thrones series for Christmas so maybe that.

Loved The Fountainhead.

Thought "Walden" was an absolute bore.

Agree on both counts. Full disclosure: I bailed on the last couple chapters of Walden.

Not even close to a fraroc level confession. I've read both and found them interesting but there's something so silly about all the main characters going into 10-20 minute speeches when they hear a random comment/question
