Top three are pretty much a lock but otherwise the order changes. In fact it'll probably change as soon ask hit 'post' lol

I love Alex the person, the musician, and the member of Rush .. I love his guitar up thru Moving Pictures .. The Necromancer, Xanadu, Cygnus, the entire debut, etc - all fantastic pieces of guitar ..

But he's not Top 3 for me

He spit the bit with that solo album, and there are other guys who have shown a little more reverence for being forever linked to the guitar ... That's no shame to Alex, just that his priorities were/are different ..

I love the guy though, so it is hard to say anything disparaging about him

He has sausage fingers, bad hair and an unnatural obsession with soup.

Yes, my enjoyment of his guitar playing is a major reason why I'm obsessed with this band. Now I don't play an instrument persé but as an accomplished air guitarist I'm qualified to state Alex Lifeson is a top three quality guitar player.

3.... I have to rate Frank Marino over Alex.

Although I like Rush more than Mahogany Rush, as a generalization I like Frank Marino's style and tone more than Alex's.

He spit the bit with that solo album...

Please elaborate. I have yet to listen to Victor...I think anyway.

Give it a listen JR ... Some love it, some hate it, and he definitely went out on a limb at times ... But the guitar geek in me was sorely disappointed with the lack of focus on the guitar itself ..

He did what he wanted to do, so good for him .... But at that point in his life, it was obvious that creating a guitar album was not important ..

oh well

I just finished listening to By Tor from ATWAS. The solos Alex plays in that song (especially live) are insane... the way he uses his volume pedal to create those moods is really something, especially for someone who was only 23 years old at the time. So, your goddam right, Alex is in my top three and he is at the TOP of that list. Behind him are John Petrucci and Steve Hackett. Or, Steve Hackett and John Petrucci... Edited by Thunder Bay Rush

Gilmour, Van Halen, Young and Lifeson. Four guitarists whose work I enjoy across their bodies of work.

Add Knopfler to that list.

So I guess I'm unsure about a top three, but Alex is in the Pantheon, for sure.
