Travel Thread

I thought it would be fun to start a travel thread - to see and hear about where folks in TRF are going, or would like to visit.

And to perhaps share some travel advice with others.

Anything travel related!

I have tickets to Thailand at Christmas. 2 weeks there, and then 2 weeks in Cambodia. Escaping Canadian winter for a whole month. Yay!

I'm so excited, I started a thread.

So, where are you heading, or thinking about going?

I'd be excited too if I were visiting Thailand and Cambodia again.

vt, I know you've already visited both places before so what are your plans this time?

How much happy pizza are you planning on consuming in Cambodia?

Have you ever been to Cabbages and Condoms in Bangkok?

Checking out Muay Thai?

There are so many thoughts and feelings that swim through me when someone starts enthusiastically talking about travel. It's on par with me being in Midtown Comics in Manhattan.

JB! Your excitement makes me even more excited!

I love traveling, especially in Southeast Asia. The cultures, the food, the music, the intestinal distress...

Thailand is so huge and diverse, that it would be easy to visit it several times over. This time, after a few days in Bangkok (hopefully to hear some live molam music), we're heading Northeast to check out Isaan food and culture, spending a couple nights in Ayutthaya on the way to see the temples, and then south (Trang) for more delicious food, and to check out the Malay influence on the region, and then Ko Lanta for sand, sea, and reeeelaxing! :sundog:

No Patpong pingpong.

Dunno what I'll do in Cambodia. I absolutely loved Phnom Penh last time, and could easily (and happily) hang out there!

Any recommendations? Angkor was amazing, so seeing some other historical sites is on my list.

re: Happy Pizza. My first trip there, I tried a Happy Herb's "special" and it did absolutely nothing for/to me. Tried a second one in Siem Reap, and the same result. I found this other place just off the main drag in PP and ordered a happy pizza and a happy shake. "Please make me happy" I begged.

Made it back to the hotel and spent a blissful afternoon writing in my travel journal, looking at the neighbourhood, and lying down on the softest bed in the world.

Last time, I asked for a happy pizza to go without the pizza.

Patpong ping pong. I thought you could only do that on HBO documentaries of Bangkok travel. But yeah, after visiting I realized it's legit.

As for other Bangkok stuff, if you haven't yet, I'd say to check out Muay Thai since I assume you've seen all the wats, the palace, and markets.

As far as Cambodia goes, I've only been once and spent a little less than a week spread over Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. It wasn't enough as you know. Angkor Wat is still probably the most interesting thing I've seen in Asia. Favorite spot in Angkor Wat: Ta Prohm. Without a doubt, I'd guess you've been to The Killing Fields and S-21. I'd go again if I ever hit Cambodia again. In fact, I think we've discussed this before.

I don't think I'm telling you anything new here. I'll say this though about the happy pizza: when the happiness was IN the pizza sauce and under the cheese and toppings, it was stronger. When it was sprinkled on top, it was noticeably weaker. I'm not sure why that'd be but I had that happy pizza nearly every day ((in addition to the usual partaking)) and found it to be the case. And yeah, I told the waitress ((at the place that had the good stuff)) something similar to what you said...I said, "I'd like to be really happy please." She replied by smiling and saying, "Ok. Happy." I added, "Yes, really happy. Thank you." :blaze: I was :blaze:

Only one week until the chain of flights begin!

22+ hours in the air, around 30 hours travel from door to door...weather etc permitting. Exciting!

No other travelers this holiday season?

VT, are you really going there?

Does that mean you won't be here for a month?

If so, whatever are we going to do without you?

Yes Ma'am, it is a truism!

And while I certainly won't be on here as much, I'll be kicking around from time to time, although that'll mostly be in Cambodia, and my posts won't be as legible. :D

That's a really nice thing to say Lorriane, and I'm quite touched by that - but I'm just a newbie! (But one prone to go on the odd posting tear. Like today!)

You guys will be fine, although the poor tedzzz thread might suffer. :(

If I knew how to post my own pics, I'd send out the odd "postcard" on this thread.

But to do that, I'd probably have to join some damn site, and I hate damn sites (this damn site not included).

Just join photobucket and get it over with. For me it's been much more beneficial than heachache.

It'd be cool to see some shots of Angkor Wat, Phnom Penh, and wherever else you may wander

You must have some pretty decent flights if it's only 30 hours door to door from Canada (right? Whereabouts exactly?) to Cambodia.

Where are your stopovers?

No upcoming travel plans, but in the past (seems like another life now) I have been to pretty much every corner of the globe.

What are a few of the places that you've really enjoyed or perhaps didn't enjoy so much?

Recommendations?

Where are your stopovers?

VT's Passage to Bangkok:

Flying Ottawa - Toronto - Seoul - Bangkok (with only a few hours spent in stopovers)

Return: Phnom Penh - Hong Kong - Toronto - Ottawa

The HK - TO flight is 15 and a half hours, so a bit of a killer. I'll be well fortified with a happy shake before getting on that long-hauler!

(btw, I'll check out your photobucket recommendation, thanks!)

I'm all too familiar with flights over 12 hours. I almost always go from Tokyo to Detroit and that's 13-14 hours. Toss in two more flights, one to get TO Tokyo and one FROM Detroit to my hometown and my usual travel time with bs layovers is around 24 hours.

The longest door to door trip I've had was from Osaka to Marbella, Spain...(3 trains, somehow only 2 planes, and a taxi)...

My place to the airport (1 hour), Osaka to Singapore (8-9 hours?), 6 hour layover, Singapore to Paris (14-15 hours?), 2 hour layover, Paris to Madrid (2 hours), Madrid to Malaga [train] (4 hours?), Malaga to Marbella [taxi] (a mere .5 hours but I was well obliterated by then].

I don't even want to add all that but the times are pretty accurate I think. I remember the night before that I was out with friends and got home around 3am. Me being me, I was worried i wouldn't be able to wake up for my 9am flight so I stayed up a few more hours and left my place around 6am. I barely slept on any of those flights or trains either so by the time I got to the place in Marbella I was looking at maybe just 2-3 hours of sleep spread out over the previous 50.

Flew from SLC to Toronto to Montreal yesterday. I'm officially an international traveler!

Interesting to be in a place that mostly forgoes English

Some dude from Quebec got snooty at me randomly in Vancouver because a) I was American and b) I did't speak French.

f**k him!

Some Welsh girl got snooty at me randomly here in Japan because I'm American. She proclaimed "Why do YOU Americans always wear those 'Love it or leave it' t-shirts with the American flag on them?!"

I told her she was fat and ugly and walked away.

Not really. But I should've!!!!

True about the Welsh girl's comment though.

That's a nice way to welcome visitors to your country - berate them!

The wife and I have discussed taking another trip to Cancun Mexico. We went in 2015, and had an amazing time.

We didn't really go anywhere this year because we moved in May. Too much work to do on the new house to entertain traveling. No time. No money. : (
