Lack of Geddy Lee bass solos

I really don't like comparisons because each players are different in there own styles.Chris Squire was a brilliant player but his style was different(he played with a pick mostly).Yes's music had space for extravagant solos.I see Rush's music more compact especially 80s on and a big bass solo from Ged would seem out of place.Actually i was expecting a full blown bass show off track on his solo album.Perhaps he is just happy to groove along with the rest of the band and leave the grandiose solo spot to Neil .Just imagine 3xdvds of Anatomy of a Bass Solo.

He has solos, just not extended ones like Squire did. La Villa, YYZ, Show Don't Tell, live renditions of Driven and Where's My Thing?, and quite a few other songs all have some awesome mini-solos.

Geddy was not nearly as good as Chris Squire.

That's debatable actually....I think Geddy by necessity had to adopt a different style from Squire as he was required to occupy more space due to Rush being a three piece...I don't think Squires technique would have worked so well on the early Rush albums with it's lack of bottom end and emphasis on melody over rhythm....he didn't have to occupy so much space with the monster keys behind him.

If Geddy had been a founding member of Yes, then maybe his style would have been different?....of course, we'll never know.

I think Geddy stepped out of his comfort zone more often. He took more risks than Chris Squire. Both are masters, why compare?

I think a 'High Water'mark for Geddy is his playing in the instrumental part of Freewill. But everyones going for it which makes it exciting, soughta like Cream when they were going spastic live(I'm So Glad).Unfortunately extended bass solos generally get dull unless your superhuman like Jaco,Stanley Clarke or Sheehan.Even Jack Bruce could get tediuos as on his solo spot on Powerhouse Sod on Live n Kickin by West,Bruce and Laing.

As much as I love bass guitar I find bass solos boring by themselves....I prefer 100% quick snapshots of funky dosages or like Leave that thing alone/Freewill/Show don´t tell the bass" solo" inserted as part of the song...that is what really grabs me by the..... :7up:

Take all other instruments from Turn the Page and you have yourself a bass solo.

I need to give that another listen.

Really though you could probably say that about most/all rush songs lol

I forgot Red Barchetta...does not get any better as far as bass solos is concerned....fast , furious, funky...great tone....

Brucey, can you post a link to the video you were watching with Chris? I'm too worn out to look for it.

http://youtu.be/FHFox6wyXfw

Looks like he packed on a few ounces.

Says the video isn't available in my country.

Thank you anyway! :)

Edit: I found one from Boston for the 2014 tour: https://youtu.be/9nd.../9nd3wDyfsTY

I see Jon made himself useful during the song. ;)

Just been sifting through the Rush catalogue trying to find a song where Ged does the opposite and just plonks on the root note for a whole song. Not having much success.

Only song that comes to mind anything like that is Bravado.
