Amazing!

I saw this before, it'll make you lose a few points in faith toward humanity that's for sure.

The stories from the crew who had to kidnap this whale from its parents when it was a baby were terrible. Even they were almost crying!

I saw one last night on Netflix about John Dupont and his wrestling compound called Team Foxcatcher. I never followed this story when it was going on and knew nothing about any of these guys before last night. It was really pretty good, I'd recommend it.

It's actually pretty scary to see this guy go from lovable outsider to friggin' crazy in a bag. The home movies in this make the story.

Team Foxcatcher sounds like a good documentary. I'll see if I can find it on Netflix :)

Found it and saw it. You we're right. The home movies make the story. The part where he shouts something like "f**k the world. I'll kill them all" and they keep laughing was creepy.

Or the times they'd show him on the sidelines just nervously watching and being all fidgety that way only crazies can bring to the table.

Amazing!

This documentary was well done, but it only told one side of the story. Because of that, it came across to me as more of a propaganda piece.

I think propaganda is too strong a word, but definitely one-sided.

Well, it definitely had an agenda and it left me with more questions than answers. I think it made some valid points, but I would have liked to hear at least some of the other side to know how valid they were.

Absolutely. It's a shame Sea World refused to partake.

Which is another reason that makes you wonder how fair the documentary was.

There are many documentaries with obvious agendas that have taken things out of context or used "creative editing" to make some people look bad and others look good. Many organizations simply refuse to participate if they believe this will be the end result. Documentaries that do this rub me the wrong way.

Like I say, Blackfish made some good points, but I don't think that they told the whole story.

I did notice however that not too long after this documentary was available on Netflix I started seeing a lot of Seaworld commercials about how well they treat their animals (and killer whales in particular). And I NEVER saw any SeaWorld commercials in my town before then, ever.

The bad press from Blackfish must be killing them at the ticketlines.

I'm sure it was a huge PR mess for them, which is sad because I like Seaworld and I think they do a lot more good than harm, even if everything in Blackfish is completely accurate.

One of the most mesmerizing documentaries I've seen is The Bridge. A controversial film, it documents a camera's 365-day observation of the Golden gate Bridge, followed by follow-up stories on the jumpers caught on film. Here's the opening scene...

Yeah, but it's also very insightful, I think, in terms of understanding the depths of despair that some people feel, and how others can be affected by it.

Agreed.

And sort of depressing.

A fascinating look into the design and development of the Deep/Dark Web via Tor and Bitcoin, and the rise of the libertarian-based open market known as Silk Road. It explores the underlying philosophy of the Silk Road and its administrator Dread Pirate Roberts, and the alleged evolution of the Silk Road from libertarian safe-haven into a criminal enterprise that included large-scale drug trading and hit-men for hire.

Powerful. A chronological presentation of first-person accounts of the Black American experience from '67-75, including Stokely Carmichael, Eldridge Cleaver, Huey Newton, Malcom X, Angela Davis...

I haven't seen it, but I watched the Angela David interview about her "thoughts on violence".

That was quite good. The question of non-violence would make a goid SOCN thread.

The story of the 2008 assault on K2 that resulted in 11 fatalities, seven of which occurred on the descent. The film documents the delays of the ascent that were caused by weather, and the fateful decision-making process that led to a crowded, slow ascent which, in turn, led to a dangerous descent.
