I would make this comparison of albums:

Rush debut vs LZ debut - LZ by a landslide

1)2112 vs LZ 1 - LZ 1

2)AFTK vs LZ II - LZ II

3)Hemispheres vs LZ III - Hemispheres

4)PeW vs LZ IV - LZ IV

5)MP vs HoH - MP

6)Signals vs Physical Graffiti - PG by far.

That's it.

Wow. Not much of a Rush fan, are you?

;)

OK then. A question for you: Signals or Physical Graffiti?

I think if you would ask Alex Lifesson this, I'm pretty sure that his answer would be: "PG by a lightyear". ;)

That's a bit different. No one thinks their music is better than their idols. I love Signals. Took me a lot of years, and if you'd asked me in the late 80s which I had preferred I might have slightly edged towards PG. But now, no contest.

That's because LZ has nothing more to offer than their music. With Rush, it's a lot more than just their music. At least, that's how I see it.

Rush is enduring.

Very good point.

LedZed offers 100% more lemon squeezing than Rush.

I hate to break it to you, but anywhere outside a Rush fan forum, this wouldn't even be a contest...there is no way in a million years that most people would view Rush as a rock "titan" in the same league as Zep.

Myself, I prefer Rush.....they were much more consistent imo in their earlier years than Zep were, and live much, much tighter....

Let me express my thoughts as follows:

Vocals: Geddy vs. Plant - I prefer Geddy. Not close. (I am not a big Robert Plant fan - he does not really rank all that high on my list of great singers)

Base: Geddy Vs. John Paul Jones - I prefer Geddy. Not close.

Drums: Neil Vs. John Bonham - I prefer Neil. Plus I don't think JB was a big influence on Neil. I think Keith Moon was more of an influence. It s fairly close but Neil is my preference.

Guitar - Alex Vs. Page - Very, very close. Page had more of an impact on Rock (IMO) but slightly prefer Alex's style. Basically a draw.

Song Lyrics - Zeppelin has some magnificent lyrics. Rush has magnificent lyrics. Then some more wonderful lyrics. Then Neil grew and changed what he was writing about (around the time of MP / Signals). I don't hear Zep making such a transition. Based on volume of greatness and an ability to grow Rush is my preference. Not their fault that Zep could not change - it was the sad loss of JB that may, or may not, have prevented that. But even so, Rush, prior to MP / Signals was better than Zep at its best. And much of Neil's best was yet to come.

Music - both are great. But I prefer Rush.

I think you can see where I am going. Rush gets my vote. Frankly, if you matched The Who up against Rush, now that would be an interesting & difficult match up. Much harder to pick.

apples and oranges

^^^^^^ This picture says it. I actually love BOTH Rush and Led Zeppelin, and people tend to forget that if it wasn't for them, we wouldn't have Rush (or Queen, Foo Fighters...you get the point). I couldn't vote for one or the other in this forum. Can we have The Beatles in this poll as well ;) . And I actually think Houses of the Holy is an underrated Led Zeppelin album.

On a Rush forum, wonder what the result will be ! :rfl:

The Rush star has burned for 40 years, at some times dimmer than others.

LZ's star burned supernova bright for a short period of time.

Close, but LZ has always been and probably always will be my favorite band.

Rush is a close 2nd though.

I'm going to have to vote Rush.

Right now I'm not into Rush. But if I judge the entire discography of Led Zeppelin, they fizzled out by like 1975 and wussed their way to the very end.

Rush took a bit of time getting to grips with being ABSOLUTELY AWESOME and once they did maintained it across three and more decades with a new sound it seems every record.

Rush. LZ have killer material but Rush are bae.

my logic too. Zep in reality for me has 2 albums i call essential rush has 7 or 8.

but then again Rush outlived Zep so......lol

28:3 votes for Rush? Such a huge difference?

Some time ago I said that I like LZ IV better than Permanent Waves, but now I changed my mind. PeW is my fave Rush album and it beats LZ IV.

Overall LZ still wins in my book. And I still think they are a better band.

Well, 2 other TRFers agree with you. I actually think that's an achievement. And I'm serious. I'm not sure if there are any bands who would be able to get more than 5 votes vs Rush. It's not a surprising thing of course since this a Rush message board

Yeah, you are right. But it is possible only here, on pretty much any other rock music forum Rush would be crushed by Zep.

No surprise there either.

There's never a right answer when a preference question is posed.

Let's see...album-wise, I'd say...

RUSH debut > Zep I

Zep II > FBN

Caress of Steel > Zep III

Zep IV > 2112

Houses of the Holy > AFTK

Physical Graffiti > Hemispheres

PWaves > Presence

Moving Pictures > ITTOD

ATWAS/ESL > SRTS

Studio-wise it's a toss-up for me, but live, RUSH slays the mighty Zep.

I find about 75% of LZ songs boring.

I find about 75% of Rush songs in the synth era up through but not including VT boring.

2112-MP blows Zep's entire catalog away though. Almost pure perfection from the Canucks during that time. And there's probably enough from the debut through CoS and VT-CA that's as good as Zep.
