Live From The Rabbit Hole

So it looks like the guys who supposedly had a incredibly large amount of pro shot footage from tours that we didn't get any DVD or album up until now are finally starting to release it. I'm sure everyone knows by now, but with the new R40 doc "Time Stand Still" comes extra pro shot footage from the PResto tour, entitled "Live From The Rabbit Hole." Any thoughts?

It can't be worse that what we have seen on the Presto tour :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBd8QxK2oE8

That was not even close to the worst. Available Light is what the some people are saying this extra stuff is supposed to be. There's no way rush would sell anything of that quality. It is not good, but contains one of their best sets of the tour. This vid is Mountain Views (or A View From The Mountain, I forget which one is which) and is waaaay better quality.

I can't stress enough that Rush has access to TONS of pro-shot footage that was always ready just in case they wanted to make a lconcert film. I would expect neither of those two boots to be the source of this new bonus content.

So it's going to be the show at auburn hills march 8th already available in You Tub, just frustrating that it's not the complete show.

That's where the clips from the doc appear to be from. The quality doesn't look that much better than the low-gen stuff that's already out there, but at least there's an official release. It would have made sense to release the whole show (which I'm sure will happen in the future based on the past several years. Laura Secord.... Capitol Theatre....)

I can't remember if I have the Palace DVD or not, but I have the whole show on video. Visually, the 3/8/90 Detroit show is better than Mountainview.

You think so? I agree that in terms of wide shots and overall coverage and stuff it's better captured as a show but I've got both the Mountain View and Auburn Hills shows from 1990 and I think Mountain view is much cleaner audio and video-wise. That's why I was shocked to hear people say the bonus content comes from the Auburn Hills proshot. Bordercollie wrote elsewhere - "The Presto footage is indeed from the Auburn Hills March 8 show. Sounded fantastic and looked much better than what has been floating around the internet/trading circles. The played a montage of Red Barchetta through the years and there were brief audio/video clips from various releases, including the "new" Presto footage." But I haven't seen the doc yet so I'll be curious to see for myself.

Secondly, TFEman wrote above "I can't stress enough that Rush has access to TONS of pro-shot footage that was always ready just in case they wanted to make a lconcert film. I would expect neither of those two boots to be the source of this new bonus content." but I couldn't disagree more. While their live audio recordings are almost surely extensive I'm pretty sure their video library is virtually exhausted other than the remaining half of the Toronto TFE show. The only hope for any other proshot shows would be if somehow another venue filmed show leaked. I'm still holding out hope that the RTB tour was also fully filmed at Auburn Hills. There are so many proshot clips from throughout the show and the previous and following tours were both filmed there.

Other than that? We'd have to get really lucky that maybe one of the other venues like the Houston Summit that filmed often may have something in their vault. But that's about it. The ONLY other hope I see is more footage from shows we've already seen. For example, the Atlanta show in 2008 that the four bonus songs were pulled from. They obviously filmed more because there are several other different songs on Neil's own dvd that were filmed there. And then of course there's the slim hope that the remaining footage from the three 80s shows could be found and restored. I don't think we'll ever see any more of those though. But people who are just assuming that Rush has all these proshot shows just sitting in a vault are not realistic at all about that. I've heard people say things like "They should release a dvd from the Signals tour" or some other random thing as though they can just go back in time and film stuff. Filming a show is a major undertaking and is also almost impossible to do without people knowing. The idea that they set up (especially 20 or more years ago when there weren't even rearscreen cameras) and filmed shows that we don't know about is just fantasy.

So those are my thoughts...

That may be true, but the footage from the doc seems to indicate it's from Auburn Hills because the clothes they are wearing in those clips match the Detroit show.

I'm not 100 percent sure on this but I think Auburn Hills may have been a pay-per-view show which would make it more likely that the band would have a copy of it.

But then the question becomes: Why not release the whole thing? (I have to admit this is my least favorite tour probably ever, so I would just rather hear the Presto songs and maybe a few other good performances of the oldies.)

I think the Mountain View performance is better than Auburn Hills myself, but they may not have a copy of that.

I said that because I was told that by someone that the band supposedly sits on a lot of footage from a couple of tours. I never said I believe it, or that I know 100% for a fact. It was also kind-of an assumption, considering how on almost all of their live albums before R30, they have bonus tracks from different dates during the tour, or in the case of Different Stages, different dates from an entirely different tour.

Well like I said, they definitely have tons of professionally recorded audio, there's no question about that. We know at a minimum they recorded a bunch on the Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Power Windows, Hold Your Fire, Counterparts, and Test For Echo tours. Hearing tracks in recent years like from Edmonton in 1981 is exciting knowing we could potentially be hearing a lot more. That clip sounds better than anything on ESL in my opinion (audio-wise). I think we'll certainly get more archive releases from time to time, and I think we'll get the full Toronto 1997 show on dvd. So I'm not being doom and gloom. But I wouldn't expect much more in the way of pro shot video unless like I said, another venue filmed show leaks. I'd love to be proven wrong though!

And I'm really excited about getting to hear more tracks recorded for the ATWAS album. I never would have thought that would happen. They also edited out some of the 1978 show on Different Stages. So we know that have a lot more audio.

I know 100% that the footage that will be released as an extra on Time Stand Still will be great. The bootlegs of the show on the internet are very high gen, I remember reading it was 9th gen. I'm very sure Rush has the original master tapes or 2nd gen tapes and that's what we'll be getting. I'm not worried about the audio quality, the video quality might not be amazing. I'm sure when we get it, it will be just as good as any other official live release.

My copy that I pre-ordered was supposed to come on release date and now is being delayed until monday or tuesday, and I REALLY want to see Scars pro shot with professional sound/visual quality. I heard that each song fades in and out, is this true? That seems to be kind of awkward, oh well I can just rip the dvd and segue the audio together and make a little mini concert CD so that shouldn't be an issue.

Mountain view was superior in Audio quality but I felt that the auburn hills pro shot had better video quality. I think both bootlegs kind of suck and the only decent bootleg to come from that tour was a soundboard from the hartford 90, but even then it's still not great. It seems a lot of people were a little weary about the inclusion of the presto footage on Time Stand Still but frankly im so glad they did! Songs like Scars, War Paint, and Superconductor haven't been officially released live and I think the whole album killed great songs with lame production and when played live there was a certain energy that was present that wasn't on the actual album and I think the inclusion of this footage is absolutely necessary. Especially Scars, which I think is such an unappreciated song and I don't get it. Infectious bassline, cool guitar improv by Alex (especially live, he really shreds on his guitar in some sections) and the African style drumming is pretty freaking great.

Totally agree, I'm loving everything about this footage, the visuals and audio are great and the performances are terrific. All the Presto songs in particular though really shine. I saw that tour twice, in San Antonio and Dallas, and it was loud as hell (maybe the loudest I've ever heard them out of over 40 shows starting in 1988) and the new songs really impressed. I'm so glad we finally have high quality live official versions of these, just like I really appreciate all the previously unreleased live TFE stuff on the 1997 Toronto show.

And yeah, I love that Hartford show as well.

Oh, I'm not arguing the source, I'm sure it's Auburn Hills. My "You think so?" was about your last sentence that Auburn Hills is better visually than MV.

It's been a while since I've watched both (Have the DVD now but will watch later) but I remember a lot more shots of the band during Auburn Hills, but I think performance-wise and visually Mountain View has the edge, but I just recall a lot of screen shots and dead space when I last watched the Mountain View show (Unless there are different recordings floating around which would mean I have an inferior copy.

Not as enthused as I hoped to be over the bonus footage. There's an improvement, but not as much as I was hoping for. (I wonder if they have the master of if they just remastered a you tube video ? Is there a way to tell?)

But I'm sure I've been spoiled by watching this show about once every few years since it came out a few months after the gig. I do love the Presto songs though and it's nice for them to get a commercial release. Maybe the Presto Tour being my least favorite Rush tour ever may have something to do with it too. Not enough live Presto songs either.

Always loved the drum flourish at the end of Superconductor too.
