  1. 1. Which Album Do You Like More ?

Sometime in January of 1980, you buy Permanent Waves .. It was yet another magical step into new territory, and after a few listens, you are already thinking "Album Of The Year"

What a way to start the decade

Then, come August, a band that had seemingly fallen apart, losing their voice in Jon Anderson and one of the most incredible musicians ever to grace the world of rock, Rick Wakeman ..

An album that had disaster written all over it ..

But Drama was anything but ... In fact, Drama is a masterpiece, and in my book, stands alone in the Yes catalog in being completely unique ..

Who comes out on top ??

I remember I bought both albums at the same time but probably about a year or so after they were released.Permanent Waves I don't know why I didn't purchase straight away.Drama was because Tormato had been lousy and Anderson and Wakerman had been replaced by that Buggles mob.Horrors.Permanent Waves wins it for me but I do like Drama even though I be pressed to remember a melody on it.

Wow Lucas!

Cool thread. I can't even comprehend comparing "Drama" to "Permanent Waves" but I certainly love adding DRAMA to the RUSH FORUM! LOL!

"Big Generator" is better than "Drama!"

Big Yes fan, especially at the time Drama was released. But I never liked it. It sounds like a band trying to sound like Yes.

Permanent Waves has its flaws but contains some of the band's best work.

I may make you feel but I can't make you think.

When I think of albums that are in the same ballpark as Permanent Waves, I think of Jethro Tull's Aqualung and Thick As A Brick & Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here and Animals.

And after a while, you can work on points for style.

Do you think you can tell?

But I'd still probably pick Permanent Waves over all four of these other perfect albums. Additionally, I can't think of any Yes album that puts me anywhere near the same land as any I've mentioned.

don't you start away uneasy

you poor old sod, you see, it's only me

if you'd said to me Waves v Tormato or Going For The One I'd have actually given the matter a few seconds whimsical thought before arriving of course at the conclusion 'why am i even thinking about this?'

Permanent Waves of course. Drama never did anything for me actually.

Mindyou, Tormato & GFTO are pretty awesome

If I recall correctly Tormato was my first Yes "new release" purchase and love it to this day. Different strokes for folks I suppose. It's a bit weird in places but in a great way in my view...

This^^^ exactly. I would choose GFTO over probably any studio album ever though by anyone. It's just brilliant in my view...

Narps recommended me GFTO and Tormato.

So naturally I went for Tales From...

But when I did reach these albums I really found them to be terrific.

Drama is great as well. But that run of albums from the debut through to Tormato is near flawless.

Third to Springsteen and Kansas for my favourite album run of the seventies.

HUGH SYME > ROGER DEAN

oh nooooooooooooooooo !!

:D

I agree.

I don't like anything much by Hugh. His work always looks half baked to my eyes.

From the massive opening riffs to Machine Messiah to the yes, yes, yes, yes . . . that ends the album, Drama for me is perfect ... Each song stands on its own as an absolute gem ..

While Jacob's Ladder is in my Top 5 songs of all-time, and Natural Science is classic, Permanent Waves as a whole just isn't up there with Drama ..

Into The Lens and Run Through The Light is where Drama takes off and doesn't look back
