The 10 Commandments of Rush

Thou shalt not prefer Rutsey over Peart.

You are a bit unfair to Rutsey.....

He was a good drummer as well, and Rush would not have been here today if it was not for him.

Not unfair to Rutsey at all. He was a good drummer, but Neil made Rush great with his drumming and his lyrics. If Rutsey had stayed in the band, Rush would have been done by 1976. The best thing he did for the band was to leave.

It is unfair to Rutsey.

Care to make your case, or are you going act like a 4 year old and just say it is unfair?

btw, I am not the only one saying that is unfair.

I am with Zu Zu on this. I agree with what he said above.

Yes, I know he posted it originally. I remain unimpressed.

It is no slight to Rutsey to prefer Peart over him. It is an empirical fact that Peart is better than Rutsey.

I prefer roast beef over dried toast! It's unfair!

What's this 'unfair' crap?!

Jeff Jones, a very accomplished and successful musician, was Rush's original bassist and vocalist. But I prefer Geddy over him. Is that unfair?

I'm glad you get to go to Toronto! So this is a t shirt for yourself, or will you be selling them?

Yes, I will be selling them! I will post it on this thread when I'm finished. :)

good idea but be prepared for a cease and desist order courtesy of Ray Danniels.

A few ideas:

thou shalt be willing to sacrifice housing, children and/or food for concert tickets.

thou shalt shower god-like praise on Neil to scare him

thou shalt pretend that Neil's writings are interesting

thou shalt state that soup is your favorite food

thou shalt defend to death your favorite and least favorite albums

thou shalt chase and stalk all red BMW motorcycles in the faint hope that it's Neil

John Rustey brought What You're Doing to life - he played it better than Neil ever did ..

Does that make him a better drummer ?? ... Of course not, but as great as All The World's A Stage is, the best version of one of my favorite Rush songs has Rutsey drumming on it ..

Neil brought the song to a halt

I guess my argument would be that even if we can all accept that Peart is a more diverse, technically superior, etc. drummer, there really isn't anything to be gained by printing that "fact" on a t-shirt.

Whatever you want to say about Rutsey's drumming (to my ear he sounds pretty good and helps propel those tunes just fine), he was there at the beginning and so deserves a little respect at least. Judging from the live videos on the R40 set, he seems to have been more of a spokesman the band - who knows, maybe his enthusiasm was a huge part of keeping them together in those early days.

It's not saying Rutsey is a bad drummer/wasnt significant to the band by any means, It's just that Neil was obviously what made the band who they are today, with all their amazing music. I agree that if Rutsey had stayed in the band they would have been done a long time ago.

Putting John Rutsey in the same category as murder, adultery, stealing is not something any Rush fan would do, regardless of how good Neil was ..

By all accounts, he left the band because of a medical condition, but to say the band would have been done a long time ago is ridiculous ... Alex, for one, grew as a musician over the years, so who says Rutsey wouldn't have ??

I think a little more creativity would go a long way with this

A slight word tweaking of the actual Ten Commandments would be best. Otherwise, you just end up with random Rush stuff said after "Thou shalt". For example, "Thou shalt Roll the Bones" is pretty crap and something I just thought of as I typed this.

Moral of the story:

Thou shalt not post **** without repercussions

Alex said that if John had stayed with the band they probably would have stayed a bar band around Toronto.

They are Rush, who hath shown you rock majesty. You shall worship no other power trio before them

You shall not conceive of Rush as being other than Lee, Lifeson, and Peart

You shall not utter Rush's name in any but the most reverent tones

Remember to set aside part of your day to listen to the music of Rush; for they hath crafted this music for your ears most righteously

Honor your brothers and sisters, or parents, or friends, who introduceth the music of Rush to your life

You shall not pretend a stranger is a long-awaited friend

You shall not forget to keep the heart and mind united

You shall choose a path that's clear

You shall not rent thy mind to any god or government

You shall take a friend and keep 'em till the end.

Thanks - tried to mirror the actual commandments, but then I kind of lost it. I'm not sure what a good analog is for "you shall not kill"!

Aye! That's what I did and said earlier and that's why I only had 3 listed. I just got lazy.
