ytserush
:bump: New album, F.E.A.R., or f**k Everyone And Run, is out tomorrow!!!!! Hoping mine is at home, it was posted on Monday from Marillion HQ! *waits for the usual FISH GREAT H CRAP wankfest* Should be arriving any day now. I haven't listened to a note of it yet, but I'm sure I'll like it. (I just didn't want my name in the liner notes in case I didn't like it.) I hope they play a lot of the new stuff live and avoid anything from Brave and Afraid Of Sunlight. And since I'm asking, anything from the Fish years unless Hogarth holds the mike out and lets us sing it.

Day of Light
I love Marillion and would love to see them in Montreal at some point. Instantly was a fan of Steve's voice although it's taking me a while to get through the entire discography. It's relaxed. I like Fish era as well, my personal favourite of the albums being, unsurprisingly, Fugazi.

treeduck
I don´t compare the two eras of the band at all - they are two completely different bands depending on who´s singing. I prefer Fish-era Marillion, and although the "other band with the same name" has some good songs (Easter, Hooks in You, Beautiful etc), I dislike 95% of their output.25 years of material with H, and the ones you mentioned are from when he first joined the band. They have come along way in evolving into the brilliant band they are currently. H Marillion isn't good, its outstanding!Further evidence that Ticky is insane!
treeduck
Marillion are a band for old Geography teachers who ride a scooter to work. That one should drag Hatchy back.Oh I see I found this thread already...
treeduck
I like the Fish-era. Clutching at Straws and Misplaced Childhood are amazing albums. Fish has some great solo albums too. Hogarth-era... well... not really. There are occasional good moments in those albums but overall it's too much like Radiohead... read: "impotent, castrated new-age Brit prog".I see zero in common between H Marillion and Radiohead. Really? I see a lot in common. Maybe not musically... but how both bands lack "power" and ability to hit the listener on the "gut level". And don't think I haven't listened to both bands... I really tried to like Marbles and Brave as my friends praised them. I also tried to like In Rainbows, OK Computer and Kid A. I gave these albums a lot of time but they simply don't hit me at all... they're impotent music in very similar way. Thom Yorke sounds like a castrated sheep... Hogarth is much better but at times he falls into the same hole... too much quiet moments... you know King Crimson's "Moonchild"? Same problem... fake-artsy-impotent. And it's not like he doesn't have talent... When Hogarth makes a rock song, he can sometimes hit the nail on the head. "Man of a thousand faces" for example... very good song. That's how I see it... it's not for me. But hey... opinions are like...I won't presume to tell you what your own ears like and don't like. If you don't like H Marillion then you don't.I own OK Computer and find it an ok album. (pun intended) I never felt the need to explore Radiohead any further than that. I personally find H era Marillion to be powerful, emotional, and brilliantly written and arranged. and H is an amazingly captivating front man when I have seen him live on many occasion dating back to 1987.Tick came out of his cave as soon as a someone made a Marillion thread I see! :eyeroll: :PI bet he made this thread himself! :LOLsign:This old post amuses me. :smoke:
toymaker
I love Marillion and would love to see them in Montreal at some point. Instantly was a fan of Steve's voice although it's taking me a while to get through the entire discography. It's relaxed. I like Fish era as well, my personal favourite of the albums being, unsurprisingly, Fugazi. I don't have my copy of Fugazi anymore, and I haven't listened to it in ages. That's the one with Assassing and Punch and Judy? I remember quite liking it when I was younger. There's a nice tune on there that has a little keyboard thing (sort of like Max Webster's Diamonds Diamonds) and a chorus that goes "Stand straight - look me in the eye, say goodbye" - I can't remember what it's called, but I think it was my favorite tune on the record. edit - just looked it up - Jigsaw. Good tune. It's funny, I kind of forgot about this album. After some digging into my brain, I finally remembered what happened to all my old Marillion lps - including a bunch of picture disc singles, the live record Real to Reel - I gave them to a buddy who was a bigger fan than I was. But I did find my vinyl copy of Thieving Magpie, which I think I'll listen to tomorrow. That's the tour I saw them on, and I quite enjoyed the show. My record store buddy got me backstage, where I watched in awe as Fish inhaled a bottle of JD. I'm not sure I could listen to really old things like Grendel and Market Square Heroes. ytserush
I love Marillion and would love to see them in Montreal at some point. Instantly was a fan of Steve's voice although it's taking me a while to get through the entire discography. It's relaxed. I like Fish era as well, my personal favourite of the albums being, unsurprisingly, Fugazi. Up until recently, Marillion held regular weekend conventions in Montreal. Never made one despite a few other people trying to convince me otherwise. I love Fugazi. I think it's overlooked because of what came after but those songs are killer live. Jigsaw is definitely a favorite. I'm not fan of Thieving Magpie (although the track list is great) because it doesn't come close to doing Marillion justice as a live band, but the version of Jigsaw is pretty freaking amazing. Even Fish's last two albums, 13th Star and Feast of Consequences, are among the best work he's ever done. I'm really liking FEAR right now. It's definitely a grower .I really like the way Hogarth's voice has settled in now. Maybe not as good as on This Strange Engine, but still pretty good.
