This is a ridiculous thing to complain about, but I'm gonna anyway.

I dropped ONE chopstick on the floor here at work right after opening them. This floor is beyond disgusting, never gets vacuumed. So, the five second rule doesn't apply. I let out a very audible, NOOOOOO!!!! :rage: Eating sushi with a fork was weird, like on another plane of consciousness weird. And, it was one of those super flimsy, sub-plastic, mega cheap things from our break room, which made it worse somehow. I'll always grab a back up pair of chopsticks from now on.

(MOD EDIT: This convo started in the "What pissed you off today?" thread in RS, and while it started as a thing to complain about, it turned into a legit convo about sushi and chopsticks. And since we didn't have a sushi thread in the food section, splitting this off into a new thread seemed like a good idea..)

The floor here is so nasty, so no. But, it's a stupid complaint.

I'm sorry about your back. :( I hope it feels better soon.

I've had to eat sushi with a fork a couple of times out of necessity, like you had to do today. You might as well be eating a waffle. It just isn't sushi without chopsticks.

Someone needs to invent scissor-action wooden clamps for us losers who can't operate regular chopsticks. Period. I'm not to the point yet where I have to ninja my food in order to injest it.....I'm starting to like SHRIMP in my chinese food also....http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j223/OldRUSHfan/ethnicities/chinese2-smiley.gif

Incorrect!!! ;)

Really though, just use your hands. Many say that the "proper" way IS to use your hands. Chopsticks are for something else:

I was going to say that but ...

In the late seventies I worked with a former Marine who had been stationed in Okinawa. He was the one who introduced me to sushi. There was a Japanese restaurant on 55th Street in NYC we used to go all the time that had a sushi bar. We always used our hands to eat it. I should add that it was a popular place for the Japanese businessmen in the area, and they always ate sushi with their hands too.

All I can say is this: in the hundreds of sushi restaurants I've eaten at here in Japan, not once have I seen anyone use their hands. Not a single time. And I've lived here over a decade. However, a few times at house parties, I've noticed people using their hands. If you ask people about this they'll TELL you that it's ok to use your hands...but THEY never do it themselves.

Just thinking about the hands vs chopsticks thing a little more...

Probably, one of the reasons I don't see many locals using their hands for eating sushi is that that's the more traditional way to eat it. I bet if I traveled back in time even just to the Karate Kid Daniel Laruso days there'd be a much greater number using their hands instead of chopsticks. This would fit with Lorraine's experience back in the day of seeing the J-business men using their hands.

Years ago one of my older J-friends (then in his early 60s) told me " the actual way to eat sushi is with your hands". At the time, we were in a sushi bar so I said to him, "But Teri, you're using chopsticks now." He goes, "Yes". And that was that. True story. To me, his simple and straight-faced answer ((which isn't meant to be funny... but is)) is so "Japanese".

I'm pretty good with chopsticks now, but fingers would certainly be easier. On a similar note, I've read that it's improper to use chopsticks with nigiri.

Just had some with the wife last night. And we both used chopsticks.

Some of the west's ideas on Japanese customs are often correct but when it comes to actual practice, they (the customs) sometimes don't hold.

And then there's the actual technique of holding chopsticks. To old school conservatives, I don't hold chopsticks correctly. I've been told as much...then showed the proper way....but then I revert back to my barbaric method of holding chopsticks by the next meal. ;)

HOWEVER, to the non-old schoolers, I've been told: "You're very good at using chopsticks" ((<----- this itself is an expat joke out here because we're all told that at some point...I'm digressing)).

OR nobody tells me anything because the truth is, most Japanese don't even hold/use chopsticks "the proper way" any way.

In the most extreme case, I knew a snooty, old school ultra J-conservative that said: "You can tell a 'true' Japanese of sophistication and proper upbringing by the way they hold their chopsticks". I toss that opinion out though because it's an anomaly. Most people aren't that uptight of a dick.

The few people that showed me the correct way to hold chopsticks weren't doing so in any uppity or condescending manner.

Thank you for that link, Johnny. I've always put the ginger on my sushi. Now, I know better! And, I'm one of those who likes to eat the fish and rice separately. I like being able to taste the fish by itself. If it's really high-quality, it's like heaven! I like rolls, but the simpler, the better. Fish and rice. That's all I need.

As long as we have a sushi thread going here...

Mmm, sushi! People seem surprised that, as a vegetarian, I love sushi. However, "sushi" is just the term for a certain kind of little rolls/pieces of food with rice, and does not need to include fish. There is some fantastic vegetarian/vegan sushi out there. In fact, a vegan sushi restaurant recently opened in San Francisco and not only are they delicious, their presentation blows most sushi restaurants out of the water.

That's true (about the non-fish sushi). I'm trying hard to think of a non-seafood sushi roll that I've seen out here but I can only remember one with corn.

The best non-fish sushi for me is probably shrimp. Raw shrimp isn't that tasty to me so I prefer the cooked ones.

Other non-fish sushi...

Octopus -- ok but I can skip it.

Squid -- Cooked squid (especially deep fried) is fine but raw ---> there's a 32.4391379% chance of me choking on that. That shit doesn't go down very easily!

Sea urchin -- pretty gross

Salmon roe -- might as well just squirt any random juice down my throat and except the consequences of that

I love many things coming from the Rising Sun, but nothing can beat a grilled slice of tuna or swordfish and salted cod.

Oh yeah, my favorite fish to beat would be grilled salmon or grilled swordfish. Imho, best grilled salmon or swordfish vs the best sushi would be like the Super Bowl champ vs the BCS champ.
