The reason I learned to cook was. I would watch my mother often times. As the years went by our parents were always out some where. My younger sisters would always beg me to cook. Especially tacos. :D Edited by troutman

I watched my mother too, but how come it didn't help me? :LOL: My mother could whip a complete meal up in no time flat. I used to watch her make her own steak fries while she was broiling my steak. I've never been able to make my steaks exactly like she did, and I sure as heck can't make steak fries. :ph34r:

First of all,

 

Steak fries are easy. I guess like a lot of things It just come naturally.

The thing I learned from my Mom is how to make a complete and delicious meal with whatever is at hand. She raised me being a single parent and we were dirt poor. So what ever was available is what was on the menu. My wife still gets amazed (& sometimes a bit aggrivated) when she says there is nothing to make, or no food in the house and then I make a complete meal. Edited by Crimsonmistymemory

Generally I buy a lot of prepackaged stuff. I'm just not a very good cook, no matter how much I try. I think some people are just naturally talented.

Just keep it simple, try cooking two simple items like chicken breast and mushrooms and see how that goes.

EagleMoon, I don't think it's about natural talent. I think I'm a pretty decent cook and I assume duck is too BECAUSE I think we're both pretty methodical and organized about stuff in general. This would have to carry over into cooking. Growing up, I also watched my parents cook all the time. Mom was very good but dad was and still is the best cook I've seen. Watching dad work the knives, the stove, all the ingredients, and the time was like watching a Neil Peart solo. You aren't given that cooking talent, it's achieved through experience and experiments.

See that's where we're different. My mom rarely cooked when I was growing up. She worked and if she did it was generally on the weekend. Something like bacon and eggs and fried potatoes or maybe hamburgers on the grill. I just wasn't around it. I remember when I moved out on my own as an adult I didn't even know what to buy at the grocery. We just ate out a lot.

That looks delicious. My pot is oval and only a 5-qt. I think. I wonder if it would work as well in a 5 quart?

 

Sure, why not? You could make it as big or as small as the bottom of the pot.

Temps supposed to dip into the low sixties by Friday and stay there for the foreseeable future.

 

Just made a list of things to buy from supermarket to make pot roast in slow cooker, pecan pie in slow cooker, and mushroom barley soup! http://www.sherv.net/cm/emo/happy/girl-happy-dance-smiley-emoticon.gif

i was going to make this zucchini bread recipe this morning, but I don't have raisins. Do have walnuts though. Maybe I'll make it without the raisins.

 

What do you think of this recipe:

Nuts are very expensive out here. They went up a few years back and the price per pound never came back down. Used to be able to get walnuts for $3.99 a pound.

Mom's looks good. I have never had it.

 

The recipe I used was actually given to me by my own mother that I found in my recipe box.

 

I am about to cut myself a piece to see how it tuned out. From the taste of the batter, I am not expecting much, but we shall see.

 

 

Edit: It's not bad, but I don't think I would go through the trouble of making it again.

I love smoked almonds but way to expensive. Now I just buy a handful.

It's monday so tonight i'l be scoffing guacamole made with fresh (ish) off-cuts of tomato, corriander, chili and challots mixed with diced leftover chicken fillet and some "pinged" (microwaved) chorizo to go with some "iffy" defrosted wholegrain pitta bread and washing it down with a glug of beer.. or four.
