Vocally, what do you think were Geddy Lee's best and worst concerts?

I can't say this about the whole concert but at the start of R40 to be honest he sounded like he was having a hard time keeping his voice straight, which is unfortunate because it shows that he is not really a wizard who will sing and play until 2112 :finbar: Edited by tony990

Don't understand all the bashing of the Time Machine Tour. His voice wasn't the best, sure, but it was much better than Clockwork Angels Tour in my opinion. And his performance of "Working Man" was outstanding in Cleveland.

If the question was posed for this decade, I say Snakes and Arrows.

Much better than anything that followed.

I thought Geddy sounded great at the R-40 concert I attended. Better than the video.

Snakes was the last decent tour for his voice. After the inner ear/sinus thing he got during TM, he hasn't been the same since.

While I do agree that his voice did quite a change after the S&A tour, this is the first I have heard about inner ear/sinus issues. Can you expand on this?

Only other thing I remember is that he said that he had to have his ear drained and how that wasn't very pleasant. It's in some interview out there.

I did not necessarily doubt that, but I had not seen an interview about it. Maybe it is time to go digging.

I found the interview. It's here:

http://www.2112.net/powerwindows/transcripts/20120700fireworks.htm

Can't copy and paste it on my phone from this site but it starts about halfway down the page where it says "On the European leg of the Time Machine Tour...."

On the European leg of the Time Machine tour last year there was much online debate about Geddy's voice, and on the UK dates especially it was obvious that he wasn't his usual consistent self.

"I'd just got over strep throat before I came over to Europe and I had to be careful how I used it. It knocked me back quite seriously," he says honestly. "The other problem I had was that the infection had spread from my throat into my ear canal so I had to have my ear canal punctured before I came over to allow the infection to get out. To be honest it wasn't the most fun tour to do for me, but I thought we still pulled it off and played at a high level - there were some nights my voice felt quite fine and other nights I had to work a little harder."

There is an interview on YouTube where he talks about it also (I'm sorry I don't remember which one.) Geddy says he knew he had to get his ear drum punctured, but there was only one Dr. he trusted to do it, so he had to travel to Montreal to get it done. The interview is years later but I still felt really bad for him!

It's bad enough to have strep throat but to have to have something like that done too sounds nasty. Poor Geddy.

I agree that he had good nights and bad nights during the tour but Toronto wasn't as bad as some of them.

What ones were worse, in your opinion? He sounded TERRIBLE in Toronto, IMO.

Another gig where he wasn't really so good was the final show at the LA Forum. It was the last night, and it SHOWED.

I think that Time Machine Cleveland was pretty bad. Also, Clockwork in Hamilton, Ontario. I remember hearing one show from (I think) the Power Windows tour where he sounded awful.

R40 Kansas City he was ON FIRE. Sure, maybe he can't hit all those notes in Lakeside Park, but he hit many more than he did on the official DVD release. Camera Eye was amazing (it's the version on R40 Live)

I'd say his best R40 shows were New Orleans (5/22), Greensboro (5/28) and Denver (7/11) All three had him in top form!

As for the Power Windows tour, I think you're actually talking about the Grace Under Pressure Tour show on 9/27. There he was really struggling!

In my opinion, he was sounded worse the first Toronto night and they made a lot of mistakes that night too including Geddy messing up the intro to Subdivisions.

Reading about what he said happened, I know it's too late now, but I wondered if it might have helped him a lot if they had just canceled the rest of the tour until a later date in order to give him more time to heal. I think going right back out to do Europe might have done irreparable damage. The infection he had sounded very bad from the way he described it.

It does make you wonder. Strep is a nasty bug. It just seems like his voice wasn't the same afterwards.

I didn't really notice much of a big shift in 2011. Sounded pretty consistent with before. His voice turned into it's present state around 2007-2008 or so, IMO.

There was a huge difference during the Time Machine tour. He sounded pretty good on the first half but after that the yodeling really got bad.

I'd have to listen to all of them again. The only one I've listened to a lot is Tulsa, and I think he sounded well that night

What do you base on how well he sounded? Aside from your ears?

How well he sounds. If he sings the songs cleanly, with good tone, and minimal yodeling, that's good. If he has bad tone, doesn't sing cleanly, and yodels his way through the songs, that's bad.

I'll listen to them again later this week and let you know.

Geddy always sounds unique compared to other singers no matter what decade. The "yodelling" gives a lot more emotion in his voice, especially during tunes like Red Sector A.

The only time he ever sounds bad is when he's sick, like during the Time Machine Cleveland show where his nasal passages clearly sounded plugged up.
