toymaker
Has this been done? What hasn't? I'm thinking of Tears and Different Strings in particular. Rush isn't known for "love songs" really (just a bit of cliched slap n' tickle stuff on the first record, maybe, and you could look at Panacea and a few of the later songs). Do they compare well with other bands' romantic ballads? I know Lucas has an interesting theory about Different Strings...

toymaker
Entre Nous, a personal favorite of mine. Entre Nous is a great tune. Is it a "romantic" tune, or just another Peart statement on people's fundamental isolation from each other? Maybe Different Strings is really about that, as well. I forgot to mention Madrigal. That's more a romantic tune.

Lucas
Panacea is, I feel, is very much about love - actually, a person's first love Here's a meaning for my life A shelter from the storm Pacify my troubles with Her body, soft and warm Naked in our unity A smile for every tear Gentle hands that promise me Comfort through the years Yet I know I must be gone Before the light of dawn Panacea, passion pure I can't resist your gentle lure My heart will lie beside you And my wandering body grieves I find these passages very sad - the traveler has found what he feels is love, but he cannot stay - he must go forward .. Of interest also because of Neil's real-life need to travel - away from his family - almost as if he is unfulfilled by love ( the love of one partner ) . . grasbo
Cold Fire is another song about love and relationships. I think it's horribly underrated.I remember hearing the lyrics for the first time and going'what, their first real love song!'I like it a lot but Alex's solo is a bit fiddly and goes nowhere.Perhaps he fiddles about a lot in the bedroom. toymaker
Moving Pictures seems to have no love songs - more songs about isolation, really. Seems when Rush entered the 80s there wasn't much about romance any more. I do maintain, though, that Chemistry has some cool lyrics about what brings people together - elemental empathy.
presto123
Halo Effect definitely falls into this category. I know lots of people love it, but it sounds like a SnA leftover to me. I don't hate it. but I don't love it either. One of my least favs on a very strong CA record.

YYZumbi
I have heard somewhere to be honest that Red Barchetta is a love song, and that the barchetta is just another word for sex. I think Neil is talking about it on the Exit.. Stage Left video.

I think Neil is talking about it on the Exit.. Stage Left video.Well, that's not exactly what he said. I just watched it...Peart says, "...it's a metaphor for sexuality and freedom." I can't say that what Peart says equates to Red Barchetta being (as you said) "another word for sex" Edited April 26, 2016 by JohnnyBlaze
