My Hobby....Models!

Howdy, and here is where I figgerd I'd put this....my Fave hobby since the mid '60s is Model building. Started out with stuff my Dad made with me....A 1/72 scale B-24 D bomber from WW II, a FORD Tri-motor airliner from the '30s, and the Latest HOT car from then, the FORD GT-40 race car. Completed this last one with a neighbor from across the street. Dad bought me a few PYRO brand cars in 1/32 scale, and I had him buy me an AIRFIX Hawker Hurricane Mk.I that had SUCH HORRIBLE PRINTING on the cover, I thought that the 'camoflage' was Apple Green and Copper! I decided to recreate this in a model this year, and here it is....

Notice I haven't painted the yellow tips on the propeller, or used masking tape to refine the cockpit canopy lines. I now do this on every model. The other models mentioned before are long gone, although they are still available to purchase... A lot of them are now replaced by larger models, in my once fave 1/48 scale, like the plane above.

'In Process' is what I call 'em until all is done, and some have 'slipped by' even then!

This is an 'In Process' Bitish Lancaster Mk. I bomber just to show some cockpit detail

I'm at this point in my second model of this plane...too many small parts that got broke, so had to re-do it.

Looks like a labour of love. The cockpit area looks incredibly detailed. I presume you had to add the paint to the dials?

I remember doing airfix kits when I was a lad, but one of my friends was much more skilled at building and adding the paint than I was, which put me off a bit.

I built planes and some cars for years as a kid. A combination of extracurricular activities and trying to be cool means I stopped somewhere around 15 and have never built one since. I would like to get back into it at some point. I preferred wwii era planes although I had some jets and even some sci-fi ships like colonial vipers.

I love building scale models! I have several in partial stages of completion and still new in the box. My favorite type are WWII planes with Sci Fi space ships leading the pack. Jets, ships and cars round out 2nd place. I just don't have the time to fiddle with them at this point in my life. I do have a couple of RC Helicopters and a starter-quad copter (drone) that I have been learning to fly which is great fun. I also do have life size toys that keep me occupied if I have spare time, like my 19' boat & my almost antique truck and car(s)

As a kid I made some planes, a tank, and a Cylon fighter. With my son I've done some model train sets. I was thinking about getting into rocketeering with him.

I try to avoid painting the dials on the instrument panels...most companies now supply either, Photo-etched panels, or decals to apply to a plastic IP.

My main interest is WW II aircraft as well. I do cars, tanks, boats also. Star Trek ships, Jets and WW I aircraft as well...Monsters sometimes also!

Great stuff OldRushFan !!

This is something I'd love to get back into, as building these models and train sets were a huge enjoyable part of growing up ..

Do like I did! This is my 'Retirement Plan'! some of these models are no longer available they're so old!

Very nice. :D

Are you familiar with AMT, Dragon, Eduard, Encore E Models, Fine Molds, Hasegawa, Heller, Italieri, Monogram, etc? :)

OH YES!!! I have found most 'over-sea' company's have better molds and such, photo-etching and resin parts are becoming 'ordinary' these days. Tamiya is one of my favorite companies....much better detail and fit.

Just watched that two days ago!

I'm the same way! 'In process' models are around also! You need to do like I did, make them your "Retirement Plan" ! I like the feeling of accomplishment I get when they're finished!

More coming....

yep! We had a section on rocketry in 7th grade, and i made two Estes models, I believe one was called WAC Corporal, and the other was a Skyhook or Mark. The second one flew, but I painted the WAC with fluorescent poster paints, and my teacher didn't want that one to be attempted! Gosh that poster paint was HEAVY when applied! The other flew fine.....recovered well also.....

Very nice, ORF! Reminds me of the models my dad used to build before his eyesight started going, although he still has them in his office.

Yeah, my Dad wasn't into them after the '60s until he'd retired in the mid '80s, but to my knowledge, he only bought a model of a '36 Ford coupe, Which I'M finishing! It was an AMT issue from the late '80s, Though the mold had been around since the '60s...I have a set of Magnifying headware that I use for close up work....Thinking of taking my Bro and Sis's advice and having my eyes done with LASIK thingies...

Old Rush Fan....what a fantastic hobby you have. Takes patience i bet. Is your dad still around i wonder ? Thanks for sharing. :D

Thanks, I think so! My Dad passed on in 2004...Oct. 21... and Your welcome, I LOVE THIS S***T! LOL

I actually do collect fungus. Here's me and my kid Jake making it happen:

Where are the girls? :16ton:

Ya mean the posing models? This ain't no CAR SHOW DUDE! LOL

Although there ARE places you can buy that stuff if you wanna build a diorama.... LOL

Humbrol makes a great paint, but I like Model Master pigments by Testor's. Testor's make a 'Desert Pink' as it was called by American airmen in WW II, usually used in The Desert War in N. Africa, and Testor's regular line has Light Tan, which is a VERY CLOSE 'Match' to that color, and what I'm using for any U.S. aircraft in that theater. Working on a B-24 D, an exact copy of the one at the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio. To be seen later in this thread. I only have had three photo-etched models so far, one not even started yet. Italieri are two of them, Hawker Hurricane Mk 1, and A Me 262 B 1 night fighter jet, and the P-39 Q, shown earlier in the pix had photo-etched parts, My VERY FIRST experience with them, but I handled it very well, I think....and they were made by eduard... I like their models also! Masks are provided for canopy painting...etc. but even applying the masks can be daunting! I've bought some 'washes' but never used them as yet....still learning and growing in this craft! LOL The local Hobby store had a few of my 1/72 aircraft on display for a few years, until the Ann Arbor store closed....I took a Detailing class from a guy that used to build 'FROM SCRATCH' models of Ships of the Line for Michigan shipping companies....wow was HE good! I've got a German Tank, mk IV Panzer that i've used his techniques on...building the engine from scratch and hinging hatches and such.....I could still 'hinge' the car type doors on that 'P-39 Q' I suppose....

I love building scale models. Haven't done it in years because honestly I feel a little stupid doing it. I'm too worried that people will think I'm weird, and as I'm reading this I realize how stupid it sounds!

I shouldn't worry. Nerding is the new black.

Agree.

I never liked building models but I always liked looking at them. Cars, ships, buildings, etc. All that care and precision needed is respectable.

Love the workshop. A person has to have 'their' space.

Inspired by your passion and crackin' photos, I went looking for some models at the weekend. Found them, but they aren't so cheap and then there is the paint. The other factor preventing purchase was all the kids - not buying models, just shite with their Christmas money.
