I was sure someone on the East Coast would have started a thread of this magnitude by now but nope! So here it is! I'm not to to say much tonight. I'm burnt out and watching "A New Hope."

I was a real cynic after seeing the final 2 minute trailer at half time on MNF but alas tonight my mind was fuckking blown into outer space.

I'm not going to "spoil" anything I'm just so happy that JJ did this film with complete justice. I would give this movie a 10/10.

Seriously.

The acting, the script, the one liners. PERFECT.

It's a masterpiece.

I can't wait to see it 1138 more times!

I feel like a little kid again!

I've been very lucky to have seen all 7 films in theaters when they first came out.

This movie moved me.

To me this new chapter in the Star Wars Saga reminded me of Episode IV. "A NEW HOPE 2.0"

May The Force Be With You All!

I CAN'T WAIT FOR EPISODE VIII!

I thought it was rollicking good fun. It does play the nostalgia card a little too much and essentially rehashes the Episode 4 plot almost point for point. But it's Star Wars, what could we possibly expect.

Kylo Ren...I KNEW he was going to be one of the main character's child, he just had to be (Oedipal Wars anyone??). Vey cool bad guy, a petulant Vader wanna be that is actually tempted by the light side of the force which is an interesting twist. I think it would have been more enigmatic and a more powerful reveal to have him remove his mask only when confronting Solo. But he's gonna be a fun psychotic baddie for a while.

The new characters are good and the film had a nice brisk pace. I loved the practical effects and that the movie didn't look anything like the previous 3 suckfests.

I think this is a good way to reboot the story and set up the franchise going forward. I'm hopeful that as the other films arrive this one will make more sense as the needed, if predictable, springboard to the future. I don't think I'll watch this one over and over like the original but I enjoyed it a lot.

I'll post my unbiased thoughts after I see it online this weekend.

I have no attachment to the 1st 6 films. Some are good most are average.

Of course if you went to see it on day 1 you'll love it....you are a fan

1) Ancient Ways saw it on the first day and didn't like it.

2) I'm not THAT big of a fan. I went today because I won't have time in the next few weeks. And in THESE parts movies are removed from cinemas pretty quickly. After 2 weeks the number of showings are drastically reduced. After a month it's almost guaranteed to be gone.

3) I didn't like any of the prequels. Loathed Phantom, disliked Clones, and didn't care about Revenge. Of the originals, I liked Star Wars, loved Empire, and liked Return.

(Spoiler-free talk): We loved it Lots to digest, so a second viewing very soon.

Definitely agree with the "word on the street" that it's a return to the old sense of humor, which was fresh and welcomed. Truly had a natural sense of levity and ease in its humor. It's not a flawless movie by any stretch -- some of the plot points and the relative ease of getting from A-to-B are a bit irksome at times -- but its heart is definitely in the right place, and the performances and overall feel just can't be beat. In the end those things were never deal-killers, although I hope going forward the other films strive to go into more unique places, now that they've successfully lassoed our souls once again. This was certainly a film designed to make you re-fall in love with Star Wars by pushing the old (big, bright, and lovely) buttons, although occasionally at the cost of something truly new. (I was tickled to see the old school targeting screens on the Falcon, Tie-Fighters, and X-Wings) But then again it was intentionally designed as such and on that level was a rousing success. It was also a really fun film to watch. Never felt dour or overlong. If anything it might suffer a bit from cramming so much into two-and-a-quarter hours.

I really like the new young cast (especially Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver) and that was pretty critical going forward. Ford and Mayhew, especially, turned in FINE performances in their old roles. You think you choked up during the "Chewie, we're home scene" in the trailers. You'll do that more than a few times here. I was very impressed by Harrison who has been sleep-walking through roles for some years now. I really and truly felt Han Solo was on the screen the whole time, another critical element. The new droid was super cute without being annoying, so if you fear he's the new Jar Jar you're completely mistaken. There is no element like that in the film, nor some goofy puffy hand scene like in the first Abrams Star Trek film.

I wasn't too blown away by the score on first listen, but, to be fair, I think I was just juggling too much to pay a lot of attention to it. However, the film did seem to lack a discernible and memorable NEW theme, something the prequels never lacked. Nothing coming close to Duel of the Fates (Menace), Across The Stars (Clones), or Battle Of Heroes (Sith). But the music under the scenes seemed to work just fine. Soundtrack arrives in the post today..!

If you've MISSED that original flavor of Star Wars, this film has that...and I suspect you'll be quite pleased and more than a bit relieved. It's not perfect, but it was the film the franchise needed to win back the disaffected. Had the prequels been better received and remembered, the new film wouldn't have carried this burden. I think that's important to remember.

I was pretty pleased with the movie. Waaaaay better than the prequels, but still a bit behind the original trilogy. I wasnt expecting it to be as good as the original trilogy, so I was pleased. I will definitely go see it again within the next week.

I thought the characters were very good, especially Fin and Rey. I think Kylo Ren is interesting, they kinda channeled a angsty, reclusived school shooter type guy vibe to him.

As far as cons go, the pacing of the movie is not as good as the original....I guess that is subjective, but its just how I feel. It could use a lot more plot development and back stories, lots of action scenes were longer than necessary...I would have preferred to hear more about the Third Order, the Resistance, why Kylo Ren became bad...in general, what is the state of the Galaxy?

Overall, I did like it, and was pleased

I generally agree. While I need to digest this one more, I think I'll be putting it above Return and below A New Hope in my rankings.

Almost as good as Episodes IV and V, slightly better than VI (the Ewoks brought that film down an notch), and FAR better than all the prequels. Very excited to see the next one!

Don't forget this is a trilogy and a lot of those questions will probably be answered in the next two. They had to spend time developing the new characters first. Adding all that other stuff in would have been too much for one movie. It's better like that since it will allow things to breathe a little bit more instead of being slammed over the head with everything at once.

THIS IS THE SPOILER THREAD RIGHT? I DON'T WANT ANYONE GETTING MAD AT WHAT I TALK ABOUT NEXT.

There were a few things I didn't like. I don't think Kylo should have took off his helmet before his scene with Han. Also, I found it strange that Chewie and Leia didn't interact with each other after what happened. Instead Leia embraces Rey right away, a person she barely even knows.

Or does Leia know her more than we think? Rey is really strong with the force, perhaps she is Luke's long lost daughter? There is more to her than we know so far. Luke's old lightsaber didn't call out to her just because she's strong with the force. There's gotta be a blood bond there.

The mystery of Rey's childhood and how she ended up on Jaaku is a major teaser. I bet that nearly every fan (including me) shares your suspicions. :haz:

If they hadn't waited to unmask Kylo until Han confronts him, it would've been like: "That's it?! That's the big reveal?! Adam Driver?!" It was good the way it was done because, though it may be a big reveal whose son he is, his FACE isn't a big reveal. Besides, Han (and most characters) already knew what his son Kylo looked like so it wouldn't have made much sense for him to gasp when unmasked.

Yeah, seems Rey is Luke's kid...which makes me believe she isn't. Just seems too easy a puzzle. Rey vs her angsty Darth cousin? Could be. Even probably. But again, seems too easy.

I like all these new, young characters. Finn grounds this movie like Han did in the first one. No, I'm not saying he's as good as Ford or anything like that. But he seems like he provides that sense of cowboy with humor.

Finn's role in this story is a mystery. Does he have Force potential, or is he just the new version of Solo? We know that even though he was born and bred to be a killer, his innner character is Good. That's similar to Solo's smuggler-killer with a heart of gold. Regardless, Finn is an excellent character. He shows great fear, but shows courage when he needs it the most.

Knowing Ren's face and identity is a good departure from the original films. This film revisited several themes and events from the first trilogy, but it also changed some things.

In the first trilogy, Darth Vader wasn't a real man until the very end of Return Of The Jedi. Only then did we see him as a flawed, tortured soul. Only then did we feel any compassion for him. In The Force Awakens, however, we already see Kylo Ren as a very tortured soul, suffering the inner conflict between the Dark and the Light. Even better, we don't know if he will continue down the Dark path or turn back to the Light.

Ok. Here goes:

Main issue: it's basically a remake of original movie episode iv. Young person living on desert planet encounters droid carrying secret information needed to help rebellion/resistance. Young person leaves planet and meets Chewie and Han. Young person begins to learn of force. Bad guys have a big weapon capable of destroying planets. It actually destroys planets. Good guys learn about a way to destroy weapon (this time from former Stormtrooper, not bothans). There is a bad guy. He is actually not main bad guy but is being manipulated by other weird bad guy. Main bad guy probably still has good in him. Good guy trusts in his ability to help and pays with life. Good guys destroy weapon (this part mixed in retread stuff from ROTJ) that can destroy planets but there is still much danger. I couldn't believe what I was watching while it was happening. And artoo. They're selling us artoo just got sad and turned himself off because Luke left. Wow. Also: Star Wars can't have bad guys that are just bad. Kylo Ren is just as whiny as Anakin Skywalker but his family thinks there is good in him even though he is a murderer. I was never a fan of Anakin Skywalker got redeemed by killing Sidious. He murdered thousands and, with tarkin, millions and possibly billions on alderaan.

Things I liked: a return to giving us general information and allowing us to fill in blanks like: Luke made a school to restart the Jedi but kylo Ren destroyed it all. That's enough. Reminds me of Leia mentioning General Kenobi and the clone wars in epi iv. Lucas would have insisted on shouting an entire movie just about the Jedi school because toys. A return to less cgi. I liked the casting. Rey, Finn, and po all seem like great casting. I'm hoping for a lot with the next movie with no Abrams involvement.

Another thing I didn't like that I forgot about: kylo Ren is set up as a dangerous dark side user that can stop blaster shots in mid air. He has a difficult time defeating 2 people who have no light saber experience in hand to hand combat.

Well, since the force is everywhere and in all of us and all that, then yeah Finn has potential with it. And he's all those things you said here too. Most important, the actor (whoever he is) does a good job. All the actors in this AT LEAST do okay but many do very well (I'm thinking Rey & Finn specifically).

Oh, I hope in the next flick they don't pull some shit out of their ass and say that Finn is Lando Calrissian's son or nephew or (god please no) clone. It'd be awful like in the last Star Trek film when Benedict Cumberbatch revealed, "I am Khan." f**k you, no you're not. You're Benedict Cumberbatch!

Now that I've seen this, Star Wars movies are 4-3. Star Trek stands at 4-8.

Stopping blaster shots is regular force stuff. It's not really that special of an ability.

Kylo had trouble against Fin and Rey because he was injured from the blaster shot. Also, with no other Jedi around, he probably has little to no experience dueling against someone else with a lightsaber. He's used to going up against people who crumble and have no defenses against his powers. Now he goes up against two people who are force sensitive (they didn't say that about Fin but I believe he is) and have somewhat equal power to fight back, he doesn't know what to do. Don't forget that Snoke said that Kylo needs to finish his training. So, he obviously isn't all the way there yet when it comes to battling against foes who can challenge him. Makes perfect sense that he had a hard time fighting against Fin and Rey.

He was trained with Luke so should know how to handle a saber. Force sensitive wasn't enough for Luke to even levitate anything without a ton of practice with Yoda on dagobah after working with kenobi for a brief period. Force sensitivity is nice but there is actual skills needed to use a saber and I didn't get the impression his injury was that bad. As far as "completing his training" who knows what that means. Yoda said Luke needed to complete his training and thN said never mind you're done. I never saw anyone in the other 6 movies freeze a blaster shot in mid air and leave it there, do some other stuff, and then allow the shot to reach its target. If you did let me know. All I saw was Vader absorbing blaster shots.

Which are your 4 for SW? I think I prefer episode 3 to episode 7 personally so I am curious.
