It was my first "new" Rush album, the first one I had and heard on the day of release. I tried to like it but never succeeded. I think it's a mis-step, perhaps a useful learning experience for the band but a failed experiment.

The fabulous Hemispheres was the worthy successor to the magnificent 2112 for me, and I prefer to imagine that AFTK never happened. It just doesn't work, doesn't gel.

Xanadu, Closer to the Heart, and Cygnus X-1 are all brilliant. The rest is okay to kind of bad in the case of Cinderella Man.

Personally, I love the whole album. But Cinderella Man does seem to get a lot of shit. I loved that song from first listen, I never really understood why so many don't care for it

Musically it's alright, but lyrically it's pretty awful in my opinion.

My problem with it is that it lacks any subtlety. It's just "a good guy went to a place with bad guys and was good, the bad guys didn't like it, but the good guy was good anyway". Just my thoughts.

Now 2112 and Hemispheres....there's some subtlety ;)

Good grief you are my evil twin. We had exactly the same experience sort of. I waited for weeks for this album my first new release to come out and of course bought it the first day it hit the store. Where we differ it is still my favorite studio recording all time. Amazing that we can be that diametrically opposed on this one but oh well. Brilliant album this one.... :codger:

Cinderella Man is a great song as is the title track and the rest speaks for itself. This post not aimed at you Eagle but the posts above yours... :)

If you like it that's obviously fine, I just think the lyrics are a bit painful to listen too. Just my thoughts. :)

Yeah, Test for Echo has some bad lyrics, but I personally find Cinderella Man's to be even worse.

Fair enough. It is a top 20-25 all time song for me by them but so too is the title track. If we all agreed this wouldn't be any fun at all... :codger:

I always loved the lyrics to Cinderella man. In fact, I really love all of Rush's lyrics up until Red Lenses. That was the first sign of things going downhill lyrically for me, but I really think Neil totally rebounded on CA.

EDIT: from 2112 to Red Lenses I should say. They could be a little silly or average before then too.

But Geddy wrote the lyrics to Cinderella Man.

Because of the lacking subtlety, right? Virtuality and Dog Years just scream "subtle!!!!!"

Eh, I just think Cinderella Man's lyrics are pretty juvenile. I would agree that Dog Years and Virtuality have some bad lyrics too, but I personally like their music enough to deal with the bad lyrics.

Honestly, I actually quite like the lyrics to both Virtuality and Dog Years!
