Where's Neil on R40?

Just finished watching the bluray this evening. Sounded just fine in my opinion and met my expectations.

However I was really surprised at the lack of Neil footage. There were MANY moments of classic Neil fills that I expected close ups of, which were not caught on camera. Either the camera panned back to Ged or Alex, or did just another of numerous crowd shots. It reminded me of ESL which also had a distinct lack of Neil footage, which was frustrating as a kid for me because I'm such a fan of his, but is acceptable for the time of filming. Now with all of the limitless technology available, it seems like either poor planning or poor editing.

Anyone agree??

i hate that shit. It's the story of my life being a Neil Influenced Lover. That's right. NIL

I have been pissed off since "Exit Stage Left" came out on VHS. They cut the solo out and Neil talked over it. Killed me.

GUP Live. Are you serious? Excellent footage of Neil but there the fukk was the solo with YYZ And RED LENSES??

Then really "A Show Of Hands? They butchered Neil's solo. "The Rhythm Method??" Really? Was that the edited VIRGIN VERSION?

So lame.

It's always been that way to my eyes.

They always cut Neil out of many fantastic fills.

Life goes on.

To be honest I hate the R40 photo cover.

It's so staged and so fake.

Neil looks like the fuckking HOBBIT.

I don't get it.

It's so sad.

Oh well, life goes on.

We are blessed to still have them around even though they are retired.

Neil always gets the short end of the stick.

Get it?

Of course you do.

NEIL RULES!

Yeah, the "Exit..." solo that was chopped and given the Neil voiceover pissed me off as a 9 year old Rush fan watching it late Saturday night on MTV back in the early 80s. I remember when my 4th grade buddy (also a Rush fan and STILL one) and I watched it, we were so disappointed by the cut solo & voiceover. But at the same time we thought, "He just sounds cool"...despite not really knowing what he was talking about then.

Looking back, I assume it was cut so that it'd fit in a one hour time slot on tv. And I assume they assumed mainstream audiences couldn't handle a full-on, lengthy Peart solo.

Watch Snakes And Arrows live for the best camera work overall of each member of the band.

Watch R30 for the very best live video of Neil's solo (and best drum solo IMO other than the classic ESL drum solo which can only be heard on YYZ).

Todem, yes I was going to add that bit about S&A live and R30. Awesome camera work and footage of Neil on both. That's why it's baffling that they've gone backwards IMO

If you want all Neil, all the time, check out the DVD Taking Center Stage: A lifetime of live performance. Every single song from the time machine tour with the drum parts explained and demonstrated in painstaking detail and key fills shown in both real time and slow motion. Plus the entire TM live concert with only Neil's cameras--you can choose whichever camera angle you prefer including the overhead shot.

That's your Neil festival. Picked a good tour to film too. Can't really go wrong with any of Neil's DVDs....even Fire on Ice.
