Neil's Replacement

Believe me. I see both sides and can justify both. Back to my main point, it sucks that they want to continue but instead, they're stuck in purgatory. Neil may not owe the fans anything, but you'd think he'd care enough about those 2 guys to do it one more time....for them.

Weren't they called Rush long before they ever met Neil?

I would go see them play with another drummer and I wouldn't care what they called themselves. Rush, Rash, R 40 something. I wouldn't care. To old for sentimentality at this point and I don't begrudge Neil his retirement either. He has earned it and then some. I just want to be entertained or not PERIOD. Just make a decision at some point and get on with it "While we're young" (Rodney D). Just my take and probably not a popular one either... :codger:

Oh, I wouldn't have a problem with Geddy and Alex doing something together, including live performances. I'd take offense to them calling it Rush, but any musical output from these boys (as long as it isn't like Presto) I'll happily give a shot, especially if it's done live.

As if that period has nearly as much significance as FBN-present, or even the debut with Rutsey. I'd consider that an extremely dumb excuse to continue as "Rush" without Neil.

From what I've read, Neil was done after Clockwork Angels. I think he was asked by the guys to " do it more time...for them". He did care enough about them to do it again. I respect that. He has to be wondering....At what point is enough, enough? I think the physical demands are greater on Neil than on the other guys, and that has to be taken into account. I've also read lots of posts and comments online that Neil appeared to be struggling to catch his breath on many nights. I say the man deserves my thanks for making my life so much better, and that he's earned his wish to retire.

I respect your post and can't say I disagree. Is Neil still a smoker? Anyone know? With all that we know, I have a feeling there will be one more tour. Possibly shorter in length.

As for Neil's drumming? Well, he's been shortcutting that as well...

Settle down, that's a bit much.

It's a fair observation. Neil has been neutering his drum parts for years. It is consistently disappointing to me

No. Don't forget that they need a lyricist as well. Unless you want geddy to return to writing lyrics telling women what time it is and that he fancies some sex.

I assume Geddy wrote the lyrics for his My favourite headache album and they are not too bad.

Better than the lyrics Neil shoe horned into Geddys mouth on Clockwork Angels.

The other option would be for Alex, Geddy and Neil to record studio album(s) and have another drummer tour it.

Can't imagine Neil liking that either. At this point I think the trio is done. Neil has to be concerned about anything the other 2 want to do at the point and "mission creep."

It's like they said in that recent interview about his hands after the shows during this tour being covered with all the calluses and sores. That's got to be painful as heck.

Perhaps a better way to say it would be, "Cornelius' playing has seemed less interesting TO ME over the past few years". To me, his playing as recently as Clockwork Angels has been vibrant and exciting...and why it would be more of a shame if Rush doesn't make new music together.

Getting winded I understand. Back or neck pain I understand. I don't understand why callouses or sores on hands would be any worse this tour than any other since they started an evening with rush.

I'm not talking about Neil's recent studio works, nor am I saying Rush shouldn't make music together. But recent performances of Natural Science, A Passage to Bangkok, Jacob's Ladder, and Losing It (and I'm sure others) contain drum parts that at times are quite different from the original versions

Getting old is what has changed. For one thing when you get older your skin gets thinner and you lose muscle tone. This is the first time I've ever noticed while watching the Blu-ray of this last tour was how old Neil's arms look. He looks like he's lost quite a bit of muscle tone.

I was going to answer that one for you but I figured since we are both "older" you could handle it  . Seems pretty obvious to me anyway. Hell he is 6 years older than I am I believe and I can't imagine doing such a thing even with all the breaks in between... :codger: Edited by Narps

I can't imagine doing that at our age either. He's 63, so it's pretty amazing that he can go out and beat the crap out of the drums like he does for close to 3 hours a show.

8 years older than me then. Good grief I am in decent shape I can't fathom such a thing even if I had the ability 8 years from now especially. He has earned his retirement I think that is fair to say anyway... Edited by Narps

I'm nearly the same age or I wouldn't have posted what I did. Im not looking for an argument. Muscle tone doesn't affect the skin on hands. I can't speak to loose skin on hands either but I doubt it. As I originally said, I understand the ravages of old age which is why I would understand what is common. It's the reason Phil Collins took so much time off.

His skills are still outstanding in my opinion....I just think it's harder and harder for him to play at an elite level for hours at a time, over the length of a tour. Being a smoker must make it even more difficult I'm sure. Non of us are immune to the ravages of time. Father time is undefeated.

It's like they said in that recent interview about his hands after the shows during this tour being covered with all the calluses and sores. That's got to be painful as heck.

Getting winded I understand. Back or neck pain I understand. I don't understand why callouses or sores on hands would be any worse this tour than any other since they started an evening with rush.

I think their point was that it's a lot harder on him physically than it is on them during a show.

Then I assume it's always been that way. I just don't see what has changed.

Getting old is what has changed. For one thing when you get older your skin gets thinner and you lose muscle tone. This is the first time I've ever noticed while watching the Blu-ray of this last tour was how old Neil's arms look. He looks like he's lost quite a bit of muscle tone.

Just from my end of the conversation I didn't realize that there were that many running around the forum at least fairly regularly older than I am or much older anyway. You would understand better than I for sure then. Apologies I am just used to being the oldest dude or dudette in the conversation most of the time... :)

let me first say "IMHO"....

Is Neil done with Rush? I don't think so. Done with big tours, I say yes. But Neil still is playing very well for his age and he enjoys making music. He's a person that always has to keep busy and do something. I think he'll eventually get the itch again to write some material and want to record with the guys again. No idea when. 1,2,3 years? I just feel that Neil is the type or person that likes to prove he still has it and if he still has the phsyical ability to play drums and write music, he will.

It's possible to see maybe a 5-10 city tour or something. Like shows at some big cities. (toronto, LA, chicago, NY, etc). If it doesn't happen, I've already told myself I'm ok with it. These guys (mainly Neil) has more than earned the right to call it quits whenever they want to. But I really don't think we've seen the last of Neil musically.

Sorry, Narps... you ain't the only old dude here. 5 effing 3 for me. Anyway... anyone who thinks that Rush could or would continue without Neil doesn't know much about the band. There is no replacement for any of the boys. Simple as friggin that~!

Perfectly put.

Even more support for the idea of getting a young drummer and marching on. Let me reiterate my stance. I don't want them to be without Neil. I also don't want to see them call it quits if they want to continue. So, what are the options? Call it quits unwillingly? Find someone else to sit on the throne? Or somehow get Neil to continue after a break. My choice is the latter.

His skills are still outstanding in my opinion....I just think it's harder and harder for him to play at an elite level for hours at a time, over the length of a tour. Being a smoker must make it even more difficult I'm sure. Non of us are immune to the ravages of time. Father time is undefeated.

Neil is a gentleman. If Alex and Geddy want to do more work, Neil will never stand in the way.

Even if that means a different form of Rush. Even if that means alienating half your core audience.

I sense something, I'm not even sure Al and Ged know where they are headed.

Did everyone watch the new video of Ged and Al with Rolling Stone? This time they were more forthcoming with the truth about what's going on. Clearly, they want to record and tour. Clearly, Neil is resistant and possibly ready to retire. So, I dare ask the question and let the daggers fly.

Any chance they would continue with a new drummer? If they want to continue, why let one person sink the ship? You could see in the interview how frustrated Geddy is with Neil. Surely there's lots of banter behind the scenes, or complete radio silence.

I'll say this, they gave up their careers for Neil and waited 4 years for him to grieve, and that was the right thing to do. The least he could do in return would be to give them another record and a proper farewell tour. I'd venture to say he's selfish and doesn't care how they feel or what they want, or the fans.

Realistically, if they were to tour with a new drummer, it would not be under the Rush name. Ged and Alex both made it clear that despite Neil not being an original, without Neil there is no Rush.

However, As someone who is completely and thorougly annoyed with how Neil ended things, I without a doubt encourage Geddy and Alex to tour with a new drummer as a "tribute act" to Rush. Therefore for years to come we can still see 2/3s of Rush doing what they love doing. Let Neil enjoy his retirement in peace and let everyone else who wasn't fortunate enough to see them on R40 get their chance to see Geddy and Alex.
