fraroc
We all have our favorite tours, our favorite setlists for whatever reason....But what setlists just don't do it for you? In my honest opinion the setlists for the Presto, Roll The Bones, and Counterparts tours all suffered from the same issue. Cutting hits in favor of new songs. For the Presto tour, The Spirit Of Radio was literally cut from the setlist for first 24-25 dates of the tour. Yes I know, they put it back in the setlist not even a quarter into the tour, but it still bothers me. TSOR was their first REALLY big radio-friendly hit and that song in conjunction with Tom Sawyer immortalized Rush in the mainstream music industry. Roll The Bones tour completely cut Subdivisions out of the setlist towards the end of the tour and Counterparts and the second leg of the Test For Echo tour had no Subdivisions AT ALL. Now I know, Subdivisions is a hit but not a Tom Sawyer hit, but they really should have found a way to keep it in. Vapor Trails, R30, S&A, Time Machine, CA, and R40 really fixed this problem by keeping the main hits (Tom Sawyer, The Spirit of Radio, Subdivisions), save for a few like Limelight and CTTH, but we can't win it all. Bigbobby10
The problem with the least favorite is that i can just go with their first tour in 1974, because they haven't really released anything except for their debut album and some songs from Fly By Night
Union 5-3992
I'd literally see them for any of their known setlists. I'd like enough of each set for it to be worth it.

laughedatbytime
Of the ones I know about, the S&A tour has to be the worst...all that shit from S&A could test Zumbi's fandom.

fraroc
I feel like the worst setlists for casual, non die-hard Rush fans were the S&A and CA tours. For both those tours, it seemed that every other song was a new song which only die hards care about, the casuals could give a soaring rats ass. Or a deep cut, which again, only the die hards know and care about.

There are people that would go and then act like they weren't expecting songs from the album
toymaker
I know that a tour is usually done in support of a new record, but I have to agree that four songs tops from the new record should be the maximum. When you have as many records as Rush, there's a lot to cover.
Anthemic
disagree completely that only 4 new songs should be played at a gig! if a band is fired up over their new material they should play as much of it as they want. i'd rather hear new songs played with excitement than the same old songs played by the motions.
toymaker
I thought the Vapor Trails tour setlist was great, and I don't recall there being more than about 4 tunes from the new record. I might be remembering wrong. I think Snakes had about 9 or 10 - seemed like almost the whole album. What does the band usually do? About 50% new album tunes? Edit: looks like they did most of Kings when it was new, all of Hemispheres (at least for some shows), four tunes from Waves, six from Pictures, seven from Signals . . . hmm, I guess they do focus on most of the new album. Digital Dad
I think VT was recorded pretty piecemeal so when it came time to run the songs for rehearsal they found they couldn't play them live. The last two seem like they happened more organically.
edhunter
Time Machine was utterly horrible. I flew from Utah to Chicago to see it with a buddy and his friend, who was there to officially review the show for an independent Chicago newspaper. He asked for a quote he could use and I told him I was extremely disappointed, and that they mailed it in. Bad selections from the Counterparts album, too many Snakes and Arrows songs, the lousy encores and those stupid movies. He went ahead and published it. I still have all the photos he took from right in front of the stage. I eventually had some autographed.

Union 5-3992
I dont even understand the outrage over 3 SA songs on the time machine tour or the 3 CA songs on R40. They always play 3 of their newest songs on tours following a release. God forbid they be proud of their work

toymaker
I guess you're right about the new stuff. They have every right to be excited about the stuff they've just done. I guess for me, after the initial excitement about new material wears off, sometimes it takes quite a while for the newer songs to reach the same level of meaningfulness that the older stuff has. However, I think they usually do a good job trying to satisfy a) themselves and those fans who want to support them in the new material b) the fans who want the "big hits" and c) the fans who hope for deep cuts and older stuff.
