Geddy on Dan Patrick: "people can change their minds, but..."

No, this should have been a unanimous decision from the start.

Geddy, Alex and Neil will continue the band or end the band in any way THEY choose. It's not up to you or anyone else.

There is only one way for the band to end, and it's THEIR way. Grow up and accept it.

It would help if all of the speculation would just stop.

The only thing we know for sure and certain is that Neil is through. So it is said. And that neither Geddy nor Alex will say for certain what the future holds, which is very wise - never say never. But, for now, there won't be any more tours, and no new Rush music is in the plans in the foreseeable future.

Anything more than the above is just dreaming and projecting your own desires and hopes on them.

I was saying this months ago when the tour was first starting and the speculation was at a high. People just don't get it. Neil has been particularly savaged. I do hope they keep going. But...only to my own selfish desires. If Neil says he's done. He's done. And that's ok. Don't make it what it isn't.

I think you are exaggerating the "Neil has been particularly savaged" part. Do you understand why he is resented? If it wasn't for him, they'd probably be out touring right now. It's Neil who is the real reason for the seemingly end of Rush.

It's understandable, rightly or wrongly, that fans would resent him for putting an end to their dream.

It's understandable that SELFISH fans resent Neil for retiring after 40 years of outstanding work. Those selfish fans are completely in the wrong.

When any one of us retires after 40 years, not one criticism is made. Rock stars don't receive such respect. They're expected to perform forever. Shame on us fans for being so selfish.

This has nothing to do with fans being selfish. Go ask Ged where the three of them would be without the fans...

Neil's past couple of decades has been strongly influenced by abrupt unfair endings, so he is not getting that fans are seeing his desire for a 2015 Rush ending as abrupt.

3 mos notice, for those that would have liked to experience the end deadhead style (or catch as many shows as possible) and tour with them to the end, is abrupt, considering fans work, family and vacation schedules are already set within a three month window. And they explicitly said last tour of this magnitude, not last live performances ever...

He of course has the right to be abrupt, its just a terrible shame for a band that championed itself publicly as a "fans band" over and over again. Its obvious most of the "Rush Organization" sees it this way.

Of course it's Neil's right to be abrupt, as it would be for G and A to continue on as FOUNDING members without Neil as life is for those that want to live on, although I hope they would do it with a new name. And play lots of the debut and FBN pre NEP material.

There is no way I would go along with it if they still called themselves Rush. Another name, then I would be up for it.

Neil, Geddy and Alex have every right to call it quits at any time. Any member of any band has the same right. It doesn't matter one bit if the "end" is abrupt, sudden, or planned over many years. It's irrelevant.

Neil Peart's past family tragedy was EIGHTEEN YEARS AGO. That, too, is irrelevant. They've played for 40 years; that is all the reason they need to call it quits. It's always a shame FOR US FANS when a popular rock band retires. It's not a shame for the band.

Some fans are seeing Neil's desire to quit touring as abrupt. They're WRONG.

Doesn't seem like he is saying anything that he hasn't already said before though. No real surprises there.

Cool interview though. And did he say "God bless you" at the end to those guys? Just wondering...

I didn't hear it. I would have to go back and listen....

So do I...I am at work and can't have the volume as loud as I'd like for obvious reasons, but it sounded like that's what he said.

It's a thing people say. I don't think I'd read anything into it.

I'm not... :)

No, not either, just wondered. It just kind of struck my ear as odd for a second there.

Geddy said, "Thanks guys, it's been a pleasure to be here." No God. Didn't hear it the first, second or third time I listened to the end.

Ok, then that makes sense....my ears must be playing tricks on me or something.

Is it your ears playing tricks on you or could it be....

I hope we discuss the band's future to the point of nausea which causes me not to care anymore.

I'm already at that point in time.... I almost wish they'd just come out and say "WE ARE DONE!" (and the "box set" with the demo's, out-takes, alternative mixes and live odds and ends will be released in 2016)

I wish they had done that too. I hate all the Neil bashing that is going on on this forum. I love their music and I've always loved his lyrics and to drag everything down in the dirt now is such a shame.

Can we please have this?? Damn. Aparently they only kept the master tapes which is totally f***ing near sighted. There has to be, has to be some rehearsal tapes where they jam out musical ideas to Sir Gawain before they shelved it.

Done? Goodness gracious. Why would you want that. Geddy and Alex have hinted at working on a new Rush album next year. Alex has brought up ideas in the press, most notably, a residency somewhere, and this quote from Geddy was in Rolling Stone yesterday when they had a short article accompanying TSOR clip release:

"It's most likely our last tour," Lee said. "I can't say for sure. But it doesn't mean we don't want to work together still, it doesn't mean we won't do another creative project, and I've got ideas for shows we could do that don't involve a tour."

RUSH is not dead. It's just internet users trying to convince everyone. There may be some hard feelings in the band about not extending R40, but it's not the first time there have been hard feelings about something and they always get past it. :D

Unfortunately, we all knew that this was going to happen.

There has always been the faction of Rush fans who have some "beef" with Neil, be it his political/religious views, his lyrics, his books, his at-times-not-so-nice comments and thoughts on people (which we all have)........his shyness and aversion to dealing with fans.....his dislike of long tours (which many, many performers share)......

We have all known that HE was going to get all the "blame" when the band decided to hang it up. The anti-Neil faction has been patiently waiting to strike......

This is the ugly side of rock & roll fanaticism. Fans want to control you, possess you, know every detail of your life, and then crucify you if you let them down.....

Knowing the recording process...engineers are known to run a 2 track during the sessions for a "just in case" (Stop...what did you just play...I don't know...ok, roll that 2 track back)...you can only imagine what's on there! (and according to my Recording III prof who worked for some "serious" people...they KEEP them!

Bands get to walk away with rough mixes, and they get "try this mix" tapes with several different versions of the same song... You know that someone somewhere HAS to have this stuff in a box! (not to mention the soundcheck tapes with "ideas" on them)

So don't let them kid you and say there's nothing "alternative" out there...ok, maybe they don't have "leftover songs" that weren't included, and maybe they incorporated all of their ideas into songs, but there has to be stuff to be heard...and yeah, us hardcores will pay for it!

Another way of looking at it is we should be glad that it is Neil who wants to retire, as he is the easiest one to replace.

I'm not trying to say he hasn't been a big part of what has gone on, but he isn't part of the songwriting "engine"

Take Geddy or Alex out of the equation however, and it is indeed finito......

How do you mean? I thougt it was obvious that Geddy and Neil where the engine of Rush. Alex was out of the equation on a couple of Rush songs, at the least. He just found a way to worm his way into them
