So in continuation of my previous threads, what's Rush's best album solely based on drums and other percussion?

EDIT: for once I can actually make up my mind. AFTK all the way. From the power and cool breakdown of the title cut, to ALL of XANADU, to the insanity of Cygnus X-1, this album has some of my favorite moments of Neil's drumming heroics, not to mention the warmth, crispness, and dynamic range of the drums all over this record, some things I've found Hemispheres lacking in to a significant extent. And of course Neil makes brilliant use of all of his extra percussion here, mainly in the three songs I mentioned, also better than Hems imo.

Another vote for Kings. Xanadu, Cygnus, and the title track (which I don't particularly care for) have insane drum work. CA, PoS—I mean, CoS—and PeW are all great drum albums as well.

Neil is always better live then studio so I vote for a live album. Say.... Exit... Stage Left

Interesting...I think the drum sound is much more 'alive' on All the World's a Stage, and Different Stages, disc 3...

Exit...Stage Left does have my favourite live version of YYZ on it, with Neil's solo splitting it, in the middle.

But as for the original question- there are several possible facets to it- technical ability, or the way the drum sound is produced, or the range of different percussion instruments Neil used...

My vote goes to Permanent Waves. There's something about the way the drum sound was captured on that record that just blows my mind. (And I'm a 30-year veteran drummer myself...but not professionally. Anyway)...

Kings and Moving Pictures are also fantastic. But Permanent Waves it is.

:laughing guy: :outtahere: ....

This has been a while and I must have voted for the Debut. In all seriousness I think ATWAS is my favorite drumming album ever but of course its my favorite album ever too so. I will just never forget when I was very young listening to this album over and over and being so amazed at the frantic drumming. I knew very little of course about them at the time (not the information age back then  ) but I always remember always thinking to myself "damn that dude must have been tired when that concert was over"... In my opinion, I have no idea how Neil was able to keep the drum beat during The Weapon, even with headphones on. The three of them were each going in different musical directions at the same time.

I am at a loss as to how to vote.

Presto-No joke. Neil never did anything that interesting ever again.

Nice to see some praising the brilliant drum work on Presto. Without a doubt, the most subtle Neil has ever been with his drumming. Very clever drumming throughout the whole album. Show Don't Tell, War Paint, and Available Light are FANTASTIC drum performances. Always had a soft spot for the sparse yet effective drumming in the title track also. Edited by Geddy's Soul Patch
