I bet a show like Tulsa barely saw any profit for them.

The band hasn't been reliant on ticket sales for decades.

They get a guarantee from the promoter.

Maybe you, or someone else here in the know, can explain that one to me.

I honestly have no idea of how any of this works. But one thing I have come to learn being here on TRF is that what I thought was a simple form of entertainment is actually quite a business and no different in many ways from how major corporations are run.

Exactly, and payroll people tell me it also gets complicated with taxation issues (state, country, etc) and other things you wouldn't even think of.

In today's touring world for a major act like Rush, it's actually fairly simple and the band is removed fairly early on:

1) Promoter (Live Nation) agrees on a price to pay to Rush (the organization) for an agreed upon number of shows.

2) Rush uses that money to pay salaries, production, trucks, fuel, per diem, travel, etc.

3) Promoter rents venues and pays for advertising, etc.

4) Promoter sets ticket prices and keeps the ticket sales.

It gets complicated if Rush gets a cut of ticket sales on top of the guarantee or has another arrangement of sorts, but that's the gist.

I can tell you with no degree of uncertainty that the numbers you see in the boxscore DO NOT include merchandise.

Merch is a completely separate entity and is handled by Showtech (RSBC people).

How can we get them to offer the Arf40 t-shirts for sale? I don't think there is one person on this forum who wouldn't buy one. In Zumbi's case, he would probably buy a dozen.

Email the RBSC folks and ask them to make them available for sale

And here all these decades i thought that whatever they made wherever they played went to a band. I had no idea there was a middle man.

There's a man out here my husband once met who lives in Sand Point, Idaho. He told my husband he had been a promoter in the NYC area and handled all the big names. My husband met him probably fifteen or more years ago. At that time, the word "promoter" only meant to me someone like a booking agent - his only job was to get the bands into the venues. I wish now I had remembered the man's name so I could check him out to see if he was telling the truth about how big of a promoter he had been before he walked away from it all to live in Sand Point.

Quite a few of us already did that. They say they can't do it. The shirts were custom made for Geddy's exclusive use. Furthermore, they told LABT that they (RBSC) had no connection with the band. There is a thread in this section LABT started all about trying to get the Arf40 shirts made available.

Showtech (RBSC) can reasonably say that they have no connection with the band... but those of us who know better, know better.

Yes, they're their own entity... but... what umbrella are they under?

Now if the ARF40 shirts are exclusive (like Neil's have been since S&A) that's another story altogether.

I would bet though that after the tour is officially over if there are enough 'squeaky wheels' we could see some reasonable facsimile surface from them.

ETA:

I feel the sudden need to clarify something here.

Yes. Showtech has clients other than RUSH.

However, my statement of "...what umbrella are they under?" is for the sole purpose of RBSC/RUSH tours.

ETA2:

I just read through the other (ARF40) thread. LABT didn't say that RBSC didn't have any connection with the band, they said they don't have any direct contact with the band.. which could very well be true. They certainly have direct contact with the art director(s) for the tour and I'm sure there is some back and forth comment wise with the band/Ray/Pegi/Andy etc.

From what I read, if all those emails are copy/pasted as is then they're just trying to say 'PISS OFF' very nicely. The shirts are for Ged.

That doesn't mean you can copy the design via CafePress or some other similar site.... then again, pesky copyright laws and such 0.o

I'm sure Geddy probably just had the shirts made for himself, just like most all the rest of the t shirts that he's worn on tour. This one has just turned out to be really popular. I remember everybody wanting the blah blah blah shirt he wore at one point.

You can't trust anyone who lives in north Idaho, they're like their own separate state of weirdos up there. Beautiful area though.

I can imagine the Philly show made a lot of money as we were packed in there like sardines. I'm 6 foot 225 lbs and had trouble fitting my ass in that seat. The guy next to me should have had to buy two tickets.

Rush

$1,340,006

13,476 /

Rush kicks Shania Twain's arse easily. Not bad for a band that has no hits. :D

New Kids on the Block are on the list too? WTF!!! They're still touring? Seriously?

You don't have to tell me. Weirdos abound out here. A more amoral bunch I've never encountered. I'm convinced that whoever wrote the lyrics to Back Stabbers lived here.

Travel more. The Northwest is one of the tamest cultures on the planet.

I believe Madison Square Garden was a sellout too. And several other venues. Numbers are not just up yet.

If you think about it, how many bands/artists (besides country shit) can sell out venues like that year-in-year out... everywhere around the US?

Of course U2, AC/DC, DMB, Springsteen, Stones, Van Halen, Fleetwood Mac and the other old farts... but besides them? Not so many. New bands and teen idols come and go... only these old guys are guaranteed draws.

2010 Rush ranked nicely among the top grossing acts (per gig)

That's where we come in! They have one of the most loyal fan bass around and they know it!

The Beach Boys died with Carl Wilson. I have little interest in watching Mike Love, that talentless royalty-stealing hack, gigging with a surf band with Bruce Johnston's animated corpse in tow for "legitimacy".

Back to attendance numbers... from what I heard, most shows sold out. Those that did not, were 95% capacity.

Montreal was packed to the ceiling.
