Geddy´s bass tech Skully McIntosh says " the neck is set very straight for an extremely low string height and fast action" Bass Player Magazine August 2012.....what do you think guys that means in terms of measurements??..... :geddy:

You need to set the action on your each of your basses depending on how you play and how low you like it. If you go too low all you're going to get is buzzing. If you go too high it will affect the intonation and be more difficult to play. It's a balancing act to get both things right, and that can vary a bit depending on your preferences.

I don't know. I think measuring action is kind of pointless since each bass needs to be set individually.

I bet Skully set up the Gibsons and P basses as close as he could get to the Fender Jazzes.....for Geddy´s ease of playing... I will keep on trying to find out this"extremely low action" means....

That's total garbage, Geddy chose the tone that he wanted, much of it was using 30-90 guage super light strings which gave it a lighter tone! Listen to other players using Wals and they have a massive range of tones including Red Hot Chilli Peppers Blood Sugar Sex Magic album that was recorded using a Wal MK 2! My own Wal bass has a massive bottom end thankyou!

I've heard those records. The bass is thin and rubbery from Power Windows through Roll the Bones. Started using the J again on Counterparts (because while touring with Primus on the RTB tour Les Claypool kept going on how the Moving Pictures bass tone was what Les had been trying to reproduce ever since). Claypool has been seen playing Js since then as well. HYF, Presto and RTB have little to no low end at all. Counterparts has guts.

I will also say of the myriad of basses Geddy is playing on this tour there is not a Wal in the bunch. All American classics except for the Hofner and Zematis.

Wal bass should have never been used by Geddy, IMO. Imagine how much better Hold Your Fire and Presto would sound with the Jazz and sound he got out of it on Counterparts.

I'm not sure about the Les Claypool story, thought it was the producer who suggested he go with the Fender as it was a more rock orientated record! As I said before the thin tone on those records was the sound that the band and producer wanted, it's not just the bass is it? Funny how HYF and Power Windows has some of,if not all of the most innovative complex bass playing of Geddy's career, on that Wal! And what about Geddy's Fender Jazz tone of recent years, anyone that was thinking of buying a Jazz bass and heard his mostly awful, brittle tone over the last decade which peaked on RIR may think that is the typical sound of a Fender Jazz but it most certainly is not, listen to that instrument on Tom Sawyer from Moving Pictures and it had a completely different tone back then, the natural tone which was great, but now we hear the tone that Geddy has fabricated through a complex signal chain and once again is the tone that he wants! All his Fenders sound identical, even the Jaco fretless! Did you listen to the isolated bass clip I posted with Flea playing BSSM, hardly farty and lightweight is it? I think most serious bass players would agree that the quality and craftsmanship of the handbuilt, all British Wal bass leaves the mass produced American built Fenders lagging well behind, however if that's what you like then that's great!

Yep, I've said that too. It's raspy and scratchy. Though it has improved since moving to the Orange amps but all of the emulation clownf u c kery is what's doing his tone in these days. Digital amps do not sound like the real thing.

And I'll say this again all of their hearing is suspect at this stage of their career.

Yeah I agree with that, he should go back to the natural sound of the Fender, the last of which was on Counterparts! All basses are capable of producing a variety of tones on their own but Geddy seems unhappy with this and wishes to change it beyond recognition for some reason, surely it would be easier just to change the instrument, maybe he should try a Sadowsky NYC or similar boutique Jazz that would give him a natural brighter edge that he seems to prefer! I understand the Wals tone is not for everyone but I think this fantastic instrument has sadly been misunderstood and somewhat pigeonholed by the thin sound that Geddy used during his time with these basses which is not a true representation of what they are capable of! Wow...bass players are silent. I have a couple of new basses, but I can't seem to post photos anymore. Anyway, I have two new modulus basses, a quantum 5 and a 6. Productive summer.

Live anywhere near a Guitar Center? I'm sure they have a few on their walls. The newer Squier stuff is pretty decent. I had a Classic Vibe P and J a few years ago and they were really nice. Especially the necks on them.

My first bass was a Rogue 200 and after switching the P to Dimarzio and the J to a Sadowsky along with some new Ernie Ball strings, it sounds pretty amazing.

I also picked up a Yamaha 170 for bext to nothing. Took the flatwounds off in favor of some Elixirs and swapped the pups for Dimarzio and this custom.Ballestieri J and that bass now sounds pretty fine.

Got an Ibanez Gio in the parking lot of guitar center and again, Ernie ball stings, a Sadowsky J and a yet to be determined p.

I just built a Fender jazz knock off. It has Black.DL strings, a set of custom made Dominger pups, an Omega bridge, which is basically a Badass and various other parts.

Amps are a Kustom 10 and an Acoustic model.20, I believe

It's not bad but honestly for the same money (or less!) you can get a Musicman SUB series which sounds and plays incredible for the price. I have the next step up (a Ray34) and that thing's a shave away from a full-blown $2000 Stingray for less than half the price too. Musicman makes some mighty fine instruments, you should check some out.

I never played a wal, but I like the sounds from most who played them. I did not like Lee's sound though. Trevor Jones made one sound good though.

Percy Jones?

Indeed... Must have been thinking of Trevor Horn. He could play a mean fretless as well...though not a Wal
