Blue J
I think Natural Science is one of the only Rush songs that I like better on the album than when they do it in concert.  What does this have to do with AFTK and CA? Nothing. :) What about Digital Man, too? Blue J
They changed so much throughout the decades. They certainly did. Knowing you as I do, I can "hear" just the way you meant that.  Haha! I can, too.

Tombstone Mountain
AFTK loses to CA. The amount of epic tracks on CA puts it on top. The AnarchistCarniesHalo EffectSeven Cities Of GoldThe WreckersThe GardenBU2BCaravanWish Them Well How are any of these more epic than A Farewell To Kings, Xanadu or Cygnus X-1? As for CA's title track and Headlong Flight, how are they more epic than Xanadu alone? As for songs like Carnies, The Wreckers, BU2B2 or The Garden, how can they top songs as classic and timeless as Cinderella Man, or Closer To The Heart? And as a segue to the next track, come on, their is now way that BU2B2 tops Madrigal? Seriously, there is absolutely NOTHING on CA that outdoes AFTK. You go well overboard with CA, and when it comes to the greatness of AFTK, so do I!Ok cupcake boy. Here's my response. The AnarchistCarniesHalo EffectSeven Cities Of GoldThe WreckersThe GardenBU2B--close to being boldCaravanWish Them WellHeadlong FlightClockwork Angels Bolded because they're all time classic tracks. The rest are merely good to real good. Fantastic songwriting. As I said, AFTK is a great album, Clockwork Angels simply has an overabundance of greatness. It has several mini-epics. Interesting how you don't address the greatness of Caravan. A sizzling track.Carnies, Halo Effect, are less than equal to Cinderella Man?You dismiss The Garden as being inferior to CTTH? Whatever man. These things are self-evident. If you can't see it for yourself, no one can really help you. Maybe Dr. Cooper can...maybe. If you get on his good side I have to say, when it comes to CA we have the same favourite songs! Afraid that I prefer every song on AFTK to CA, and thats that. OK whatever dude. Jam away at your leisure My surprise came, not from your favouring CA, but from the use of the word Epic. The entirety of the album is epic. And they're are mini epic songs on the album. We just had a poll confirm that Was gobsmacked, because, just in my opinion, not one song comes close to the epic grandeur of AFTK. AFTK is a collection of songs. They don't tie in to one another. With Clockwork Angels they all relate to one another. Not one song comes close? they shouldn't. It's not AFTK's it's a different record altogether. And as for the shorter songs on AFTK, they carrt a weight, a vibe, that just isn't their on CA, or any other album to be exact. We can debate that...each album has it's own vibe. The vibe of CA carries a vibe that is unmistakable. I prefer it to AFTK. I don't want Rush albums to sound the same...that is a common wish here. Part of the allure of CA comes from the sound. Which many people complain to the point of sounding like their wussy ears can't handle even listening to great songs.  It's chum I am truly stunned anyone can think otherwise, but bear in mind your taking moderate offense to my tone is exactly the sort of feeling others get with the way you post at times. I really don't care what THOSE (and yes they can be narrowed down to a few) people think. Really not offended by your tone. I know your a young person trying to make sense out of life. When you strike it out on your own, things will change for you in terms of perception of reality.  I don't know if you realise it, but the way I responded to you is exactly how I HATE to come across. But you do. All the time. I love your touchy feely times. And I don't need any gang to come forward to back me up either. Ahhh but you have a few don't you? We all have people that we tend to follow and who do likewise And I don't namedrop. This is getting like the Treeduck thread In fact, I was more stunned by your reaction to my post considering, than I was to your opinion on AFTK. It's boring me But...the whole purpose of these threads is for us who see CA differently to analyze where exactly CA fits in the overall view of the bands discography. We can disagree, which we all do (tastes are different after all), but I must say I am quite impressed by how strong the devotion towards CA is against these early albums. Our clashing aside, this is a real eye opener for me. And believe me, there will come a time when only 1 album in two decades gets picked over CA.Thanks for your insight. But Geddy sings it beautifully. Lots of trill in his voice. This might have been the one I was thinking about because Geddy does sing it better here than on the album. He was in fine form that night!  You may be right. TheAccountant
CA starts slowly and, IMO, the recording could be much better. Then with Halo Effect it takes off and basically every song from there on is very good. AFTK does not have the recording issues and, with the exception of Madrigal, every song is at least very good. If it was a boxing match I would say that CA puts up a brave and valiant effort, giving every thing its got, but it goes down to defeat.  Its good, but its just against better competition. AFTK wins an entertaining match by a relatively comfortable margin and gets my vote.
