Yearly Standing at Concerts Thread

Recommended Posts

I've never felt any sort of "in synch" vibe from a rush crowd except during the encores on the last two tours. oh and when sawyer started set 2 on the TM tour. people in my section always look like they'd rather be anywhere but at a rush concert.

maiden's crowd is my favorite crowd

Yeah, ain't nobody sitting at a Maiden show.

that does suck, lol.

I've had some pretty in synch crowds for Rush in SoCal. SnA at the Hollywood Bowl in '07 was a good example of a crowd being fully pumped and amp'd yet controlled and in harmony. It's pretty rare to see aggro behavior at Rush, admittedly. But it's been known to happen.

The second leg of SnA in '08 at the new Nokia in downtown LA was a more laid back crowd, but into it nonetheless.

The Gibson Universal Amp LA Time Machine shows were madhouses, but that was 'cause they were playing such a small venue instead of their usual arenas.

'92 Roll the Bones in Irvine was another madhouse...but that's cause of the OC crowds more than anything else.

Scorpions fans are an entity unto themselves, I have to add.

But so are Rush nerds. In SoCal, anyway. :)

Who goes to see RUSH Live and sits in their seats? The wife and I have never (NEVER) sat for even 1 song during our 14 shows over the years. We have usually been in the first 5 rows or closer for most of them. Even in the lower bowl seats we never sit.

I'm really not sure how we would react to someone behind us demanding us to sit down. Maybe let him sit in our seats in front of us? Depends on where his seat is.

We sure wouldn't want to spoil any other Rush Fans experience. Same goes for our experience.

We stand, air drum, dance, scream, and down right make fools of our selfs.

This is what Rush Fans do. We don't stand still for 3 hours. Sit still either.

So, we sure hope nobody behind us shows their ass. Ha. Lol.

RUSH ON people's.

That's exactly why I like to sit as close as possible. The closer you are, the more people are into it.

If you're into the show you stand up. If you don't like it, you sit. It's better to have a full house of excited people than it is a bunch of fuddy-duddies just sitting there.

I get the point here, but I think if you can nail 10,000+ butts down to their seats that is quite the command and power of the music you are pumping out.

I see it as the opposite. Sitting is passive and standing is active. So if I band can get 10,000 butts out of their seats, that shows the power and the energy of the music!

If this is the case, how do you rationalize the memories of those who attended Doors' concerts in 1967 and 1968? That is a kind of power that being energetic doesn't reach.

RUSH ON people's.

A lot of Rush fans sit and close their eyes and not infrequently, are crying or tripping or whatever.

Rush fans in particular, I would say, especially those off the floor, sit more often than most other hard rock shows.

It's more a visceral existential experience, I suppose.

Few fans sit at AC/DC or Van Halen. But Rush? A fair amount, in my experiences.

There's nothing wrong with sitting at a concert, LOL.

But again....you have to pretty much go with the flow of your section.

Everybody stands on the floor. It's just how it is.

But in the loge or upper bowls...you have to be respectful of your surroundings.

If you are the only one standing in a section where everyone else (hundreds of people) are sitting.....sit the f**k down, or ask an usher to relocate you to a standing section.

It's really not rocket science. :)

I feel like this topic is more at the front of my mind as I'm in my mid-40's and inherited arthritis in my legs (thanks, Dad!). I sometimes just have to sit down and rest, though truthfully in those cases usually the people around me are really quite observant and offer to sit, but I tell them to stand and that I'll rejoin them in a minute. Also, it helps if I make sure I have access to, erm, pain management strategies. :)

In Vegas I am on the floor 8th row.....no f***ing way I am sitting. I have never sat on the floor.

Ever.

Now in Tampa I am sitting on the side section (amazing seats as well) so my son can see the band in all their glory. If people are sitting in front of me.....I will sit (as hard as that is) but if if they stand...I stand.

Common courtesy.

But on the floor if your expecting to sit.....don't get floor tickets.

If the row in front of me is standing, I stand. I didn't pay hundreds of dollars to look at the fans in front of me.

Shouldn't we be more concerned with what the people BEHIND us are doing instead of in front? Who cares if the people in front of you are sitting if the folks behind are standing and you won't interfere with anyone's enjoyment?

Last night in tampa 90% of my section stood the entire show. The people sitting appeared to be non fans brought by a boyfriend/girlfriend based on their general lack of enthusiasm for the entire show. I didn't hear anyone complain.

I had a bad accident, broke my back in three places and crushed my heel. Had many surgeries to repair the stuff and live in chronic pain, but I will stand at shows. I f***ing hate it, but I stand. So just remember not everyone is some damn fud. Some people just really can't deal with it and maybe, just maybe try thinking about your actions affect on the rest of the world once in awhile.

True, but if the folks in front of me are standing, and if I were to sit and couldn't see Rush, wouldn't I choose to stand?

Exactly. Some people have to sit. But said people are wiser if they sit in loge or upper bowl tiered seating.

The floor is no place for sitters, I agree. But again....standard concert etiquette dictates that whatever your section is doing en masse, you ought to be doing it too. If everyone's sitting except for you, you're being a pain in the ass to a a hundred other people, no matter how much you paid for your ticket.

I never understand the ppl who clearly know they're the only ones standing up (thus blocking the 20 folks behind them) in a section. If you really must shake your booty despite crowd preference, ask an usher to relocate you to a section where they're doing that. They almost always will accommodate you.

Not suggesting you shouldn't stand...your 2 options in that situation would be to stand yourself or ask the folks in front of you to sit. Personally, I'll always take option A. The problem could occur, though, when the people behind want to sit and decide to be less professional about the situation. IMO...people should expect that people stand at concerts and plan accordingly. Unless you're going to see Itzak Perlman or something, it should be the norm.

How many Perlman shows have you been :)

You are spot on. I've been in those situations, and it's very awkward. I would never want to tap someone's shoulder at a show asking them to sit. Yet I want to be polite, yet I don't want to shout over Rush and explain the situation to them. Hopefully the sitters are willing to wait for a break in the songs without spilling a beer on me and willing to talk politely to the folks in front of me about sitting. Lose lose situation.

I usually gut it out, but sometimes I have to sit for a bit. That's why Neil wrote the Garden, so I can sit and not care :) But I'd never be the dick who just stood up just to shake my ass when the mass was sitting, that's asshattery.

I'm 6'3. I stand at concert and sporting events. I usually tell the people behind me in advance to give them fair warning. I just spent $1,400 on 4 Rush tickets for the show in Austin. You better damn well believe I'm going to be standing on my feet all night and not sitting on my hands. If that bothers the people behind me (who probably spent close to the same pre ticket) then I'm sorry, but that's the risk you take. It's a rock concert. What do people expect?

It's unreasonable to expect people on the floor to sit. JMO

I do not consider that to be the case in the stands however. Last tour in we had three drunk people in front of us standing, and not such that you could move to a spot and look around them, but flailing their arms, moving all around, interchanging seats with their sitting buddies at times, it made the concert for me and my family unpleasant and difficult to watch in peace. They literally, single-handedly, had a good chunk of the section behind them standing whenever they decided to stand, when otherwise everyone sat down.

I think that it's unreasonable for people in the front rows of the upper sections to stand and expect everyone else to do the same. The floor is different for several reasons, one that you stated, people pay money and the expectation is to stand, even for me, but also because it's not elevated seating, so it makes more sense.

Quite frankly, I'd be in favor of simply open floor space w/o seats on the floor. They could sell some more tix too. Everyone stands all the time, so the seats just get in the way.
