Official R40 Newspaper Concert Reviews

Recommended Posts

Ok, here it is...the scrapebook for all the concert reviews from local papers where Rush performs during the R40 tour. Here's the Tulsa World's entry. This should be a lot of fun. We all know the history of critics and our favorite band. Seems the tune of the elite media continues to change it's tune.

But probably Rush’s most iconic quality is the vocal work from Lee. His remarkably high and clear voice was impressive when the band was taking off, but he hasn’t lost a single note after more than 40 years. It’s still as high and strong as ever, with a few exceptions on the highest range. But Lee was able to sustain notes for a long time through several songs.

This passage sticks out to me, on Ged's voice.

Not a bad review but since its his first show how credible an authority is he regarding geds voice?

Highly credible. He went by what HE heard. He was there.

Some Rush fans tend to be hyper-crytical. According to this writer he sounded great.

My point is he went overboard. No big deal.

I associate "as ever" with prior experience.

Its a far cry from the days of old when ged was described as donald duck on helium...

That was Mickey Mouse. I love to read the quote featuring Donald Duck. Geddy must've been sloshed that night.

Im a huge Geddy fan, but I listened last night, and Geddy's voice was straining a lot, as well as diving down rather than up on many songs. I'm perfectly fine with that... by the way, but his voice did not sound as strong as ever, thats just wrong. In addition to Neil's tendonitis, its perfectly clear to end on a good note, and play ANY old stuff at ALL, this has to be the end.

Saying as ever is plainly silly to any hardcore Rush fan. Let's just say his courage in even doing it, while strained, is admirable.

I agree he doesn't sound as good as he once did. That's a gross over exaggeration. But he did sound amazing last night. When he sang Hemispheres he reached a lot but still gave a very powerful melody. When he returned after Cygnus XI(instrumental) hehad a hard time singing Closer to the Heart intro. But after the intro he dialed back in. Lakeside Park had some issues in some areas. But amazing they played it at all. He's better than he was the last 4 years that is for sure. Edited by kentpilot

Except it probably won't be. They have said they probably will slow down. But if you watched the end of the show it wasn't any different than the last couple years Geddy even said his usual we hope to see you again in the future thing he usually says.

And they showed 1 image after all the videos and it said R40+ they added the plus. Its a hint.

I am 90% sure we will get another studio album and 15 shows minimum.

Perhaps, and I hope its true (that they tour again). Some vocalists can hold it together. One things for sure, many of the songs played last night will be permanently retired - he wont be able to sing them anymore, which, again, is fine with me. A 15 gig tour isn't really doable (shows like this), the finances of touring are such that they wouldn't make the money they'd need to for a show that big on only 15 dates.

It's a good thing they're taking a couple week+ breaks throughout the tour, otherwise Geddy's voice would be like Bob Dylan's by the time he reaches The Forum

No dount that goes into the planning. The WHo just cancelled a couple shows to give Daltry's voice a break... the vocal chords are a delicate instrument especially when aged.

Who said it had to be spread it out. It could be only 5 venue tour in different locations of the word New York, Toronto, LA, UK, Maybe The Gorge or Red Rocks they play 3 nights at each venue. Take a week off in between. I think he sounded really good on Xanadu and Jacob's Ladder. Like I feel he nailed those and can play those even next year and the year after.

He did sound great. It took some effort to hit those high and sustained notes, but when he did the crowd cheered extra loud.

Thats more or less unsupportable from a financial perspective IF its a show like this. No profit would would be made except, perhaps, if they played football stadii. He didnt sound good on Xanadu, the higher notes he was straining like hell, God love him.
