How Do You Deal With Rude People?

Dealing with customers always has the potential to go south.

I used to work a drug store chain and was a new cashier, it was my first month or so. It was busy and I went to open a new lane, looked behind me at the next register and asked the next cusotmer in line to come over, well the person three customers back came right away. I told her: I'm sorry I need the next person in line, you were three back and leaned back to get the other customer. The lady in fornt me threw stuff down and demanded to be checked out. I looked at her said the customers at the front get checked out first and she asked why. I told her because they had been waiting longer than her. She asked how I could possible know they had been waiting in line longer than her. I said becasue they are in front of you in line, they got there before you. She started screaming at me calling me names still demandintg to be checked out. The other customers saw me geting frazzled and upset and said to just go ahead and check her out. I was almost done when the floor manager showed up and asked what was going on. I explained, with support from the customers from the other line, what had happened. My manager sent me upstairs to calm down and relax and she finished the transaction. She later came upstairs and told me I handled it just fine and none of it was my fault. Enentually I ended up being one of the Customer Service Managers at that store, but my beginning left a lot to be desired.

I would tell them that I don't want to talk to them any more, and call them an empty-headed animal food trough wiper! Then I would fart in their general direction! If that didn't work, I would be forced to taunt them a second time. :)

Here's a fun game. Retail store, grocery stores are the best.

When I see someone looking down at their phone and walking, I immediately change my direction and walk DIRECTLY into them.

If they look up before I 'accidentally hit them' I veer off like a Blue Angel.

If Not- BAM!!!!

And they ALWAYS apologize to ME!

That will teach them to walk and text.

Two new ones:

Recently I was in the self-checkout line at Kroger. I've been going to this store for a while, and they have the nicest, friendliest staff. I enjoy talking to them.

Anyway, Karla was the attendant at the self checkout that day. The woman across from me clearly had no clue how to use the self-checkout registers - she couldn't scan her stuff, kept piling stuff right on top of the scale (which you can't do, obviously). Karla went to try to help her and the woman proceeded to chew her head off, screaming, "I'm not stupid! I know how to buy groceries!" Karla said quietly, "It's okay, ma'am. I can see you're getting a little frustrated and it's my job to help you. I want to help you!" She then offered to scan in some produce (produce can be a pain in the ass even if you know what you're doing). The woman responded by setting the produce on an empty stand and yelling, "I'm just not going to buy it! So there! Does that make you happy?"

I caught Karla's eye and mouthed, "WTF?" Finished my transaction. I then walked over to the nasty piece of work and said, "You know, you really ought to make a doctor's appointment and see about getting that broom taken out of your ass. It's obviously causing you problems." Then turned to Karla, who was stifling giggles, and said, "You have a great day. Don't let one screwed up bitch wreck it for you. I'll see you later this week." She mouthed, "Thank you."

So, I was piling groceries in my car and Karla came running out. She apologized and asked if I would mind talking to her manager. Yes, the rude bitch was over at customer service complaining about Karla. I was more than happy to, explained that Karla is always sweet and personable and never anything but professional and that the customer had behaved abominably. The manager wasn't too concerned - she said she knew Karla well enough to trust that she had been courteous and professional.

I hate seeing people abused like that. She works hard; because she's a checkout attendant in a grocery store doesn't mean she is somehow less of a human being.

Other story: American Airlines sucks ass. Big time. They lost my return flight reservation on Friday morning (merger with US Airways has screwed up a lot of stuff). And I would have been OK with that - stuff happens - except that they were rude about it to ME! I was shuffling a little and getting anxious, saying I was worried about missing my flight. The ticketing clerk snapped back, "Well, you're going to miss it anyway, because you don't have a reservation!" I had the e-ticket, which proved I DID have a reservation. So they kept looking - they'd booked me on the same flight a month later!!!! Their dates didn't match the one I had on my e-ticket, which saved my ass.

Three different agents later - I was booked on another flight, finally. Only one of them was at all pleasant. I'd never been in the Philly airport before and to get anywhere you have to go around your ass to get to your elbow. The guy who typed up my voucher for the new flight couldn't finish processing it (because he didn't have a phone - wtf?), so had to send me to another counter. He gave me wrong directions, and when I returned to ask again, he just stared at me and said, "You got lost? It's not that hard." A sympathetic passenger overheard and walked me to where I needed to go.

Never, ever flying AA again. The have attained a new level of suck.

Mara, I am glad you defended Karla. My sister also works in a grocery store and constantly tells me about people like this. I really don't know what gets up people's asses but I really wish they'd demand better of themselves than treating others in such an unnecessary way. And I am not the least bit surprised that this rude customer went and complained. It's them who are in the wrong but apparently, their lives are so miserable that all they want to do is cause grief for others. They do the same to my sister too. Miserable SOB's who need to be put in their place.

Well played, ma'am. Sounds like this Karla is a princess for tolerating that rude individual.

Right now I'm spending a month in Armenia because of family; and here, languages spoken are Armenian and Russian mainly, English being a second language.

St right to the story, the other day we went to a Sushi place and (as we don't know Armenian either russian) we spoke to the waitress in English. Surprise, he didn't know how to speak English. OK, no problem with that, unless this waitress had the worst face on earth because we didn't know their language. The food was OK, but his face was not even close. As there was no possible language message to be sent, nothing better than no tip and return the same face he gave us all the night

I backed out of the parking lot at the shopping center and some other guy backed out at the same time but I started to back out first. He pulled back in and I left but the guy must have been really pissed. About thirty seconds later as I was pulling out and making a left I hear this loud obnoxious yelling. All I could make out were the words "car" and "bastard." I'm sure he was cursing me out. The guy was big(as in fat)and often really huge people like to bully others because they think they can get away with it. They are used to throwing their weight around(literally). You'll notice lots of bikers are really huge fat guys. Anyway, I just ignored this jackass and kept driving. He went the other way anyway. People like this are nothing but a bunch of babies underneath it all. Usually it's best to just ignore assholes. If not you are sinking to their level. It takes a certain amount of discipline which is something almost all of these kinds of people don't have. So you win and they lose.
