Has anyone here ever heard about anything that might have happened to them between Hold Your Fire and Presto? I am asking because in the Rush book that I have (and I noticed it before I got the book but didn't know the correct time-frame), in looking of pictures taken during the Hold Your Fire tour (including Show of Hands) and during the Presto tour, they seemed, all of them, to have aged considerably in a very short time.

 

I'm wondering if it was at that point in time that fifteen plus years of touring caught up with them?

 

Interesting question - I ask it about myself: when exactly did I start to look older? I have to admit I never really noticed with Rush until I guess Vapor Trails. Then I noticed the wrinkles a bit. Maybe with Lee, he just looked like a young full-of-life kid when he was wearing that raccoon skin cap, but when he took it off, something changed - I think that was the start of the Yoko period for him? With Lifeson, I think the goatee made him start to show his age. It wasn't a good idea. Peart just started to look fleshy and jowly (?) at some point. . .

 

What book were you looking at? Any particular photographs you had in mind?

If you have the book Contents Under Pressure by Martin Popoff, just look at the pictures from Hold Your Fire/Show of Hands and flip to RTB. It is quite an obvious change in their appearance.

I think I see what you're getting at - but then, photographs can be a bit notorious for catching people at bad moments. I always try to duck the camera if I can, because it's so hit and miss--sometimes I look doughy and tired; sometimes I look okay (as okay as a homely-lookin' dude like me can look). The fellas might look pretty trim at the end of a tour, but maybe a bit out of shape at the end of a break or while recording. Who knows? Lifeson and Lee are aging pretty well it seems, so they have that going for them!

Indeed...part of my world died that night and every time I hear the opening to superconductor I think of that horrible transition...I can't even use that word. It exploded out of Xanadu like the alien sprang from John Hurt's chest. For that reason I have not listened to side 2 of Presto in years. A shame, because there are some great tunes on that record.

The RTB tour is my record of 5, they played a ton of shows here that tour. Verrrrry enjoyable, xanaductor excluded. I agree in that Presto, RTB n CP were all progressing steps in the hard rock direction. Made lots of sense at the time. After that it became very confusing, net boys and net girls.
