Rand was a sociopath, Peart is a sociopath. Better beware kiddies.

Anyone above the age of 16 who hasn't debunked Rand's "philosophy" already is a douche in my book.

Exactly, because sticking to your convictions, always giving 100%, not giving in to those who would drag you down to their level, trying to get others around to work harder instead freeload off of the system are horrible, horrible characteristics for any of us.

Do you know anything about Rand the person at all?

She wasn't nice.

Yes, I am aware she wasn't nice, she was quite a bitch from what I have read.

How does that make her ideas of living with integrity and honesty, striving to do your best all the time, not being beholden to anyone nor expecting anyone to be beholden to you, bad ideas?

Just because John Lennon was a scumbag, it doesn't mean I'd treat his music the same way.

John Lennon a scumbag? You got some nerve to say that. Why do you say it?

He used to beat women and was quite abusive to his son, Julian.

Years ago I read Anthem because of the Rush connection. I liked the story, although I understand it isn't like some of her more notorious books. I'm fine with not reading those because I don't like to be preached to about politics or anything, for that matter.

And, for what it's worth, Neil has since apologized for being so enamoured with Rand's writing, blaming it on being young and impressionable.

I didn't find them preachy, at least not The Fountainhead or Atlas Shrugged (maybe this one a little). I Just read them as stories about people trying to make it in the world around them and overcoming obstacles.

I found the Fountainhead to be a thinly veiled metaphor from start to finish. The biggest problem with her writing is the people don't seem natural or like "people" in any meaningful sense. Very, very one-dimensional.

Having said that, I still found the books very interesting and the ideas behind them very powerful. But great literature, they are not.

I discovered Rush before Rand, though at the time I didn't know of the connection between the two. At the time I read The Fountainhead (my introduction to Rand), I was just moving from casual interest in Rush to very, very interested in 1974-81 Rush, and my interest in Rush fueled my interest for Rand and vice versa.

This is not the place to discuss Ayn Rand.

We haven't got a children's forum...

If you understood the question, it was not simply about Ayn Rand's work ..

Another response completely void of content from you

Because once you acknowledge the kind of person she was you cannot then connect her to the virtues of integrity and honesty. My point being that if she couldn't follow her philosophy herself then why should anyone else give them credence as being practical?

Rand was all about people she believed to be talented being acknowledged as special and elite and that is what initially appealed to Peart. In other words she appealed to his vanity.

I respect your right to read this rubbish but once you give any credence to the utter tripe contained within her infantile tomes then man, really, I have to say that reflects negatively on your credibility.

Jeez Tony R give it a break, it's not about the woman, it's about her approach to life and how to live it to achieve the best for one's self. I'm not sure if I could spend 10 minutes alone in a room with her, but what she says has shaped my existence and been with me every day since I read the Fountainhead almost 40 years ago.

You don't have to live and breathe every word of hers to find parts inspirational. It's had a profound impact on my own values of self-worth and achieving my own happiness.

I've read a bunch of her shit thanks to peart. even shit that not even randians read like the romantic manifesto. I agree with probably 5% of what she says

her fiction's really simplistic and it's easy to fall in love with a character like howard roark, he gets whatever he wants and does whatever he wants and doesn't give two shits about anyone but himself, and that is definitely appealing to teenagers (I was 15-16 when I was reading her books) but if you actually tried acting like that guy in real life, shit would hit the fan real fast.

I don't want to upset anyone but I just don't think my ego is big enough for me to get much out of her stuff.

even the stuff that I like in rand's work, like be the best you can be, don't give in to irrational bullshit, etc, I was aware of all that before I ever read rand. like did some of these objectivists never even consider living to their potential until they read about howard roark blowing up a building?

Well I've read all her crap, read bios and histories, and criticisms. I'd say I was the opposite of ignorant.

I read the Fountainhead, Atlas Shrugged and Anthem back in my late teens due to Neil's association with her books. While I found the philosophy fascinating at the time, it wasn't necessarily something that I took literally. I can see why the "every man for himself" viewpoint would be appealing to him and to anyone that is searching for their place in life. Especially to someone who is an introvert and finds it harder to fit in for whatever reason.

"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs." -- John Rogers
