Rush, Ayn Rand, and Philosophy In Your Life

Curious to hear everyone's thoughts in regards to RUSH, Ayn Rand, and the philosophies and beliefs based on their writings ...

I know that Neil has since distanced himself a bit from Rand in particular - which is understandable as most who go through life will be in a perpetual state of growth and reevaluation ...

But the foundation of being self sufficient, and making one's own existence the springboard for better contribution to the big picture, is something that I feel will be with me forever ..

Growing up I knew nothing of Rand's work, and it was 2112 that led me to her ( fantastic ) novella ANTHEM ... I love ANTHEM, and I'd like to hear if RUSH have opened the door to any books, philosophies or other non-musical aspects in life ...

Rush introduced me to Ayn Rand, and I am now fairly familiar with her work and consider myself to be an Objectivist. Her values will stick with me until I die for sure.

We just got finished reading Anthem in school when I realized she was I believe listed on inside cover of 2112. It struck me when I realized it but I am afraid I'm not a big reader or deep thinker. I can't tell you today what her philosophies are .

I've read Anthem, The Fountainhead, and Atlas Shrugged. Couldn't recall any details of them at this point even if you had a gun to my head.

I feel kind of bad saying that, because I do consider myself well-read, in general. They just didn't stick with me, though.

But I'm not a Rush fan because of Objectivist philosophy. I love the music. And Neil is a great lyricist, but he didn't need Ayn Rand to become the lyricist that he is.

Has there ever been a Rush-Rand thread that DIDN'T wind up in SOCN?

Doubting this is the first.

Lucas, I discovered Ayn Rand the same way you did. Started with Anthem, then read the other 3 novels she wrote. The Fountainhead is one of the most important books I've ever read. Changed my life as much as Rush did. My first born daughter's middle name is Ayn.

This is not the place to discuss Ayn Rand.

We haven't got a children's forum...

You'll have to forgive Tony, he's British.

We need to keep this place free from substance and focus on the things that matter, Rush license plates, new 5.1 releases of obscure material, and if we're lucky, almost audible bootlegs from the Presto tour.

You forgot thickness of vinyl. 200mg or 1800mg or whatever they are. Its certainly more important than vinyl length...

Rand was a sociopath, Peart is a sociopath. Better beware kiddies.

Anyone above the age of 16 who hasn't debunked Rand's "philosophy" already is a douche in my book.

Exactly, because sticking to your convictions, always giving 100%, not giving in to those who would drag you down to their level, trying to get others around to work harder instead freeload off of the system are horrible, horrible characteristics for any of us.

Do you know anything about Rand the person at all?

She wasn't nice.

Yes, I am aware she wasn't nice, she was quite a bitch from what I have read.

How does that make her ideas of living with integrity and honesty, striving to do your best all the time, not being beholden to anyone nor expecting anyone to be beholden to you, bad ideas?

If we stick with the OP's two statements above we can avoid some of the petty bickering...nawatimsayin. ;)

Just because John Lennon was a scumbag, it doesn't mean I'd treat his music the same way.

I was a full-blown, card-carrying Objectivist in my mid 20s through my early 30s. I was completely convinced of, and enamored with, Rand's ideas, but I lost my idealism along the way and began to see the world through more a more pragmatic lens.

But yeah, it was Peart's acknowledgement in 2112 that got me curious about her.

Years ago I read Anthem because of the Rush connection. I liked the story, although I understand it isn't like some of her more notorious books. I'm fine with not reading those because I don't like to be preached to about politics or anything, for that matter.

And, for what it's worth, Neil has since apologized for being so enamoured with Rand's writing, blaming it on being young and impressionable.

I hope I don't come off nit picking or snarky but words have meaning and for this subject nuance might be important, is apologized the right word?

I didn't find them preachy, at least not The Fountainhead or Atlas Shrugged (maybe this one a little). I Just read them as stories about people trying to make it in the world around them and overcoming obstacles.

John Lennon a scumbag? You got some nerve to say that. Why do you say it?

"I Just read them as stories about people trying to make it in the world around them and overcoming obstacles." by being true to themselves and what they believe in. " We The Living " is a great read , informative( about the rise of communism in Russia ) , sad and ultimately tragic at the end.
