It's sex for the ears.

It's a metaphorical intercourse.

To my untrained ear, it sounds to me like Alex made great strides in his playing from 2112 to Hemispheres. He sounds to me still feeling his way in 2112, but had become the master in Hemispheres.

Your untrained ear is 100% officially correct :D

They pushed themselves a lot during Hemispheres too. Geddy said they were actually playing above their technical ability at the time, though obviously it pushed them to get better very quickly. I'm sure all of the live playing helped all of them improve a lot between 2112 and Hemispheres. They definitely honed their chops during that time.

Truly great artists always let the music dictate the technicality, not the other way around *cough* Dream Theater *cough*. Hemispheres is a great example of this.

Might I mention the longstanding winner of this particular poll in opposition to multiple comments about Hemispheres ALWAYS beating 2112?

For many of us, Hemispheres will always be #1.

That thread was started back in 2004. Doesn't count if it's over a year old. Only recent threads are what are being referenced. :)

Quite right, and I'm sure that by now they have come to see the error of their ways. Musical taste is refined by age. :laughing guy:

Very tough call. I like the beginning of 2112, especially live when the crowd is bouncing and chanting. I agree with some responses that correctly state that the song drags a bit in the middle. Although Hemispheres doesn't have an epic beginning on the same level as 2112, the song captures my full attention from beginning to end. I bought the album when Hemispheres came out and listen to the album regularly (not the original vinyl unfortunately). Thus, by a slight margin I have to say Hemispheres.

Hemispheres is the far superior song. Musically, lyrically, structurally- it's just better. 2112 had great parts, the first two sections are pure energy. But it loses steam. Hemispheres doesn't lose anything. 2112 also has a better outro, but again, Hemispheres is better overall. It's a pretty easy win. 2112 also is not better than Fountain.

I can't believe I am saying this.

Hemispheres.

A few weeks ago I'd have said 2112 and slated it but the magic finally got to me.

I play Hemispheres frequently now, and the title track is often on loop!

Both are fantastic, however, my musical sense is piqued more by Hemispheres than by 2112 :finbar:

You, sir, reside on a special physical plane of existence. I thought it futile to even attempt to look for another human soul that appreciated Fountain at least as much as I.... Problem solved :chickendance:

To each his own. While Cygnus II Hemispheres is quite good, I find repetitiveness and big length (over 18 minutes is too much) of that epic to be a main shortcoming. 2112 is not repetitive at all, it's musically richer and much more interesting to me.
