Who here saw Rush on the AFTK and/or Signals tour(s)?

Don't know if I've mentioned this before, but my mother was born during the AFTK tour.

I was 16 in 1974 when the 1st rush album came out. I was 18 when I saw them for the 1st time at Massey Hall. So, I was going to Rush shows before your mother was born. Let that marinate for a while. Man, do I feel old.

Rush had a certain power & majesty about them that is long lost IMHO. (you had to be there to compare)

I just caught this line. I agree. And it is evident when you watch the old concerts vs. the new ones. It's unfortunate, but that's the way it goes.

Well, I would respectfully disagree. My first Rush show was 1977 and several after that, but I think the best show I saw was Milwaukee for the Vapor Trails Tour. Everything was just perfect, the sound, the crowd, the venue, the band!

My first concert was Signals tour in 83. Small hockey arena with 6000 max attendance. No floor seating so it was relatively easy to elbow your way up front. I didn't have a car so I took the city bus to the rink. Didn't have a ride home until I ran into some dorm buddies. But those were minor inconveniences...it was rush man. Don't remember much about the set list except it was obviously MP and Signals heavy.

I'm going to root around to see if I can find my stub from Massey Hall. I know I've got it somewhere. I also have the hand out we got when we walked in. I think I have the tour book too.

I was rooting around earlier today & I found a bunch of stubs. NYE '76, 78. '79, Copps Coliseum, 1991. Ivor Wynne, a bunch from the '80's. Found the stub from the CNE. Still can't find the Massey Hall show though. I also found stubs from when Triumph & the Stampeders played our high school. I'll post them when I figure out how.

The opening bit for the The Weapon was classic. It involved a video skit with Joe Flaherty doing his dracula type character " Count Floyd" from second city television.

Now for you kids out there, 2nd city was a SNL type comedy show where John Candy, Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis, Harold Ramis, Cathrine O'Hara, Andria Martin & Dave Thomas got their start. It was a flat out cutting edge riot of a comedy show, and I belive there is some of the skits on you tube. Anyhoo back to Count Floyd. The Count was a parody of the classic Saturday mid day horror movie host that a lot of sindicated tv statons used to air after the morning cartoons concluded to keep kids tuned in. His shtick was to always introduce "A real scary story" to the audience. Well in the intro to The Weapon the bit was about "A real scary song" in which the listener could not enjoy to it's full potential without their 3-D glasses. It was a classic bit. It's hard to believe I even remember things from those daze :-P But I was a huge fan of SCTV and a HUGE fan of Rush & I love the song so I guess it stuck. In retrospect (pun intended) this was probably part of the creative concept of having main stream celeb's doing video funnies for the shows. such as the likes of Jerry Stiller doing the intro video of the the S&A tour or having Paul Rudd & that other guy (I know he's Jason Segal) as the "I love you man" characters doing the back stage with Niels sandwhich. I only got to hear Xanadu once in it's entirety some where back when they were performing the song to pick the best recording for Exit Stage Left. after that only a few bars were incoorpereted into the dreded (impo) medley. I really didn't like the medley eventhough I understood the concept of trying to let the fans at least hear parts of their favorite songs in the short time (after opening acts) they had to perform the vast amount (even way back then) of material they had. I would of preferred a complete song in it's entirety as opposed to chopped up little bits. Then they moved into the evening with format virtually eliminated the medley. Eventhough the brought it back for the opening of R-30

I very much enjoyed the VT tour. Mostly it was because they were back after many years of wondering, thinking even, it would not happen. VT wasn't one my favorite albums and the set list had four (I think?) songs from VT, but I could have cared less. They could have sat up there and done Doug and Bob McKenzie routines between songs and I would have been fine.

Not lucky enough to have seen FTK. My first two tours were MP and Signals.. Both at a packed Nassau Coliseum during the Islander Cup dynasty. To the lucky ones proclaiming about their youth today and their grandparents were born after Counterparts...sometimes timing is everything. Rush at the height of their popularity playing in Fort Neverlose...

Sorry for the digression...I recall a huge difference between the MP and Signals tours. MP opened with 2112...timing was everything at the beginning of the show...and was very ominous and a mysterious aura to a distant place that culminated in the explosions and pyro at the end of Overture. A dark exciting and mysterious environment.

Signals was the beginning of their comedy era, with the three stooges opening. They then followed with a series of their biggest radio songs. Much lighter environment. Almost seemed like a different band. They obviously prefer the comedy since then but their shows are awesome.

Too young to attend AFTK tour. Mom wouldn't let me....Signals was my first Rush concert at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. I was in the 10th grade and mom finally let me take he bus down from Orillia which is about and 1/2 hours north of TO. I was absolutely blown away by the entire spectacle. The volume of the show, the lights and of course the set list. I still remember feeling the base drum reverberating throughout my entire body. The encore was amazing and included 2112, Xanadu and La Villa Strangiato.

March 17th and 18th Hollywood Florida.

My first two Rush concerts (first concerts for any band ever). Back to back nights of Signals tour bliss. I don't remember a ton of it but I remember the crowds moans and groans anytime Geddy said "here is another song from Signals". It was crazy. I loved that album. It was my first official release as a major fan of the band. I picked up on them after they released Moving Pictures. Anyway awesome time. My friends older brother drove both nights our seats were damn good (section 116 lower bowl close to the stage for those who remember the Sportholes layout) and it was the first time I really felt like a teenager spreading my wings.

Geez! That's going back a long, long, time ago! I think I was 12 or 13 when I saw my first Rush concert, AFTK Tour. My step-brother took me. I've only missed 2 tours since then... Roll The Bones (I had a massive case of the stomach flu!) and R30 (F***ing Ticketmaster Canada and 3rd party back then wanted $350+ when I think the face value was around $50-$60 for Toronto).

I can't really remember the AFTK but Signals was pretty cool at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. I think the Payolas opened up for them! Don't remember much about the set list though.

I saw them the first time in 1983 in Düsseldorf (Germany). Nazareth was the support Band. Long time ago!!! I remember, that a lot of People doesn't really like Signals at that time. For some people there was too much synth on the Album. I often heard that saying on that evening. But for me it was a great concert. I like Signals very much, eseacilaly Losint It. What a great song...

Well, I remember AFTK, and what I remember best about it was when they Cygnus X-1 when they really started using projection. That was awesome even though I was a bit toasted during the show. I remember being stage right 1/4 way back. Personally a trip back then.

I have had that problem many times. If you type quickly it misses a bunch of letters

When I use Internet Explorer, I have this problem. Try Firefox or Google Chrome.

That's because you have superior taste in Rush music.

Lets see....my first Rush show (of 28 thus far) was the Signals tour (Lexington, KY 10/30/82). I was a 14yo high school freshman (and drummer), having been turned onto Rush just a year or two earlier from a drum teacher. I did not own EVERY Rush record at this point but was REALLY into their more current stuff (PWaves-->Signals). I had yet to even see them on TV, so the anticipation of actually seeing them move onstage (especially Neil behind the kit) was incredibly high. Come to think of it, I might have seen a video for Tom Sawyer or Limelight on MTV but definitely not that often. My seat was in the back corner of the lower arena. I pretty much watched the show through binoculars. It was also my first time actually seeing (and smelling) someone smoke pot (3-4 rows behind me). I also remember seeing a guy directly in front of Geddy with a home made tshirt that said "Get Ready For Geddy"---I was so jealous--thinking Geddy might actually wave at him or something! Needless to say I was blown away by the show. I couldn't believe they actually had a huge movie screen behind them! It was so freaking cool --like when they played Red Barchetta--there was a car moving along a highway!! Wow!! My memories of Neil--how calm and cool he was--but still so aggressive. I remember thinking, "wow, he almost never looks up--so concentrated on the job at hand"... He was dressed really cool too. White shirt and a skinny black tie (almost looked like a waiter). I also couldnt believe how ambidextrous he appeared. For example, the opening hi hat sequence of The Weapon: he played with his left hand (as seen in the P/G live DVD). Not really a big deal, but NOT something I was expecting to see. Same with Tom Sawyer--I assumed the high hat part was played with both hands---wrong, just the right. As a young impressionable drummer--I though it was so cool. Speaking of The Weapon, I totally remember the Count coming on the screen, but having no idea who the guy was OR what he was saying. Lastly, I remember Alex coming out for the final song wearing a mask---made him look like a member of DEVO or something (black plastic type hair do)....it was the day before Halloween after all. Anyway, those are my memories of that epic night!

Phew .. Been ages since I've been in here. Won't bore people with why.

First saw Rush at the Glasgow Apollo on February 17th 1978 on the Kings tour. Very very few of us girls in the crowd in those days! Sorry Foghorn, they only played 2 nights in Glasgow on the Kings tour not 3.

Signals tour - I saw them on the 24/25 May at Ingliston just outside of Edinburgh. Bloody awful place.

37 years later, still flying off to see them somewhere lol

Yep Tim, I'm part of the Glaswegian Choir on Exit Stage Left. You can hear me scream during the intro to CTTH

I've seen them every tour since 1977. UFO also played, and another band I can't remember. It was the Farewell To Kings tour. I loved the Signals tour! I don't get how folks were turned off when they went to synths and keyboard?? Already have tickets in hand for R40!!
