driven_to_xanadu Posted February 11, 2015 Share Posted February 11, 2015 This is tough. Power Windows has the highest highs and the lowest lows (the second side of the album is brutal). HYF is probably the most consistent, but it's best doesn't compete with the other two. Presto is a nice break from the other two, but it is uneven...less so than PoW but more so than HYF. But this is like picking the valedictorian at summer school. There are high points, but these are 3 of Rush's 6 worst albums. Still, over the years I've developed more love for Hold Your Fire than I had when it came out. Those are the three songs which I think rival the band's worst output. Territories could be their worst song if Counterparts weren't around. I just think the quality of the songs were the biggest culprit. Don't get me wrong. Presto is a good album. But in the cannon of Rush it is way down the list for me personally. The production while soft and thin gives Presto it's unique character. The thing I love about Rush and what has always kept them so interesting is the different productions we have gotten over the course of their career. I am glad they broke away from Terry Brown. Because we never would have had Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows or Hold Your Fire which for me were such monumental accomplishments for this band. Think about it for a second. Power Windows came 4 short years after Moving Pictures. Talk about a 180 and pushing the envelope. That is what made Rush, Rush for me in the big picture. Always moving forward. And it came full circle with Roll The Bones where they blended the pop rock I think Geddy was going for but getting crunchy guitars back for Alex. Then they reached back on Counterparts and returned to their power trio roots and have been doing that since. Presto is a unique Rush album in that it was far more organic than anything since Signals and piano and backing vocals were introduced in a big way. I also loved Neils drums on Presto and Roll The Bones. Really crisp with ton's of snap and pop. Just different. I have been in a 90's Rush mood the past 2 weeks and have been listening to the Atlantic sessions in order on my morning drive. I am just about finished with Roll The Bones and popping in Counterparts for the first time in a long while. But overall Presto was a soft unassuming record with some great high points, but overall an uneven and seemingly some unfinished ideas. It has some low lights for me in Superconductor and Anagram. Both those songs are duds in my book and it was the first time I ever really had some disdain for songs by Rush since Rivendell and Madrigal (utter crap). Anyway.
