bathory
I think Power Windows is awful. Hold Your Fire is so-so. Presto gets my vote on account of only two strong songs. Well the diva's spoken we're done, lol Hail Lorraine :D MickThat was very unfair of you, Mick, to say that. :eyeroll: Coming from you, Bathory, that is definitely rich. I am very offended. Lorraine
I'm in good company - me and JARG. Who would have ever thought I'd have to go to bat for Presto? :)
bathory
I like what they tried to do on presto - the whole "return to rock" thing - but I think the execution feels half-assed. I think it's got some great songs though

EagleMoon
Power Windows by a large margin. I wouldn't have said that before the CA tour. Hearing the songs live really made me love them where before I didn't really care that much for the album.

The Analog Cub
Power Windows >>> Hold Your Fire >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Presto All songs on PoW range from very good to eargasm. Many of Geddy's best vocal performances are on here. The guitar's not quite as awesome as on Grace Under Pressure (but few albums period are as awesome as Grace Under Pressure) but Alex still has some great spots, notably in Marathon and Emotion Detector. Downside: Grand Designs and Emotion Detector are great songs, but edging on too cheesy, and a foreshadowing of the problems HYF has. Then Geddy started playing the Wal :sigh: I love 4 songs off of Hold Your Fire. Prime Mover-Turn The Page is excellent, and Alex delivers some of his best guitar work on Lock And Key. Neil's drums are tasteful and interesting throughout, but as we all know Ged went overboard with the synth. It's got a few stinkers on here, and I was never a big fan of Time Stand Still, aka Rush-lite. And then there's Presto. Only time I can stomach stuff off of that one is when songs are given the live treatment (which REALLY helps) like the title track, and Alex delivered some good guitar work on Chain Lightning and Red Tide, but you have to get past the tinny pop-rock this album is full of. Apart from that, I just really don't like the songs. Show Don't Tell is probably their worst album opener, IMO, and that's just scratching the surface. Unfortunately, the album that followed didn't improve as much as I would have liked, though at least it has a couple great songs. HemiBeers
Ugh the Synth period. 1. Power Windows - good songs despite the heavy synths. 2. Presto - has a few redeaming songs but the production is horribly tinny. 3. Hold Your Fire - or as I refer to it as 'hold your nose'. I hate this album. It has no real bite to any songs. All the songs sound like overproduced mush. I actually put this on the other day to remind myself why I hated it. I played about 45 seconds of each song, then the next song was just as boring, and on and on. As a musician, there's no song with any typical Rush 'surprises'. toymaker
It is a bit hard to choose from these (well, it's not hard to put Presto in third place). I was young enough when these were released that I defended them and tried very hard to like them, but in hindsight I really think these goddamned synthesizers just got in the way. There's some fine playing on the guitars and percussion, but those synthesizers are just like that obnoxious dude at the party who ruins it for everyone else . . . always butting in, always laughing too loud and talking with his mouth full. f*cker. I hate that guy. Where was I? Some great potential on all of these albums. I went with Power Windows in spite of that creepy cover. But I'm thinking already I might change my mind because I do like Prime Mover quite a bit.

Disk98
Really tough. I love all these albums dearly, but Power Windows is just a notch above the other two. Every song on it is great. Not a single song worthy of a skip. Hold Your Fire has two clunkers (Open Secrets and High Water), and Presto three (War Paint, Anagram, and Hand Over Fist), but both are still great. '80s Rush is awesome!

waluigithewalrus
This is one that I just don't think is close. Power Windows is awesome, while the other two have great moments, but have some definitely questionable parts *coughTaiShancough*. So Power Windows get the vote.

driven_to_xanadu
Power Windows for me. Probably my favorite Rush album after Permanent Waves & Moving Pictures. HYF is good, I enjoy most songs but it isn't a top Rush album. Presto is the same, plenty of good songs but I'm just not able to place it in my mind as a top tier Rush album. LedRush
This is tough. Power Windows has the highest highs and the lowest lows (the second side of the album is brutal). HYF is probably the most consistent, but it's best doesn't compete with the other two. Presto is a nice break from the other two, but it is uneven...less so than PoW but more so than HYF. But this is like picking the valedictorian at summer school. There are high points, but these are 3 of Rush's 6 worst albums.

AstrosJake
Hold Your Fire and Power Windows are my two favorite Rush albums. of course I love the old stuff and the hits on Moving Pictures, but these two are the ones I break out most often. I voted for Hold Your Fire but it's really close. Really the only song I'll skip if it comes on is Tai Shan. Lock and Key is okay, High Water is solid, but all the other songs are GOOD. This might be Neil's best album lyrically. On Power Windows, I'm not a fan of Mystic Rhythms, and Territories is okay, but the rest are really really good songs. Some of the most overlooked Rush songs are off of these two albums. And for Presto, there's a good group of fantastic songs (Presto, The Pass, Chain Lightning, Show Don't Tell), but there's also a lot of filler songs that are a bunch of goop, like Superconductor and Hand Over Fist
