concert advice :)

Hi!

I don't go to a lot of concerts and this is my first time on the floor for a Rush show - row 10. SO EXCITED.

Any advice on how to get the most out of the evening?

I'm 5'5" - how much heel do I need to be able to see?

I want to hear everything (of course) but people will wear ear plugs, right? Do you guys have advice on a brand or decibel rating?

Thanks!

My friend says wear heels but I would guess you don't want to have them be too high, twisting an ankle would not be fun. I am going to be on the floor for the first time myself but I am 5' 7" so don't think I will need heels, want to be able to move easily :codger: old timer that I am :coy:

Didn't know ear plugs were so high tech, just planning on having some...sorry I wasn't much help

It all comes down to whether or not you end up with some 6'6" monster standing right in front of you. If you luck out with some average height people then that's much better :)

As far as ear plugs, I don't wear them myself. But I've probably already got some hearing loss as a result of hundreds of concerts and many hundreds of hours spent working in nightclubs so I'm less concerned with the damage sustained from a single show.

I'm almost 5 foot 10 and I still occasionally get people in front of me and can't see. That's a real pain. Hopefully that won't happen to you but you're not that far back so hopefully you have a bunch of shorties in front of you. :)

Other advice might be to eat before you go. Buying food at the venue is very expensive. Most I usually get is a pretzel and a pop or something. Oh and don't forget to pee before the concert.

At 5'5" you should be able to get on some guy's shoulders. As a female, security will probably let you cheat forward too!

Yeah, that seems... unlikely. On the CA tour, I had great seats up the side and it was AWESOME but I couldn't stand up without blocking people and my neighbors were some loud fellows talking *over the songs* about lawn care. This time I wanted to get on the floor so I could stand and rock out a little. I assume most people up front will share my enthusiasm. (Right?) Do people really "cheat forward"? Would you say the atmosphere is generally friendly or aggressive (if you're a woman)?

The decibel level at the show I attended was around 95-98 which allows for 3 hours of continuous music safe from hearing damage. I didn't wear earplugs and my ears were fine afterwards with no ringing. Having some with you would be a good measure just in case. Unless you want to buy some expensive custom molded earplugs, I would suggest those that looks like a christmas tree (In Denmark we called them christmas trees because of how they look - don't know if that applies to USA?). They're more expensive than the foam ones, but the foam earplugs block out all the treble so you're left with a very muffled sound in your head. Don't know how much they attenuate but they will suffice, trust me.

My mom is about the same height as you and when we saw Rush (we were standing on the floor) her view was blocked by a small group of young dudes at my height (6'3"). Luckily they were aware of their surroundings, so they arranged where they stood so my mom was able to see the stage. With any luck you will experience the same courtesy if your view gets blocked :)

Not aggressive. I suppose there could always be exceptions but so far I've met a lot of nice people. I usually end up striking up a conversation with the people around me. It's fascinating to find out where people are from, how far they've traveled to the show, how many times they've been to concerts...etc. It's like a big huge family at a concert. More so than any other band I've ever seen.

I agree. I've never felt any aggression at a Rush show. I've always found the crowd to be very engaging and friendly. I'm standing and rocking out and singing at the top of my lungs regardless of where I'm standing ... er, sitting ... and I sometimes wear earplugs but usually don't and haven't had a problem.

And if you're the only one in the section who is standing and rocking out ... well then you're in a lame section (it's a Rush concert!) and politely smile and rock out if someone decides to ask you to sit down at a Rush concert.

At least while the band is playing. If you're standing and rocking out and Rush isn't on stage yet, well ...

Oh, yeah ... and enjoy the show! :)

Yeah, they're called ETY plugs by Etymotic Research. They simply reduce the decibel level, but allow you to hear all of the sound.

You don't need earplugs because it's not a club venue. The sound will be just right, but those ear plugs aren't that expensive.

The problem isn't that people in front of you will be too tall, it's that everyone is trying to film the concert on their smart phones. I really, really, really, wish they would ban phones at a show. Your mind will make memories. I think these smart phones are the reason that no one wants to rock out anymore.

Attire: Jeans and t-shirt, because I'm stuck in the late 80s and early 90s. lol

I'm 5'5" too and for me its really no problem. I've seen a Rush tribute band multiple times and I can see pretty well even if I'm far back. If the stage is raised then hopefully it won't be any trouble, but you might have a problem taking pictures unless you raise your arms and go on your tiptoes, trust me I do it all the time lol.

For the second set, people move forward to stand in the aisles and against the stage...or have at every show I've attended.

Although if you do have to pee, Rush concerts have no line for the ladies' room! :7up:

A couple of years ago, I was in the restroom line (the men's line is as long as an early Rush epic at one of their shows) during intermission and women were strolling out of their barely used restroom carefree and such.... then.... two of the women started loudly mocking the men and their line. I would have been angry (I really had to piss) if it wouldn't have been so funny.

Rush fans tend to be tall. I am 6'2" and get blocked views occasionally. But I am 11th row so you should be ok! As far as people talking over the music, it happens a lot at other rock concerts, less at Rush, but it's still maddening. Perhaps a bigger issue are cell phones. Everyone holds them up now to record parts of the show which makes it tough to see. Confusing how some pay mega dollars for good seats then waste

their time and attention on an amateur video. Folks the Blu Ray is 5% the cost of your floor seats and the quality much superior. Despite that, First ten rows at a Rush show are awesome!

Decibels never been an issue for me. If loud sounds tend to annoy, then bring a pair, but you will likely want to take them out to hear more Rush! Enjoy the show!

For one of the shows on the last tour we were in the 10h row.

I'm 5'8" and must have been around the tallest Rush fans in the world.

I had to keep moving about to see past a shoulder here, in between two people there.

I did not find the evening to be enjoyable to be completely honest.

I spent most of the show on my toes.

Won't risk that again.

I'm happy in the first lower section from the stage...perfect vantage point.

Anything past row 3-5 is a risky proposition for the vertically challenged.

Not at Rush shows they don't. You're reachin' dude. YOU do that. Rush shows are pretty controlled and regulated per band request.

Def bring ear plugs. The foam ones work fine, you just adjust them accordingly when you find a decent decibel mix for your preference. Tinnitus sucks. You don't wanna get that from your first show. Rush shows aren't bad like harder rock arena shows, but they can still be pretty loud. Depends on where they position the speakers in your venue.

10th row floor are good seats, but not necessarily for shorties. In your particular case, you have to hope you have shorties in front of you. Otherwise if it's too frustrating, you can ask venue staff if they can find you seats in the lower bowl loge (with tiered rows) where you might find an empty seat with unobstructed views. Going to shows when you're a shortie (like me), you generally never want floor seats unless you're in the first three rows, or if the band has a significantly elevated stage setup (usually not the case). :)

Don't drink much. Nothing's worse than getting wrecked so much you miss enjoying the essence of the magic of the symbiosis between caliber artists like Rush, still the best power trio on the planet! and the audience. :) Rush crowds are an entity unto themselves.

And DON'T try to seat crash up front. You didn't pay for those seats, it's not nice and generally security will either boot you back or you'll get ejected from the venue outright. Plus, it's bad concert karma.

First show Rush! You must be excited. :)

Bring earplugs and I would also recommend a pair of boots. My wife is an inch shorter than the OP and never can see anything from the floor. We went to a Depeche Mode show a couple of years ago and saw a woman with a huge pair of boots that must have boosted her height at least 4-5 inches. Not just the heels, it was like a pair of heavy duty combat boots. You'll probably wish you had a pair.
