Geddy's voice and the possibility of a new singer?

Let them be. They've given you already the best decades of their lives.

I wouldn't say "given," my last few Rush concert tickets have been rather expensive :D

As to the thread question, a new younger singer will never happen. I do agree that Ged's voice is getting worse, I can't imagine them even doing two more tours. And while I'm complaining, they should drop the intro/outro videos, they haven't been funny or entertaining in any way since Jerry Stiller was in them. Leave comedy to the professionals!

Thanks for pointing that out. I'll go back and edit what I wrote.

I have to say this too. I think it's very selfish to want them to go on at any price.

You have to face the reality. They aren't kids anymore. It takes a lot to drum away like Neil does, and he's losing it. They all are. Little by little. They are in their sixties. Neil has a little girl. Alex and Geddy have their children and grandchildren. To want these men to continue going on just so we can see them perform and hear our favorite songs is, in my opinion, selfish.

A bit harsh.. I don't feel it is selfish in any way.I think it goes without saying that the guys themselves would have to want to do it. I mean to say that it could be a possibility in the same way as it worked for Journey...a band also in their 60s. They wanted it to happen but this is only a hypothetical thread in any case. Ask yourself this if Geddy lost his voice entirely and the guys found a new singer would you go to the show? I know I would and that doesnt make me any less of a fan,

First of all, my post wasn't directed at you specifically. You aren't the only fan that will take them any way they can.

Secondly, don't put words in my mouth. I am the last one to rate your status as a fan around here. But, no worries, plenty others will.

Third, no. I wouldn't go see them if they got a new singer because they would no longer be Rush.

I didn't mean to put words in your mouth and I assumed you were referring to me as I started the thread but I see now you were just making a general comment. Apologies. As for it not being Rush any more well with the boys still playing their instruments to me it would still be Rush but obviously in a different incarnation, we will agree to differ on that point!

I am old school but on this point I would probably agree. As long as those 3 are on the stage playing I am good with it and would go. An additional "player/singer" or just singer wouldn't kill me at this point....

Bands like Stones can play when they're in their 70's. Or Eagles. They're not playing music that's so demanding.

I'm amazed how well Rush has been playing. Time Machine DVD is excellent, despite Geddy's voice. They must be in quite good shape for 60-year olds.

But I'd rather see them go out when they're still good.

I'm a HUGE Van Halen fan. Huge. They're almost as important to me as Rush... and watching footage from the 2012 tour with Roth was painful. I mean it was just shit. Roth looked and acted like Elmer Fudd having an Alzheimer's disease... and his singing went from awful to absolutely horrendous. I'd never want to see Rush embarrassing themselves and going out like this:

I saw them on that same exact tour and I thought they kicked ass. David Lee Roth ALWAYS sounded like shit, but I don't f***ing care, he's still one of the coolest people on earth. I have noticed that he WAS having problems with his voice that entire tour. When they performed in 2013, he sounded much better.

Just got a text from a buddy of mine in T.O.

Turns out that Alex offered the job to Jacob Moon.... and quickly recinded the offer as soon as Moon told him he had some wonderful idea for alternate arrangements of Natural Science and La Villa!

Jerry Stiller isn't funny.

And if Rush ever passed the lead singer baton to someone else, I wouldn't bother. Of course I ditched Marillion after Fish left, too.

Moot point anyway since the band have said themselves - several times - that if one retires then Rush is done.

I agree that it would never happen. These three guys have been through so much that I'm sure they wouldn't carry on without the others.

I agree completely with this. I love the fact they still feel like making music together, and continue to tour. And I went for nearly 20 years in between Rush shows, until I finally saw them on the second leg of the Clockwork Angels tour (my last Rush show before that was in 1994)- I won't be making that mistake again. I'll go see them for as long as they feel like doing it. But the reality is that it won't be much longer.

They've given us 40 years of music and touring- that's nearly my entire lifetime. Ever since I became a fan, at the age of six or seven- basically my entire lifetime, as a music lover, I've always been able to talk about Rush in the present tense. Have I been spoiled by that? Absolutely. Do I catch myself still thinking sometimes that they will just keep going on forever? Yes, sometimes. But the fact is that by the use of any logic you'd like to employ, they are near the end of their careers. And I recognize that we've been blessed to have them for this long. (For example, Neil could very easily have decided to never come back, after 1998).

But to get back on topic- replacing Geddy? Never. Never, ever.

If you want to hear Rush songs performed live with the kind of voice that he used to have, find a good Rush tribute band. I know they're out there.

I'm pretty sure Justin Bieber could hit the notes. He's Canadian too, therefore would be a good fit for the band.

If Justin's not available, Geddy can always resort to AutoTune. He can rely on technology to bring back those chipmunk screeches!

And yes, AutoTune can be used live, see video!

Replace Ged!Never!I remember they were thinking about getting a keyboard player about the time of HYF because of the amount of keyboard parts that were creeping into their music. They were afraid it would upset the ,ahem, chemistry between them.So Presto was more stripped back and the keys were tamed somewhat. What if Ged found he couldnt play bass as well as he could.Call in Les Claypool,Billy Sheehan or Jeff Berlin.I don't think so.Interestingly we tried a new guy to our little folk trio that has been running for a few years just this week.It didnt work out both musically and personality wise. The 'chemistry' was wrong.

My dad had an interesting idea that wouldn't exactly compromise the whole power trio chemistry but still might help lessen the strain on Geddy's voice. What if, during the more difficult vocal songs, we had an audience sing-along during which Geddy could rest his voice. We all know the words and melodies already anyway, especially for the more difficult older stuff. Sure most people can't really hit the notes, but in a giant crowd of people attempting to sing, who's gonna care if a number of people are out of tune? :)

Just a thought anyway, but I bet it'd be a lot of fun for Xanadu. :D

I love seeing the band live, but I also love hearing new music from them. Given the choice, at this stage, I think I'd choose to have new material over another tour. Unfortunately, the economics of recording an album aren't financially sustainable and the current economic model dictates that touring is the only way to stay revenue positive.

Back on point, one of the things I enjoy most about seeing them live, is the obvious genuine love that they have for each other. They really do seem like best friends. No thanks on a new vocalist.
