I would like to hear what you remember about the concert(s) and the songs they did, especially Xanadu and The Weapon. :)

i wasn't even a thought.

Your parents must have been younger than you are now!

That is true in my case. Parents were still in elementary school during AFTK I believe.

same here. they were both 10 during AFTK and about 15 during Signals. my dad saw Rush for the first time in 1987 and i still wasn't even a thought! :P

Ouch.

A good friend of mine saw the Signals tour and last year his daughter wore his tour shirt to school (she was one of my students). It was a faded 3 quarter sleeve. Listening to him talk all those years almost gave me memories of the show. He did say that they played Chemistry at the show he saw. Edited by micgtr71

Went to the New World Tour. Vividly remember Alex dancing during the Count Floyd Weapon intro....the need to bring that song back. They played a part of Xanadu as part of an encore medley.

Lucky lucky lucky Greg!

Yeah totally no doubt! I was 12 years old

I remember still being bummed that Alex had cut his hair. It took me a long time to forgive him.

The first time I saw Rush was at Massey Hall on the Friday night when they recorded ATWAS. I've seen every tour since then except for A Clockworks Angel tour. I've seen them at Massey Hall, The CNE, Ivor Wynne, Varsity, the ACC, the Amphitheater, MLG, Buffalo, Guelph, Ontario.

What I remember about the AFTK tour was the sheer majesty & power of Xanadu live. The dry ice swirling the stage during the song. How good CTTH was live. Cinderella Man & A Farewell to Kings live are incredible. The flashpots on A Farewell To Kings when Alex switches from classical to electric guitar. This album deserves to be re-visited & not the silly reggae version of CTTH they played on The Time Machine Tour. Cinderella Man should still be in Geddy's range.

What I remember about the Signals tour was The Weapon & getting the 3D glasses so we could see it in 3D & not in 1/2 D. Alex dancing around. That show was at the Gardens & taped. Hearing The Analog Kid live for the first time was amazing. Rush played 3 nights at the Gardens on that tour. I think they are the only band to get 3 nights there. . I was glad to see the brought The Analog Kid back on ACW tour.

Those Rush shows from '76 to '82 are some of my favourite concert memories. Rush had a certain power & majesty about them that is long lost IMHO. (you had to be there to compare)

You were lucky to be at the Massey Hall taping. That would have been cool. I agree about the power and majesty that's gone. I haven't really seen that since the Signals era and before. They're great now, but they were unbelievably awesome then.

.

Wow. I am genuinely envious of your good fortune and memories.

I love the way you put that: the "sheer majesty & power of Xanadu live." That is what it would be - majesty and power - and that is why I hope they do it this tour, and not the shortened version either.

Xanadu and The Weapon are my two favorite Rush songs.

I just caught this line. I agree. And it is evident when you watch the old concerts vs. the new ones. It's unfortunate, but that's the way it goes.

I forgot on my initial post that I saw them at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton on the opening night of the RTB tour.

IMHO, Rush lost a lot of their power live in the '80's after the Signals Tour-sorry New World Tour. As the keyboards took over more of their sound, they lost the guitar. What's more powerful, a guitar or a keyboard? (It's not even a real instrument) The keyboard songs started to dominate their live sets, the power was gone. Ever hear Mystic Rhythms live? Awful, no power, no majesty. They had to drop an older song to play Mystic Rhythms and so on and so on.

Eagle Moon is correct in her post above. They were still young then. It's just so different now then in the '70's. They have brought back some of their power as the guitar is more prominent-the majesty is missing. Getting older-we're all getting older. How can they bring back the majesty? Maybe they have to bring back some songs from the '70's besides Working Man & the usual 2112 OT/Temples. Ged can't hit the high notes any more? Is A Farewell To Kings too high? Is Xanadu too high? Is Cinderella Man too high?

I should stop before I go on a total rant & t/j this thread.

You know he could never sing many of those songs again. Well, he could sing them, but then everyone would wince and then wince some more. Even he knows that.

Look, we are all only young once. They aren't the first nor will they be the last to have had it and then lose it. It happens all the time. The only bad thing, as i see it and I'm not sure "bad" is a good word, is that when we do have it, we don't even realize it so that we can savor the moment for however long the "moment" lasts.

I don't blame the loss of power on age since it started when they were so young. I definitely agree about the keyboards. I saw them on the Signals tour and I agree that after that, things started to mellow out and not in a good way. The band became less guitar driven and softer in a sense. I kind of wonder if maybe once they got some popularity that they started to feel pressured to top their last album. So maybe that's where some of the experimentation and more keyboard use came into the equation.

EDIT: Just listened to AFTK, and definitely think that one's out of his range now. Unfortunately.

Let me tell you a short story about balls, that happened in 1983. New World Tour.

We (3 friends and me), arrived very early at the venue and some of the Rush roadies fooled around with a baseball, on the forecourt of the Rhein-Neckar Hall. Anyway, one guy threw the ball in my direction and I made an impressive good catch and returned it. He yelled at me to come over. So I did. He asked if I'm looking for an adventure and offered me a job. Heaven knows why my 16-year-old inner said no.

In retrospective that means, I had the lottery numbers in advance, but I didn't had the balls to play.
