It's a Rush lullaby. It's target group was insomniacs.

I would listen to the The Speed of Love ten times in a row before I'd listen to Rivendell once.

What can I say other than we have vastly different taste in music.

Except for The Weapon. That makes everything else ok...

At least Speed of Love has some real musicianship and an ok bridge and solo.

Rivendell is just some elf sitting on a log and finger-plucking.

That's true about The Weapon. It covers a multitude of sins. ;)

Is RIvendell even really a Rush song?

It's just Geddy playing right? Alex sat that one out didn't he? (And probably demanded it).

Well it does have Neil's (unfortunate) lyrics.

Alex plays the electric swells in the background

There is electric guitar in the background behind the acoustic playing the ambient volume swells. I would think that's probably Alex.

What's the matter? Your inner Keebler elf threatening to rear its little head?

You know, Savage, that is the Rush Revenge. Happened to me too with Snakes and Arrows. I had the songs going through my head 24/7 until I thought I would lose what little mind I have left. :scared:

This is an easy one!!

Rush has the magnificent Working Man but not much else.

FBN is full of very good songs including the magnificent By-Tor and the wonderful title track.

CoS has the very strong Lakeside Park and Bastile Day. Unfortunately it has the (for my tastes) horrible Fountain of Lamneth and Necromancer.

FBN wins my vote easily. Rush (because it does not have dogs like CoS does) comes in a very distant 2'nd.

Have to give some credit to CoS however. As mentioned, a couple of very strong songs and if their was no CoS then we would not have had 2112 (my favorite Rush album) and all the great albums that came after. So out of its ruins emerged something wonderful. But as an album - thanks but not for me, other than the few songs I mentioned.

Rush (the album) is just a nice hard rock album. Ultimately not really different than other bands and it was a mix of interesting music, unoriginal music, great playing, and mostly dull lyrics.

Fly by Night was vastly improved, but it still retained a lot of the first albums unoriginal song writing although it of course featured a lot of far improved writing. Honestly it shares this quality with Caress, and even to a far lesser degree 2112. Those three albums had them shifting into the great band they are, but each featured things they were best off leaving behind.

I put Caress over Fly because I love Fountain, Necromancer has some great playing, and Bastille Day is just a great song. Lakeside park is boring and Bald is an example of the old they were better off leaving behind, but Fly had more of the latter and less of the former, so I pick Caress.

Rush is fine, just not spectacular, excepting Working Man, Here Again, and Finding My Way, and maybe What You're Doing. Very enjoyable throughout, but not a lot worth loving a lot.

FBN has growing pains. By Tor is very well performed, but isn't that incredible of a composition compared to the standard at the time (it really would've benefitted from some kind of intro). Rivendell was a nice idea, but is just too long. Best I Can belongs on the debut, and Ged sounds like Gene Simmons on it. FBN itself should've had a meaner guitar tone, IMO, and In The End is executed so much better on ATWAS that the studio version almost sounds embarrassingly underwhelming to me. And Making Memories is nice, but obviously not a high point compositionally (I like the lyrics though). The only tracks here I don't have complaints with really are Anthem and BBB, the former an incendiary photo-metal start to the album a perfect intro to Neil's influence on the band, and the later just so right for Rush.

CoS obviously has growing pains and issues as well, not all of the tracks are as easy to enjoy as the previous two albums, but the ambition is what makes it my favorite. Bastille Day attempts to one up Anthem, and imo does so spectacularly, ITIGB actually comes off as humorous and is performed very well, Lakeside Park is a grower, but wistfully nostalgic in a good way. Then there are the epics. So many "issues" with both, but they're both so free flowing and fun to listen to that it doesn't really matter. Not to mention Alex slays both of these tracks any time he gets a solo. The Fountain Of Lamneth alone blows the entire FBN album away IMO, and most of the debut as well.

My vote goes to CoS.
