CoS. My third favourite Seventies Rush album, behind AFTK and Hems.

Seriously? This again?

It's hard to take into consideration the first album since it's nothing like the ones after it. Both FBN and COS I have good and bad things about them. I think most people probably like COS because of the longer epic songs. FBN has shorter more standard type songs. I think they're both great and both quite different from each other.

Again and again.... :) Agree with you by the way. The first album is just completely different. Very few folks cup of tea around here or so it seems.... Edited by Narpski

CoS is way more ambitious and creative, regardless of the epics. It has much better songwriting and playing than FBN period. FBN has a few too many generic sounding songs, although it does have that "iconic" (credit Narpski for that) album cover going for it.

Weakest song on CoS = I Think I'm Going Bald

I Think I'm Going Bald > Best I Can, Making Memories, and Rivendall

Surprised to see all the Caress of Steel love. I voted for Fly By Night. I have to because it's my third favorite album.

I cannot stand By-tor and will never grasp the love for it.

Just sayin' lol

You have heard it live off of ATWAS I am assuming?....

To me they weren't really Rush until Caress of Steel. The first 2 albums don't do much for me

Another one? Join the club... :)

Edit: Just to be clear. I am not a member of that club...

I agree, but a large part of the "ambitious and creative" is the epic songs. And by epic, I mean in the mythological sense.

Well...yeah..........but just the compositions themselves regardless of the lyrical content is far more ambitious and creative than most of Fly By Night, and this includes the shorter CoS songs.

Alex's guitar work is so much more varied and exotic on CoS.

I have a better appreciation for Caress of Steel than I used to, but to me it remains an awkward album. Necromancer is good in parts, but I can't get past the narration in the song. Take that out and the song would be a whole lot better. The screeching doesn't work on Caress of Steel. It's like he's doing it for the hell of it.

No One at the Bridge has perhaps his best and most purposeful "screeching".

The first minute or so isn't so great, but the instrumental jam stuff starting at 1:10 is freakin' awesome (especially live).

I usually tune out at the slower section (or just shut it off).

But 1:10 to 4:35 is excellent and is the first "real" Rush.
