I've heard of sour cream in mashed potatoes to make them creamier as well.

My mother does it and it really makes a difference...

I like Mashed Potatoes just fine, but that being said, Mashed Potatos are probably my least favorite preparation of Potatoes.

You know that really makes me think...I don't think I've ever had a type of potato preparation I didn't like. I love mashed, scalloped with ham, fried, baked, in soup or stew...

EDIT: Nevermind, I hate potato salad. Gross.

Oof. You're right. Potato salad is bad.

I love me some potato salad but am (surprise surprise) picky about it. No eggs, obviously. My favorite is made with new red potatoes, feta cheese. olives, and basil. Throw in some bacon crumbles if you're so moved. It has an olive oil/vinegar dressing and is really good warm. As far as the creamy ones go, I prefer the mustard style but only want enough of the dressing to coat the potatoes. Also please don't overdo it on the celery. Hands-down the worst I ever tasted was a potato and pear salad, of all things. To this day I am not sure if the person who made it wasn't secretly hoping to turn the gathering into a hurl-fest.

I love some potato salad but prefer it pretty dry (my mothers). My wife's family always makes it more gushy I call it. Too much mayo I suppose....

Mashed potatoes are okay, but not a big deal to me. But I don't like gravy.

As a vegetarian I eat stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet & mashed potatoes, and whatever veggies I make that year (this year it will be carrots from the garden). I make THE BEST pumpkin cheesecake, and even though I don't eat it I have been told I make the best turkey as well. This year we're also having homemade sourdough bread and homemade goat cheese.

I love cooking T-Day dinner :D

I like it on the dry side also,

No eggs or mayo. Miracle Whip for me. :D

And by extension mayonnaise. Some of the nastiest shit ever invented along with ranch dressing.

Why the hell would ANYONE put mayo in potato salad when there's Miracle Whip?

No wonder you guys don't like potato salad.

Apologies to all for my continued ignorance. My wife is going to town cooking as I post this and I have been informed that both sour cream and cream cheese are used in the mashed potatoes. I never have payed much attention but all I know is they are awesome and taste better and are creamier than others I have tasted.... :)

Thanksgiving. I'm not in danger of overeating on turkey (like it fine but honestly prefer chicken), stuffing (yuck), sweet potatoes (blech), or pumpkin pie (keep it the hell away from me).

But mashed potatoes? I could eat Chris Christie's old weight in fluffy creamy buttery spuds. I won't, because then I'd be big as a house and no one else would get any, but I could.

My plate will probably feature a couple of hunks of turkey (dark meat), a dab of cranberry sauce (real, not canned), some garlic green beans, maybe a roll, and a huge heaping mound of mashed potatoes.

Pumpkin cheesecake >>>>> pumpkin pie.

As for the original question, I love all three basic elements of Thanksgiving dinner...turkey (white meat only), stuffing, and mashed potatoes and gravy. Thanksgiving dinner is the best meal of the year, IMO.

You could make anything into a cheesecake and it'd probably be at least passably good. To be clear, I like just about every pumpkin dessert EXCEPT the pie. It's the consistency and mouthfeel.

One of my favorite mashed potato recipes involves the addition of cream cheese, especially good if you're not using a "good" mashing potato (Yukon Golds are best). It makes the potatoes taste even richer. It's a good thing mashed potatoes involve a little bit of work otherwise I'd be eating them all the time.

Adding cream cheese is the only way to make amazing mashed potatoes. Lots of salt, lots of butter, tons of cream cheese and a decent amount of heavy whipping cream. Do not be on a diet when eating my mashed taters. They are so thick and rich and buttery.

As for my favorite Thanksgiving Day dinner plate: turkey (white and dark meat - I will fight anyone for a plump and juicy drumstick), cranberry sauce, taters, sausage and apple dressing with fresh homemade bread cubes, and Brussels sprouts. And wine. Lots of white wine. The more family members over, the more wine.

I love potatoes but hate that mayo slop. It's gross. The only potato "salad" I like is a warm, roasted potato salad with bacon, onions in a coarse ground/Dijon mustard sauce. Cold potatoes swimming in mayo is just nasty.

Mashed potatoes are great as leftovers too. I'll be making some potato pancakes with this recent batch.

That's a good plan. Potato pancakes are awesome.

Do you like them served with sour cream or applesauce or both? I go for both.

This sounds really good. I've never had it like that. It's always been the slop kind.

Either works, but applesauce is excellent!

People are forced to create other potato salad recipes after one bite of the mayo slop kind.

My kids loathe sour cream so they get applesauce. I can't believe my own kids hate sour cream. Ain't right.
