Deciding to be child-free

I think there should be a registration of some kind to have children. People should have to pass an IQ test and then be able to prove that they can support the children that they're bringing into the world.

The unfortunate part of that is then there goes freedom and liberty or move to China I guess..... :)

If you move to China then you'd only be limited to one child.

Unless the first kid's a girl - then I think you're allowed to try again for a boy.

You're partially right...

Under the new policy, the most significant overhaul of China’s family planning rules in 30 years, married couples in which just one parent is an only child can also have a second baby. The previous rules allowed two children for couples in which both parents are only children. The old policy also made exceptions for China’s officially recognized ethnic minorities and rural couples whose first child was a girl or disabled.

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/26/world/asia/many-couples-in-china-will-pass-on-a-new-chance-for-a-second-child.html?_r=0

The upshot? For every 100 girls born in China, there are 120 male births.

Is it true that the mothers will abort a child or abandon them if they're female? I remember reading that at some point but I can't remember if it was China. Maybe something they did at one time?

It definitely happens in China, though it happens elsewhere as well.

There's no reason the boy to girl ratio should be 120 to 100, or change significantly over time if this was not the case.

Well, there is a reason you rarely (never?) hear about people adopting healthy baby BOYS from Chinese orphanages.

India has really worked hard to halt the long-held cultural bias favoring boys. Abandonment of infant girls was long a problem in the poorer and more rural areas. The campaign featured the slogan, "A daughter is just as valuable as a son".

With that female to male ratio they'll face some competition ;)

Have you chosen to not have children? (This goes for men as well as women, since it takes two to tango.) If so, how old were you when you made that choice? Was it difficult?

I've known ever since I was a child that I never wanted kids. I just never had the biological or emotional drive to do so. I've heard friends talking about how much they wanted kids and I find it interesting just how foreign that concept is to me, like telling a fish you want to learn about driving a car.

Are there others here who feel the same way?

It takes a very intelligent and stable person to make the decision that you made. There is only one problem - we need people of your intelligence in the gene pool!

If you haven't seen it, check out the move "Idiocracy." The basis of the movie is that a guy is forgotten about during an Army hibernation experiment. When he wakes up, he is 500 years in the future and finds that the gene pool is basically void of intelligence. It is a rather silly movie, but the first few minutes is priceless.

There's no such thing as complete freedom and liberty. We're all under someones thumb, either a government or an employer...etc.

NO!

You're free inside your own mind, they can't get in there...yet...(but they want to)

You mean YOU only think YOU'RE free you have no idea what goes on in anybody else's head. You don't even know if anybody else is really alive, they could be a robots, and you have no way to really prove it, not in the way that you "know" that you're alive...or think you are...damn robot...

You only THINK you're free.

I think.

I think I am.

Therefore, I am! I think....

Of course you are my bright little star!

I've miles and miles of files

Pretty files of your forefather's fruit

And now to suit

Our Great computer

You're magnetic ink.

I'm more than that

I know I am.

At least, I think I must be.

There you go, man!

Keep as cool as you can.

Face piles of trials with smiles

It riles them to believe

That you perceive

The web they weave

And keep on thinking free.
