Marathon. I think my favourite era for this band started with 2112 and, rather than ending in MP, progrssed all the way to PoW. Signals, GuP and PoW are all hitting close to perfect on my radar!

Right now...Mystic Rhythms.

This album is just amazing. I cannot fault an album I used to find INTOLERABLE!

The Big Money is swamping me with awesomeness right now. I think I like it more than Subdivisions, a song I have always found comparable!

Its edging close to 10/10. A Farewell To Kings through to Power Windows are all emerging as solid favourites in my collection! I'm glad I'm a new fan: its all old to me, so I have no specific preference for any one "era" in relation to my growing up.

I gotta say, I dig your enthusiasm and I mean that sincerely. Oh to be young again..... :)

Rush are emerging as one of my favourite ever bands. I just can't get enough of them! And NO ONE I KNOW LIKES THEM!

I went to my local record store lately, one of the last independent stores in the country, and they sell a lot of obscure rubbish and I mean REALLY OBSCURE. In the middle the countryside a good hours drive from the nearest city, one can walk into a tiny shop and buy Ayreon's latest album in any format. You may find some odd, badly reviewed black metal, random jazz artists, pop rubbish and a lot of peculiar new vinyls. So I ask if they had the latest Rush releases. The response?

"We never really do well with Rush." And then he proceeds to advertise to me various different (and stunning, might I add) formats for the new Ayreon. Which is about as commercial as my chest hair. Go figure.

(Saying that, I did by the Ayreon album, the 2cd-1dvd edition. I have yet to find out how many copies they have sold.)

So I got this album maybe a month or so ago now, but neglected to post about it here until now. I was hesitant to get it at first after having just checked out GuP from the library, and still needing to digest it some more, but the offer was too good to refuse (vinyl, 5 bucks, and I actually had money). As soon as listened to it, I didn't get what any supposed general dislike of the album was all about that my dad had mentioned. I immediately saw it as better than GuP (and still do) as GuP was taking too long to get into (a number of great tracks, but a general sameness which happened to be a bit slow and dark to take to much of, PoW having a similar balance of guitar vs. Synth, but faster and less hopeless). That being said, I do quite like GuP, but PoW hit it out of the park for me (of course, it is my first Rush album on vinyl).

Anyway, as for picking the best track on PoW (oh yeah, that's why I'm writing this). It's such a hard decision, because so many of the tracks are right up there (Territories, Marathon, Big Money, Manhattan Project, Middletown Dreams...most all of them really). If I had to pick one though, it's got to be Marathon. Talk about inspiring, and dat bassline. Marathon certainly deserves the title, but there are many close seconds.

Middletown Dreams is my all-time favorite song; that applies to Rush and music in general. There are many, many Rush songs I relate to, but this song is literally word for word.

The office door closed early, the hidden bottle came out. The salesman turned to close the blinds, a little slow now, a little stout. But he's still heading down those tracks, any day now for sure. Another day as drab as today, is more than a man can endure.

My father passed away January, 06, 2012 from liver cancer at age 50. Everyone that knew him was aware he had a drinking problem, but we (my Mom and I) were completely unaware as to what extent. It reached the point where he was driving to work, but only to sit in the office all day drinking.

Dreams flow across the heartland, feeding on the fires. Dreams transport desires, drive you when you're down. Dreams transport the ones who need to get out of town.

I’ve wasted many years of my life hiding away from the world. If you were to take these lyrics to a more profound context, you could interpret ‘dreams transport the ones who need to get out of town’ as your dreams and ambitions are what keep you holding on, and will direct you where you need to be. The ‘town’ could represent a state of mind, or your current 'place' in life.

The boy walks with his best friend, through the fields of early May. They walk awhile in silence, one close, one far away. But he'd be climbing on that bus, just him and his guitar, to blaze across the heavens like a brilliant shooting star.

Jamming out with my guitars is one of the few things I enjoy in life. I’ve been practicing guitar for eighteen years now, or since I was four years old. Though I don’t believe I’m any good, I’ve always dreamt of participating in a band. More than likely that would never happen, because I regard that as more of a fantasy than a dream. Besides, I'm way too shy for that. Due to my current situation, I may need to sell virtually everything I own. My guitars are the only material items I refuse to give up, no matter what happens. So someday I might be climbing on that bus, just me and my guitar. Hopefully that’s not the case. As far as going anywhere, yeah right, lol. I don’t want to be alone forever, and I’m assuming someday I’ll meet someone I can call my best friend. Whoever that person is, they are out there somewhere now. So in a way, we’re close, but far away, and we are walking this ‘field’ together. Next month is May... so where are they?! Lol.

The middle-aged Madonna, calls her neighbor on the phone. Day by day the seasons pass and leave her life alone. But she'll go walking out that door, on some bright afternoon, to go and paint big cities, from a lonely attic room.

My Mom is middle-aged, and named Donna. When she’s not working she tends to spend her time alone, but does speak to the neighbors occasionally. The term ‘paint the town’ means to go out and have a good time. I interpret ‘to go and paint big cities’ in a similar manner. For a while she was going through a phase where she would leave late afternoon to go to bars, and return the early hours of the morning. It was very strange she ever did that, because she was always a fairly strict person. Eventually she left my Dad for this new lifestyle. So she was ‘painting big cities’ I guess, not just the ‘town’. Sorry if I’m repeating myself at all; I’ve discussed similar things in other posts.

It's understood by every single person who'd be elsewhere if they could. So far so good, and life's not unpleasant in their little neighborhood.

I wish I were elsewhere right now, for sure. In 1989, my parents built a house together, which has been foreclosed on. We’re down to seven weeks now until we need to leave. When I hear ‘so far so good, and life’s not unpleasant in their little neighborhood’, the first thing that comes to mind is all of our memories here. Though they may be gone, they will forever exist in the past. ‘So far so good...’ This home was the first to be built in this entire neighborhood, so I sort of consider it ‘our’ neighborhood.

They dream in Middletown.

‘They dream in Middletown’ could represent all of the people who are caught between achieving their dreams and struggling to survive, which is exactly where I’m at now.

I apologize for such a long post, geesh! This went slightly further than I intended it to, sorry for that.

That's quite an essay you posted, there. ;) Which I can appreciate, because I can also be very long-winded at times. Anyway, it's uncanny how all of the things in that song fit you so well- both the hope and the sorrow.

Middletown Dreams is also near the top of the heap for me, on that album. It's between that and Marathon (though Territories is also a contender). I listened to Power Windows all the way through for the first time in a little while, earlier this week. It's a much stronger album than I've credited it, for a long time. I used to largely avoid it, but it's very, very good.

Some great posts here! I dug up an old cassette of Power Windows a month back and played it in my old Forerunner. The deck plays fast, and that's always been my favorite way to listen to the album...driving, music cranked, with each song played with urgency.

Marathon is possibly my favourite Rush song ever.

Kind of obvious which one I voted for!

I'd have to say Marathon. That song makes me happy for some reason.

The reason why is,

For me at least. When life gets "rough and tough" you have to pull yourself up by the boot straps. The tune helps me all the time. :D :rush:

This is a great album. Really hard to choose between really Manhattan project, mystic rhythms and marathon but I'm going to have to go for Manhatten project. It's a brilliant song. '...The pilot of Enola Gay, flying out of the shockwave...' has to be one of my favourite parts of any Rush song.

Don't remember if I commented on this thread way back or not but I picked Grand Designs. It was a tough choice but that one just edged out the others for me. I love the keyboard intro and probably the fact that I'm an artist and a musician is what draws me to the lyrics.
