Skunked Beer

Couple things I will get out of the way....

 

1. I am not a beer snob. I love domestic light beers, and I love microbrews, dark thick beers.....I pretty much like all beer.

2. I dont know much about beer.

 

Here is my question - I have always heard people talk about skunked beers, like if its cold, then goes back to room temp, and then gets cold it wont taste as good, or will give you a hangover.

 

I ask this question, as over the last weekend, I was playing golf in the backyard with some buddies, emptied out a bunch of beers into a plastic tub filled with ice. There are probably a dozen beers in that tub, in which the ice has obviously melted at this point. They have been sitting in the tub in the backyard in the shade.

 

Will these beers be okay to drink if I chill them back down?

 

(they are miller lite, people with cultured palates please refrain from making comments dissing domestic lite beers)

Dark bottles? You may be ok.

 

Think about who you are talking to......cans brotha

 

How silly of me to assume you would buy bottled beer.

 

Still probably ok. The issue is with sunlight actually getting to the beer. Hence, clear glass bottles are not desirable.

I find that all beer in green bottles tastes skunky. Not that it's gone bad; that's just the way it tastes :boo hiss:

 

If they're cans that have been warm for a day or two I don't know that would make a difference.

It shouldn't even be a problem with clear glass bottled beer, either. Those beers are heavily filtered (as most mass produced beers are.) Honestly, I think the Skunky Beer is a problem of yesteryear,

Heineken is always skunky despite the green bottle, but we're talking the export version that we North Americans drink. People who live across the pond get to drink the local version, and they say it's quite good.

 

Moosehead is another green bottle beer that was always skunky to me.

What's a Skunked Beer..? :)

 

Beer that tastes/smells a little like skunk :(

 

As in a furry stripy animal, or this emote :smoke: ?

 

Both! I was thinking of the animal, but the emote guy probably smells a little like the animal.

 

Years ago I had a friend who smoked, and like the smell of skunks (animal) because it reminded her of smoking.

I have for most of my life drank beer that has been cold and then returned to room temperature back and forth many times over. I have had beer stored in my basement for more than a year (left over from sisters wedding) that was brought up and chilled and consumed.

So as far as safety and taste, I can see no reason why your beer will not be as good as it was the day you bought it.

 

I also like all beers from light to almost gravy heavy. I prefer light beers and i prefer the cheap stuff the best. In fact I am going to a bar later this afternoon that has Busch for 75 cents a can. This is what I will drink.

Its good and cheap. Two things I can really appreciate.

I can't drink something that feels like it's been in the Antarctic - sets my teeth on edge (sensitivity), so I have to wait til it hits room temperature.

I usually use the beer that has warmed back up after being chilled for cooking brats or beer battering fish. :)
