Wine!

Recommended Posts

I am SURE there is a thread for this somewhere but I'm too lazy to dig it up.

Why are we not talking about wine more!? On a Rush thread?

I'm getting back into wines and am looking for good recommendations. What is everybody's favorite? What are you guys obsessing over lately? For me it's Guigal Rhone, I cannot get enough.

Love wine

I like cabernet sauvignon (sp?), merlot, and I am a big fan of pinor noirs

I refuse to ever pay more than 10 bucks for a bottle

Lately I have been buying this bottle with a giant rooster on it, its been on sale for like 5 bucks

A really solid bottle i will buy is smoking loon cabernet savignon, its like 7 bucks. Even people that have way more cultured palates than me think its really good.

One that I have noticed is popular aroudn here is the Cupcake vineyards red velvet.......really smooth and not as sweet as you would think. When its hot as heck out I like to throw some icecubes in it.

Sometimes I buy the menage a trois wine just because of the name

http://www.menageatroiswines.com/wines/pinot-noir

Dont make fun of me people that actually know stuff about wine

I also enjoy my uncle Billy Ray Thomas's (yes he has 3 first names, and hes from oklahoma) blackberry wine, which has an insanely high alcohol content

Honorable Mentions - Ripple, Night Train, MD 20-20 (the blue raspberry)

Mmm, wine. Over the last ten or so years I've developed a particular appreciation for wine. And for better or worse my tastes have become somewhat expensive!

It just so happens that right now I am taking a class called Food, Wine, & Culture in California and I am currently in the middle of writing a paper on food & wine pairings. Well, I would be writing it if I weren't here wasting time! :P

How do you pick your wine? I just look at the label and see if I like how it looks

One of the books I just read, Wine Wise, talks about how certain grapes grown in certain areas have certain general tastes and flavour profiles. (The same grapes may also be grown in other areas because it's cheaper, but the flavour will be different and probably not as good.) That's a good first step, and liking the label is another way!

Some of my favourite Cabs cost about $40-60 per bottle. The difference between that and a $10 bottle is like night and day. If you have the chance, go do some wine tasting where you can try the more expensive wines and see what you think.

I won't lie, I've had all of the ones you mention (with the exception of Uncle Billy's) and I'm not a fan. I used to buy the inexpensive, more mass produced wine but as I've gotten older and more serious about it I save up my pennies for pricier bottles, I also look for sales. Cupcake I have tried but I generally like to stay away from wines and wineries that advertise with a commercial or a billboard, it is a pet peeve of mine. We have a BevMo! in town and I don't normally go there but when they have their sales I can get up to 40% off wines by my favorite producer, Guigal. I went and stocked up this past weekend. I don't have anything against cheaper bottles, I don't always adore the ones that try to appeal to the masses I suppose. And I'm a sucker for anything French, especially Rhones.

Buutttttt one of my all-time favorites is one called Gypsy Chariot and is $4.99 a bottle. It is a California red blend and every year Trader Joe's will release it. I love, love, love blends.

At the moment I am going through a white burgundy phase with dinners I make at home.

Great idea. The closest I have come was looking for a wine with a certain grape, but found there could be a lot of difference within the same sort of grape.

There are certain things in life that I would rather not develop an expensive taste for. If I were to drink wine at all or regularly I would rather only know what a 10.00 bottle tastes like...... :codger:

Exactly, it's like owning a Corolla but test driving a BMW, you're going to want that BMW.

I honestly dont doubt it. I think people can be silly when they say "you cant taste the difference between a 50 dollar bottle and a 5 dollar bottle."

I had a buddy in college that was a bit of a wine snob, he bought a case of this (it was EXCELLENT)

I guess for me there is a bit of a struggle, I really do enjoy the heck out of a 8-10 dollar bottle. I am sure that if I tried a bunch of expensive wine, I would taste the difference, and probably want to start buying more expensive wine. It might ruin me enjoying my cheaper wine!

I choose mine based off of interest. Does it look interesting to me based off of the producer's notes on the back? Have I had bottles by the same producer that I've enjoyed? is it from a region that I like? Or depending on the notes of flavor that have been added. Also, I go by what my friends and acquaintances are drinking and sometimes ask them for recommendations. I'm also a member of a few groups on Facebook where people will discuss the wines that they've tried and what they liked, loved, or hated about them.

If there is a place where you can go wine tasting you'll quickly learn about what you like and don't like. I highly recommend it. I for one, cannot stand dessert wines, ports, I just... no, I do not enjoy them at all. I learned that from going tasting, doing something like that saves a lot of money in the long run. I think it's worth it to pay anywhere from $8-$30.00 per person to educate yourself in that manner. When I go out to dinner I use it as an excuse to try new wines, I try to never buy a glass of wine that I've already had, that way I pay $7.00-$20.00 and if I enjoy it then I invest in a bottle at home.

From personal experience, even bumping it up to $12.00-$15.00 a bottle is worth it. And like I said in the previous post, sometimes you can catch sales. I know some grocery stores have a special all of the time where you buy 6 bottles, stick them in a special little box, and bam, there's an additional 10% off.

Yes... maybe it's the wine snob in me but you can DEFINITELY taste the difference.

When I look for a wine I look at the alcohol content... when im drinking a white I like a 12.5% - 13.5% and the vintage... the older the better and the area of the vineyard.

I usually spend anywhere between $12-32 when it comes to a good dinner wine.

Mind you, I don't always drink the expensive ones! Those are for special dinners & special occasions.

Beer > Wine

If I had to choose one or the other for the rest of my life, I would go beer

However, wine is awesome and sometimes I prefer it to beer
